Camped out in the outside post for the break, Dayatthespa rushed up to press Frolic= s Revenge (Vindication) through an opening quarter in :24.00. With the front-runner squarely in her sights through a half in :48.60, the chestnut began to cut into her rival=s narrow advantage and reached even terms with her as they rounded the home turn. Ready to be cut loose in the stretch, Dayatthespa had to pull out extra in the final sixteenth, but she had enough left to hold off Regalo Mia at the wire. Cont. p5 RULING THE LAS FLORES Izzy Rules (Peace Rules) once again lived up to her name with a authoritative front-running score in Sunday=s GIII Las Flores S. at Santa Anita. Installed the 6-5 choice for her first attempt at graded company, the bay quickly bounded to front, reeling off an opening quarter in a crisp :21.73. In front by two lengths through a half mile in :43.31, the 5-year-old was given a couple of cracks of the whip by jockey Edwin Maldonado turning for home, but the mare quickly proved that was unnecessary as she powered home an easy 4 1/4-length winner over the game yet vain challenge of Spectacular Sky (Sky Mesa). AThis win feels great, and it=s a dream come true,@ said Maldonado, who was earning his first stakes win at the Arcadia oval. AI was hoping to win a stakes race here at Santa Anita, and I finally did. This filly is so nice going and is just easy to ride. My main concern during the race was to try and get to the quarter pole alone, because I knew she would do the rest of the work for me.@ Cont. p3 AND HOWE Team Valor International=s Howe Great (Hat Trick {Jpn}) certainly had the credentials to be backed down to 3-5 favoritism for his graded stakes debut in Sunday=s GIII Palm Beach S. at Gulfstream. That support appeared to be fully justifed as the dark bay--appropriately named after hockey icon Gordie Howe--strode home a length clear of the highly- regarded Dullahan (Even the Score), who was making his seasonal debut. Content to let Scorcher (Kitten=s Joy) show the way through an opening quarter in :23.87, the handsome sophomore settled along the rail as GI Breeders= Futurity winner Dullahan settled in an easy fifth down the backstretch. Following a half in :47.52 and three quarters in 1:11.53, Howe Great inched to the front along the inside as Dullahan swept to reach the leading pack from the four path. As the leg-weary pacesetter wilted, Howe Great spurted to a slight advantage at the head of the lane as Csaba (Kitten=s Joy) and Dullahan mounted their challenges. But despite Dullahan=s best effort, Howe Great was able to hold his rival at bay by a length at the wire. Musical Romance Likely For Inside Information... Pinnacle Racing and Bill Kaplan=s Musical Romance(Concorde=s Tune), the Eclipse Award-winning sprintmare of 2011, hopes to improve off a fourth-placeeffort in the Jan. 28 Sunshine Millions Filly & MareSprint when she heads postward Saturday for the GII Inside Information S. at Gulfstream. Victorious inlast fall=s GI Breeders= Cup Filly & Mare Sprint atChurchill, the Florida-bred=s 2012 debut was marred byan awkward start, a rough run to the turn, and a shoemalfunction. ARight now she=s probable for the race,@said Kaplan, who also trains the filly. AShe grabbedherself pretty good coming out of the gate. A horseoutside of her acted up just as the gate opened. Shealso bent a shoe and took a piece of a quarter off. There was actually a small puncture wound [in herfoot], but she>s fine now and ready to go.@ Alsopossible for the Inside Information is Grade II winnerPomeroys Pistol (Pomeroy), who came home fifth in theSunshine Millions. AI=m still feeling a little guilty aboutrunning her in that race,@ said the 4-year-old=s owner/breeder/trainer Amy Tarrant. AI think I made a mistakerunning her back too quickly after her last race. I=mprobably not going to decide until entry day [Wednes-day].@ According to Tarrant, another option for the fillyis Keeneland=s GI Vinery Madison S. Apr. 12.

The unbeaten Gemologist (Tiznow), off since a win inthe GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. Nov. 26, has alsobeen entered in the salty five-horse affair at a mile. AI don=t want to throw him to the wolves the firsttime [off a layoff],@ Pompay revealed. AI just want to get a good starting raceinto him.@ Is Currency Swap running out of timeto get on the Triple Crown trail? AObviously, we=d love to do theDerby or the Preakness, but it=s goingto be like they tell me, >Push >em ordon=t push >em,=@ Pompay explained.AThey want a nice 3-year-old, but theydon=t want me to push him too hard inthe beginning when we=re not ready.@ Based on his sharp move Saturday, itsure looks like he=s sitting on go.

He Could’ve Been Yours... Plucked out of the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky JulyYearling sale for $70,000 by astute pinhooker Nick deMeric, Currency Swap failed to find a new home whenthe bidding stopped at $92,000 at last year=s OBSMARsale.

AHonestly, we always loved the horse,@ said de Meric, who made the trip from his Florida base to root onCurrency Swap in the main event for 2-year-olds atSaratoga last summer. AOne of his most endearingqualities is that he has a wonderful disposition--he=svery laid back, but also very confident and aggressive,

but not overly aggressive. Aggressivein a good way, and very forward andeasy to get along with.@ Currency Swap, bred in theSunshine State by Stonecliff Farm, also had the looks to go along withhis good demeanor, according to thenative of England. AHe=s a lovely physical,@ de Mericcontinued. AHe=s a big, rugged, robust-looking horse--a lot of bone, niceshort cannonbones, a good stronghindquarter and a lovely shoulder. Iwas just looking back through mynotes on him and my updates to theowner, and they were all positive. Of

course, [2011 freshman sire] High Cotton was awildcard to some degree.@ Was de Meric surprised that Currency Swap didn=tprove a bit more popular in the ring after breezing aquarter in :21 3/5 (video) at last year=s breeze show?

AGood question--yes and no,@ he replied. AYesbecause I always loved him so much and recommendedhim to quite a few people. And no because he didn=tactually love the synthetic surface over here [at OBS].His breeze, while it was solid, wasn=t quite what I felthe was capable of from what he had been doing on dirtat home.@ De Meric added, A[Trainer] George Weaver tried tobuy him privately after the sale, but at that point, wehad already decided that everyone had their chance andthat we were going to put him in the racing stablebecause we really liked him.@ Bidders who took a pass on Currency Swap at lastyear=s sale will have another chance to buy into thefamily when his full-sister goes under the hammerduring Wednesday=s session. The bay filly, also bred inFlorida by Stonecliff, has been consigned by de MericSales as hip 304. She stopped the timer in :10 3/5 atthe breeze show (video). AWe like her a lot,@ de Meric commented. AShe=s verylike her brother in many ways. She may be a little bitless husky than he was, but they have a lot of similarphysical characteristics.@

Thomas Looks to Build Off Big 2011... Sequel Bloodstock=s Becky Thomas has long beenone of the business=s most respected yearling-to-juvenile pinhookers. And members of her 2011 draft areshowing why. Thomas, whoin the past has sold Grade Iwinners like Officer(Bertrando), Rightly So (Readthe Footnotes) and Habibti(Tabasco Cat) has enjoyed anespecially strong run of late, led by Grade I winnerCreative Cause (Giant=sCauseway). The grayreaffirmed his status asCalifornia=s top Derby hopeSaturday with an impressivescore over Bodemeister(Empire Maker) in the GII SanFelipse S. at Santa Anita. Itwas the third graded win for the J “TDN RisingStar” J, who also captured the GI Norfolk S. and GII Best Pal S. last year and ran a close-up third toHansen (Tapit) and Union Rags (Dixie Union) in the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile. Thomas purchased CreativeCause for $135,0000 as a KEESEP yearling and, afterscratching him from the Fasig-Tipton Florida Sale with aminor suspensory issue, sold him privately to trainerMike Harrington and owner Heinz Steinmann lastspring. Creative Cause wasn=t Thomas=s only former pupil toperform well Saturday. At Gulfstream, another J “TDN Rising Star” J, Ever So Lucky (Indian Charlie)ran third in the GIII Swale S. It was his first start sincefinishing second to Gemologist (Tiznow) in the GIIKentucky Jockey Club S. in November. A $95,000KEESEP yearling, Ever So Lucky was Thomas=s top-priced juvenile in 2011, topping Fasig-Tipton=s May salewith a $600,000 bid. EQB bought the horse, nowtrained by Jonathan Sheppard, for George Strawbridge. At the same May sale, Thomas also offered a leggycolt named Speightscity (Speightstown). A $65,000

KEESEP yearling, hewas bought back for$49,000, but was soldsoon after privately toclients of trainer GaryContessa. Threemonths later, he brokehis maiden at Saratogaby an 11 1/2-lengthmargin, was unplacedin the GI Breeders= CupJuvenile, and hasrecently rounded backinto form with a solid

OBS Preview cont.

Sequel=s 2011 OBS March consignment produced the$75,000 grad Pretension (Bluegrass Cat), winner of theSweet Envoy S. for New York-breds at Aqueduct Feb. 11, and more recently fifth to Hansen (Tapit) inthe GIII Gotham S. Mar. 3. Thomas=s $125,000 OBSAPR grad Closerwalk (Street

Sense) recently brokethrough in his third careerstart with a victory in aseven-furlong maidenspecial at Gulfstream Mar.3, just as Teeth of the Dog(Bluegrass Cat), anotherwho sold privately, brokethrough in his third careertry going nine panels in asalty Gulfstream specialweight Feb. 4.

On the same day as Closerwalk=s win nine days ago,the filly Undeterred (More Than Ready), a $105,000FTFFEB grad, became another horse of note fromThomas=s 2011 group, winning a six-furlong maiden inJapan by six lengths. That puts the official record forThomas=s 2011 horses at one Grade I winner, anotherstakes winner, a pair of graded horses and at leastthree smart-looking maiden special weight winners.

AWe don=t sell that many horses, so it=s been a greatrun,@ Thomas said from the OBS sales grounds, whereshe=s been preparing what she hopes will be her nextround of stars. She has reason to be optimistic, in part because, as ayearling shopper last year, she made a concerted effortto avoid horses that mightbecome Aweak links@ in heroperation. As part of her refinedbuying strategy, she targetedonly better-quality yearlings, onthe page and by conformation.Thomas knew she=d have to paymore for them, but reasonedshe=d be a happier horsewoman. And, hopefully, a moresuccessful seller. AWhen I walked down theshedrow and saw a marginalhorse, I just had a hard timeliking them at all,@ she admitted.AI hated myself for buying them,I didn=t like them, and they werenot the horses that showed upfor me. I couldn=t promote them at the sale, becausethey were just horses, and I bet I lost money on thosehorses every time.@

Thomas continued, ASo I went out and just got thehorses I really, really liked, and spent more on them. Idon=t know that it will turn into a better profit year forus, but I do have some really nice horses. I was reallyhappy with my Barretts horses, I=m really happy withmy horses here, and I have a nice group for PalmMeadows.@ The early returns have been positive. At last week=sBarretts March Sale, Thomas was the second-leadingconsignor by gross, with four sold for $635,000. Theyincluded a Bernstein--Clouds of Gold colt who sold toNorth Hills for $200,000, a Pure Prize--Gatherindy fillywho went to West Point Thoroughbreds for $195,000,and a Malibu Moon--Ever Hopeful filly who sold toKristin Mullhall for $160,000. The Pure Prize filly didn=tsell as a yearling, while the Bernstein and Malibu Moonbrought $70,000 and $125,000 as yearlings, respectively. Thomas admits that paying over six figures for apinhooking prospect can be a little unnerving, particularly for the type of horse she says she shopsfor. AThe worrisome thing for me is that a lot of my betterhorses are two-turn horses,@ she said. AThey=re notlittle, short sprinter horses. Those horses don=t work asfast, and I have lot of money in them. What everybodywants to see is a big two-turn horse work in :10 1/5,and that sometimes doesn=t happen.@ As a general rule, Thomas agrees that buyers havegotten more sophisticated over the past decade, relyingless on the time of an under-tack breeze and more onhow the style in which the horse works. AI think they=remore forgiving and able to assess times that aren=t asfast,@ said Thomas. AIt=s not all about speed.@ She added, AIt also helps if you=ve been around a longtime like I have. I really don=t promote anything I don=tlike, and I think that makes a difference.@ (Evidence of the truth in that? Mike Harringtonpurchased Creative Cause, site unseen, based onThomas=s recommendation. The trainer later told theDRF=s Gleyne Cain Oakford that it was until after theBest Pal that Harrington admitted it.) Thomas has 12 catalogued atOBS March. Standouts includehip 168, a filly by Medaglia d=Oro--Tango Prospect (Allen=s Prospect)who sells tomorrow. From thefamily of GI King=s Bishop S.winner Visionaire (Grand Slam),the filly, a $120,000 KEESEPyearling, worked in :10 3/5 at theunder-tack show. AShe=s very much a two-turnfilly,@ said Thomas. AShe=s alwaysbeen a really hard-training horse--she really wants to go out andtrain.

AShe=s a real pretty mover, and while she didn=t worksuper fast, there=s something about this filly. She is alsoan Ontario-bred.@ Also in Thomas=s shedrow is hip 297, a New York-bred filly from the first crop of GISW Majestic Warrior(A.P. Indy) out of Dixie Lyrics (Dixie Union). Sheworked an eighth in :10 2/5 and was purchased lastyear for $75,000 as an FTNAUG yearling. AI boughtthree Majestic Warriors in total--I have a colt in this salethat I also like a lot [hip 37]--and she=s just a really nicefilly,@ said Thomas. AShe=s always been a very elegantfilly.@

Hip 318 is a Thomas homebred andanother potential notable after a :102/5 breeze. A New York-bred by Readthe Footnotes out of Fit Right In (Outof Place), the filly is a full-sister to theaforementioned GISW Rightly So. AShe=s very different than Rightly So,in that she=s a chestnut with a lot ofwhite on her, while Rightly So was abay. The Out of Place came out in her,@said Thomas. AShe=s a very powerful-looking filly who I don=t think is justgoing to be a sprinter. I think she=sgoing to be a seven-furlong or a milehorse. She=s got a huge body on her.@

The 2012 juvenile season got off to a positive start atBarretts March last week, where average was up 8.7%and median was up 21.4%. Thomas is optimistic thatOBS will carry the momentum forward. AI thoughtBarretts was a very good sale, and I think there=s anawful lot of nice horses here,@ she said. AI know a lot ofmy friends here have nice horses, and I think it=s goingto be very solid in the middle of the market. Likealways, you=re going to have horses who don=t findhomes, and they=re not all going to be good horses. It=sstill early in the year, too, and it just may be too earlyfor some of them. But I expect it to be a strong, solidsale.@ -LM
