Why Geese Fly in a “V” Formation
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXL5M30A_sg
Running Time: 3:50
An Example of Synergy
• Geese fly in a V-formation when traveling south for the winter.• Geese can fly 71% farther in this formation than alone.• When a goose flaps its wings, it creates an updraft for the goose that follows• As the lead goose gets tired, he will rotate to the back of the V and allow another goose to take the lead position.• The geese honk to encourage one another.• When one of the geese gets sick or wounded, two geese will follow it down to protect it until it gets better or dies.
Quick-Write
• On a scratch piece of paper, take three minutes to write about the lessons that can be learned from the geese.• Be prepared to share out with the class!
Another Example of Synergy
• One 2” x 4” beam can support 607 pounds.• So two 2” x 4” beams should be able to support 1,214 pounds….right?• Actually, two 2” x 4” beams can support 1, 821 pounds - Nailed together they can support 4,878 pounds• Three 2” x 4” beams nailed together can support 8,481 pounds!
