Glorious Days Victorious in Mile (cont. from p1) On his day, Glorious Days is one of the world=s topmilers, and exchanged blows with the now-sidelinedformer Horse of the Year Ambitious Dragon (NZ) (Pins{Aus}) last season, finishing second to that foe whenfirst-up in the Sha Tin Trophy H. before turning thetables in the G2 Jockey Club Mile. The Dragonreclaimed the upper hand in the head-to-head battle inthis race, but Glorious Days drew even again in theStewards= Cup--with Ambitious Dragon fourth--in earlyJanuary. Third to his archrival in the Queen=s SilverJubilee Cup in March, the 6-year-old was fourth to DanExcel (Ire) (Shamardal) when favored in the G1 Champions Mile May 5 and called it a seasonfollowing an 11th to Lord Kanaloa (Jpn) (KingKamehameha {Jpn}) in the G1 Yasuda Kinen in TokyoJune 2. Double digits for much of the betting, Glorious Dayswas supported late and was the fourth choice in thefield.

Drawn one from the outside here, the veteran wasallowed to drift back through the field as Americanoutsider King Kreesa (King Cugat) crossed over and seta pressured pace from Helene Spirit (Ire)(Footstepsinthesand {GB}) down to his inside. OlivierDoleuze had Gold-Fun handy to what was only amoderate opening half-mile in :47.70. Moonlight Cloudwas three wide andwithout cover incenterfield with SkyLantern in her wakeand Glorious Daysfollowing in behindthat one into theturn. King Kreesa hadrun his race by thetime they reachedthe stretch, leavingHelene Spirit in front, but that was short-lived, as Gold-Funraced into the leadthree off the inside at the 250-meter point. But at thesame time, Douglas Whyte was getting Glorious Dayswound up, and they quickened past the one-pacedMoonlight Cloud entering the final eighth of a mile. Heeyeballed Gold-Fun 100 meters from home and wascomfortably enough in front to allow Whyte some timeto showboat for the cameras. AWe were always pretty comfortable,@ the >DurbanDemon= offered. AOnce we went past Moonlight Cloud,I just needed to keep his momentum up,@ he concluded. The foreign females were the disappointment of therace, as Moonlight Cloud could do no better than sixth, while Sky Lantern trailed. AI=m sorry. She didn=t relax today,@ jockey ThierryJarnet told owner George Strawbridge. AShe wasn=therself, and the ground was plenty quick enough.@ OfSky Lantern, her jockey Richard Hughes said,ADisappointing. She ran very flat today and I don=t knowwhy. I was very tender on her, I didn=t want to hurther.@

VIDEO Hong Kong owners and trainers always have an eyeand an ear on the European 3-year-old crop from yearto year, looking for that diamond in the rough, that as-yet unfinished sophomore who could blossom into anearly 4-year-old and therefore become a prospect forHong Kong=s domestic centerpiece, the Hong KongDerby. Few horses have come to this jurisdiction withthe expectations--or, indeed, the price tag--of AkeedMofeed, who was a five-length maiden winner andnarrow runner-up in the G2 Beresford S. at two whentrained by John Oxx for owner Jaber Abdullah. Thoseefforts had the colt on many watchers= Derby lists, buthe missed Epsom and was ambitiously having his firstrun of 2012 when he finished a distant fourth of fivebehind Camelot (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) in the G1 IrishDerby in June, but he bounced back to land the ListedPlatinum S. by five lengths at Cork in early August, andthat got the attention of the locals. Akeed Mofeed was snapped up by 50-year-old PanSutong, a successful Hong Kong entrepreneur whospent some time in the United States in his teens andnow heads up the Goldin Group, a holding company fora variety of companies he now owns. This pastSeptember, Sutong=s Goldin Australia Pty Ltd.announced the acquisition of Lindsay Park Stud inSouth Australia, the home of former Hong Kong trainerDavid Hayes. Sutong gave a reported HK$20 million(US$2,579,067) for Akeed Mofeed--he alsosimultaneously acquired G1 Hong Kong Mile runner-upGold-Fun (Ire)--and turned the duo over to RichardGibson, who was in his infancy in the local trainingranks, but who sent out Doctor Dino (Fr) (Muhtathir) towin the G1 Hong Kong Vase in 2007 and 2008. A burly sort with a stallion=s mentality anddisposition, Akeed Mofeed was a troubled, butpromising third in his local debut this past January andsixth in the second leg of the 4-year-old series, theHong Kong Classic Cup over 1800 meters Feb. 17.Most horses would use that as a steppingstone to theDerby four weeks down the road, but Gibson opted foran 1800-meter handicap in between, and the coltobliged at odds-on. Made the 4-5 favorite on Derbyday, he found himself fairly far back in the field, butturned it on late and raced past Endowing (Ire) (DanehillDancer {Ire}) to score by a half-length and repay a goodchunk of his owner=s confidence. He wasn=t quite ready for prime time, not yet, atleast, when fifth to Military Attack (Ire) (Oratorio {Ire})in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup in April and time wascalled on the campaign. The bay took on his stablemateand Derby third-place finisher Gold-Fun in his first twostarts this term over distances more to the latter=s

liking, running ninthin the National DayCup H. going sevenfurlongs Oct. 1 andseventh in the ShaTin Trophy H. Oct.27 at a mile. Gibsonwas toying with theidea of trying AkeedMofeed in blinkersand allowed the

colt to train in them in an attempt to get him tighter forthe upcoming Internationals. The conditioner electednot to use the equipment in the G2 Jockey Club Cupover this distance Nov. 17, and though he was keen inrunning, he switched out and flashed home to miss bya head to Endowing, setting the stage for this truecoming-out party. A horse that needs his cover, Akeed Mofeed was notinconvenienced by drawing the inside barrier in thisfield of 12 and landed in fourth passing the judge forthe first time, as the well-backed Tokei Halo was bestaway and set the pace from Same World (GB) (HawkWing). Little Mike was beaten for speed, butnonetheless got a good spot in third, while ChristopheSoumillon had Cirrus des Aigles, racing for the fourthtime in Hong Kong, right alongside Akeed Mofeedracing around the first corner. The Japanese raider wasallowed a fairly soft time of it on the engine, getting theopening half-mile in a comfortable :50.49, and all werehappy with their positions heading for the half-milemarker. Douglas Whyte began to feel for Akeed Mofeednearing the lane, but Soumillon was tracking his everymove, and Whyte=s only option at the 400-meter pointwas to try to get through at the fence. That move wasnot immediately available to Whyte, as Tokei Halo kepton, and Cirrus des Aigles remained glued to his outside. The Sha Tin faithful held its collective breath, waitingto see if the run would come for the second favorite, and Whyte was able to get off the inside as Cirrus desAigles weakened slightly and drove past Tokei Halo tothe delight of a clearly relieved Gibson.

AHe's a very well-bred colt. He needed InternationalGroup 1 recognition and he's achieved that today,@ saidGibson, who has from the outset believed in the colt=sability. AHe's a very talented horse with a stud futureahead of him and racing abroad beckons, but we'llconsider our options before finalizing any plans,@ headded, indicating that races at home, in Dubai orAustralia were among the candidates. It was the second win on the card for Whyte, whoupset Sutong=s Gold-Fun in the Mile with Glorious Days.

Say What? AHe jumped well from the gate and travelled verycomfortably with his pace to the turn. It was reallyclose. I was very happy with his performance, but my101st Group 1 win will have to wait until next time.@Tokei Halo jockey Yutaka Take

AWe regret the bad draw he got because he was widewithout cover in the early stages, and that must havecost him something at the end. But we=re very proud ofhim and hopefully we will be back next year to tryagain.@ Corine Barande-Barbe, trainer of Cirrus des Aigles

Coming into last year=s Hong Kong Sprint, Japanesehorses had not fared especially well and local horseshad dominated, with nine victories in the last 10runnings. Lord Kanaloa rectified that, flashing home todefeat Cerise Cherry (SAf) (Goldkeeper) with a fair bitof authority, and the bay was back looking to becomethe third back-to-back winner of the Sprint, followingFalvelon (Aus) in 2000-2001 and the great SilentWitness (Aus) in 2003 and 2004. Sacred Kingdom(Aus) (Encosta de Lago {Aus}) is also a two-time Sprintwinner. Lord Kanaloa=s chances weren=t done any favors atThursday=s barrier draw where he was assigned postposition 12. No horse had previously overcome a gatehigher than nine, but if there was a horse in trainingwho could overcome that obstacle, it was LordKanaloa. And boy did he ever.

The 5-year-old, said to be having his final career startin the Sprint, was away without incident out wide, butthe same could not be said for 2011 champ Lucky Nine(Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who went straight into the air whenthe gates flew. The odds-on favorite settled slightlybetter than mid-division, and though he was three wideto the turn, he did have cover behind G1 Nunthorpe S.winner Jwala (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). On the bridleand simply cruising past the 400-meter marker, LordKanaloa was eased out to the four path in upperstretch, ambled to the front nearing the furlong groundsand raced away to stamp his superiority over his rivals.Sole Power faced the wind for the vast majority of therace and finished off well to be a longshot runner-up,while Frederick Engels, mired in some traffic leaving thequarter pole, was an admirable third. AThis was the best performance of his career, and Icould feel him ready to unleash his run on the hometurn,@ winning jockey Yasunari Iwata offered. AMaybehe knew it was his final race. Once the gates openedhe was just brilliant today. It=s a great day for us toshow what a wonderful horse he is, and to win this fora second time in front of his many race fans in HongKong.@ The race was marred by a fatal injury sustained byJwala inside the final furlong. The 4-year-old filly wassandwiched between a wayward Charles the Great (Ire)(Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) and Lucky Nine, clippedheels and cartwheeled over the ground before astunned crowd. Jockey Steven Drowne was consciousfollowing the accident, but was taken to a local hospitalfor observation.

VIDEO. Since 2001, when Stay Gold (Jpn) (Sunday Silence)struck for Japan, the Hong Kong Vase had beendominated by European-based horses and arepresentative of the host nation had not beensuccessful in the race since the Ivan Allan-trainedIndigenous (Ire) (Marju {Ire}) in 1998. It took Dominanta little more than 147 seconds to put pay to thosedubious streaks, as he came from worst to first to giveleading local jockey Zac Purton his first win in theevent. A disappointing eighth as the 7-2 second choice inthe 2012 Hong Kong Derby, Dominant earned his firstlocal black-type in the Queen Mother Memorial H.before failing when third as the favorite in theChampions and Chater Cup to close that season.

He repeated those placings in 2013 and returnedfrom a five-month hiatus to be last of 12 behind Gold-Fun (Ire) (Le Vie Dei Colori {GB}) in the Sha Tin TrophyH. over an insufficient 1600 meters Oct. 27 and wasthe victim of some poor racing luck when eighth, butbeaten only five lengths by Endowing (Ire) (DanehillDancer {Ire}) in the G2 Jockey Club Cup going 2000meters Nov. 17. Drawn widest in a field reduced to 12by the scratchings of American St. Leger winnerDandino (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and the sneaky sophomoreGalileo Rock (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Dominant wasimmediately taken hold of out of the stalls by Purtonand was guided down to the inside with a circuit totravel as Nymphea (Ire) (Dylan Thomas {Ire}) took themalong at a steady tempo up front. The Fugue found adecent position in midfield, while defending championRed Cadeaux (GB) (Cadeaux Genereux {GB}) was offthe course and four wide around the first turn.Nymphea led down the back from Liberator (Aus)(Encosta de Lago {Aus}), and Purton got Dominant offthe inside and raced alongside Dunaden into and aroundthe far turn. That duo commenced rallies in tandemnearing the stretch, Dominant switching wide into theclear and Jamie Spencer riding for luck inside. Despitecovering all that extra ground, Red Cadeaux loomed upat midstretch and looked dangerous for a stride or two,but Dominant was in high gear by this point, hit thefront a furlong from home and held sway late. TheFugue, shuffled in traffic on the turn and short of roomin upper stretch, powered home in a lucklessperformance, while Dunaden and Red Cadeaux weregallant in filling out the minors. AWhen we drew gate 14, my jaw dropped out and Ithought we had no chance at all,@ admitted winningtrainer John Moore. AHe was given a fantastic ride byZac. He was allowed to find his feet and he got to theline even better than I thought he would because Ithought he might be just lacking mileage in his legs todo what he did today. I was wrong, I erred. Zac Purton, the great rider--we are up here with a race we didn=texpect to win.@

Say What? AIt was a tricky race. I was well placed and suddenlya horse just stopped and took me with him. The winnergot first run on me and I had lost momentum.@ jockey William Buick on The Fugue

‘Whyte’ On the Money... For all that he has accomplished over the years inHong Kong with 13 riding titles to his credit, SouthAfrican Douglas Whyte had but one win on the biggestracing day in the SAR, and that was 15 years in therear view. In the span of 40 minutes Sunday afternoon,Whyte tripled his win tally on International day, bootinghome Glorious Days (Aus) in the Mile followed by aheart-in-your-mouth score aboard heavily hyped AkeedMofeed (GB) in the Cup. AIt's been a while between drinks, but good thingscome to those who are patient. I needed a day liketoday again,@ said Whyte, who carried the Pan Sutongsilks in the Cup, the same ones he streaked past in theMile. Richard Gibson, trainer of Gold-Fun and AkeedMofeed, also paid homage to Whyte, while landing a bitof a dig at the same time. AIt's a great privilege to work with top, professionaljockeys like Douglas,@ said Gibson. AI did tell him before

the race that I would only forgivehim for the Mile if he won the Cup.@ Whyte completed a 13th straightriding title in 2012/2013,registering 101 victories including a6-timer at Sha Tin last April. Hesurvived a tussle with Brett Prebblein the 2009/2010 season andshook clear of Zac Purton over thefinal two months last campaign, butbarring something unforseen,Whyte will lose his crown this year,as he already trails the hot-ridingand Hong Kong Vase-winningPurton by 22 wins.

While that might be something of a blow to the egocome season=s end, given Sunday=s results, Whyte iscertain to have lots to be proud of.

SackvilleDonald Have Lots to Crow About... The Berkshire, England-based SackvilleDonald agencyof Ed Sackville and Alastair Donald, were representedby no fewer than nine horses at Sunday=s InternationalRaces, including Vase winner Dominant (Ire) (Cacique{Ire}), who was purchased privately and sent to HongKong to be trained by John Moore. Originally raced byHighclere Thoroughbred Racing=s >Isinglass= Syndicateand trained by Roger Varian, Dominant won the,150,000 Tattersalls Millions 3-Y-O Cup in 2011 andwas subsequently third to the classy Twice Over (GB)(Observatory) in the G2 York S. prior to his sale toHong Kong. The agency was also responsible forPacking Whiz (GB) (Trade Fair {GB}), a closing third inthe Mile and Frederick Engels (GB) (Iceman {GB}), whoendured a rocky trip, but was a good third in the Sprint.

Millions and Millions of Reasons to Smile for HKJC... On an afternoon where it was at least conceivablethat the usually dominating Hong Kong horses couldget shut out, the home team retained the trophies inthe Mile and the Cup while posting a rare victory in theVase. Adding international flavor to what Hong Kong

Jockey Club officials like to referto as the >World TurfChampionships,= Lord Kanaloaturned in one of the most visuallyimpressive performances, if notthe most, in the history of theevent, successfully defending histitle in the Sprint. AThis is the day when the eyesof the international sporting worldare on Hong Kong. We are alwaystrying to improve and set abenchmark for international racingevents and today we are veryhappy with the result,@ said HongKong Jockey Club CEO WinfriedEngelbrecht-Bresges. AIt was a

tremendous day for Hong Kong. The last time we wonthe Vase was in 1998 when Douglas Whyte was sittingon Indigenous-- Douglas has had a long wait since thenbut he was rewarded with two wins today,@ he added.Cont. p9

Turnover for the program was a mind-bogglingHK$1.364 billion (about US$175.9 million), a 7%increase from 2012 and the best since 1997. ATurnover was up and that is satisfying, but thismeeting is not about turnover, it is about internationalsport and it has been a great week of internationalracing,@ said Engelbrecht-Bresges. AThe challenge nowis how we can do better next year, but that is what wethrive on.@ Added Bill Nader, the Hong Kong Jockey Club=sExecutive Director of Racing, AFor the hard-workingteam here at the Hong Kong Jockey Club, it is not somuch who wins and who loses, but that we puttogether an international day of racing that Hong Kongcan be proud of. All in all, it was a great race day.@

A # will distinguish first-time stakes-winners, a @ willindicate first-time graded stakes-winners, a s willdenote a first-time Grade/Group 1 winner, a + willindicate first-time starters, an (S) will be used for state-bred races.

The world came to Hong Kong, and, for the mostpart the world was turned away. Both The Fugue (GB)and Cirrus des Aigles (Fr) ran well on Sunday at theInternational races, but both were defeated by locals. The Americans Little Mike and King Kreesa were wellplaced but faltered, while the Japanese superstar LordKanaloa (Jpn) was the only outsider to deny the hometeam in the Sprint. But the world came. And that is what makes eventslike Hong Kong=s International Races, America=sBreeders= Cup and Dubai=s World Cup night soimportant. During the week in Hong Kong, horse peoplefrom all over the globe got together and shared stories, compared notes, argued about a given runner=schances, and enjoyed each other=s company. Thecomradery engendered by these events is palpable. Cont. p10

It was terrific to see two Americans here, andhopefully we=ll see many more in the future. Thesporting aspect of it aside, there figure to be intriguingbusiness opportunities in Asia in the coming decade, and it makes sense for American breeders to betterfamiliarize themselves with the market in this corner ofthe world. As for Sha Tin, it=s an interesting place, fallingimprobably between Aqueduct inJanuary and Churchill Downs on thefirst Saturday in May. The crowd isdifferent from Happy Valley. The HongKong Jockey Club=s Bill Nader told meas much earlier in the week, explainingthat the Happy Valley crowd, indowntown Hong Kong Island, wasmore in search of entertainment (sortof like the crowds at the Derby), whilethe Sha Tin crowd was there to bet.You could see that immediately. Thevast majority of the crowd yesterdayat Sha Tin wore jeans or old khakis, smoked cigarettes, studied theirforms, didn=t talk and didn=t seemoverly emotional about the home

team=sincrediblesuccess. There was no ATiznowwins it for America@ sort offeeling, for sure. Part of me digs that, though. When I=m betting, I don=t wantto be social. I don=t want to flirtwith girls, or see or be seen, ordo much other than study myForm and not talk. It wasactually pretty amazing howquiet 70,000 people could be.Several times yesterday, I wasstruck by the lack of noise. It

wasn=t like that all the time, of course, but there=s nevera point at the Kentucky Derby where you think, Ah, it=skinda peaceful right now. There was plenty of fashion and style yesterday, too, don=t get me wrong, especially in the clubhouse area. Now, the news that a good three of you have beenwaiting to hear: the suit (I got lured into buying ahandmade suit this past week while staying in TsimSha Tsui), arrived Saturday night at my hotel. Sem theTailor (not to be confused with Sam the Tailor, who Iunderstand to be Hong Kong=s most recognizablesuitmaker) had me a tad worried when I showed upearlier in the day and my suit wasn=t in the shop. Sem(who incidentally does not refer to himself as Sem theTailor) assured me he=d have it delivered to my hotel, and when I returned from my walkabout in Central thatnight, there it was in my hotel closet. (Assuming--hoping--the hotel staff put it there, and that Semdoesn=t have a key to my hotel room...) Anyway, it fits.It looks good, I think. Who knows? Cont. p11

Itwas a busy few moments for Benoit, who also signedfor Seal Bay (Ire) (Hernando {Fr}) (lot 340), in foal to SoYou Think (NZ), at i67,000 from Haras d=Etreham. AI remembered her from when she was racing andtrained by David Smaga, so it was a sentimentalpurchase,@ he explained of the dual listed-placed SealBay, who is carrying her fifth foal. AShe=ll stay inFrance, and hopefully pay us back.@ Benoit=s third purchase of the day was Apperella (GB)(Rainbow Quest) (lot 381), a 7-year-old mare carryingto G1 Epsom Derby winner Pour Moi (Ire), for i24,000.

Master of the Trade... A colt by Mastercraftsman (Ire), Europe=s leadingfirst-season sire, proved the most popular of the foalsduring the second session, bringing a final bid ofi165,000 from Clairemont Stud=s Liam Norris. Freshoff consigning the 4-million guineas Dancing Rain (Ire)at Tattersalls last week, Norris was delighted to securelot 392, who he described as Athe nicest colt I=ve seenhere.@ AI absolutely loved him,@ Norris said. AHe=s a beautifulfoal, and I love the sire. I=ve had to pay too much to gethim, but you have to pay a lot for the nice ones. Now I

just have to keep him in onepiece.@ Norris noted that his purchasewould return to Clairemont inEngland, where he would jointhe operation=s other foalpurchases from this fall andprepare to be re-offered nextyear. Clairemont signed for oneyoungster at the GoffsNovember Sale and six atTattersalls two weeks ago.

Lot 392, from the draft of Haras du Bois aux Proux,is out of Ballyvarra (Ire) (Sadler=s Wells), and from theimmediate family of Group 2 winners Cairns (UAE) andTamazirte (Ire). Further down in the pedigree is Group 1winner Wannabe Grand (Ire).

CORRECTION: Yesterday=s TDN incorrectly quotedagent Steve Young on the purchase of Lot 193, Where(Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), at Arqana. His correctcomment was: AI have bought her for an existing clientand she will go to the USA to foal, before we makeany decision about her future. She is in foal to one ofthe two best sires in the world and is out of a Classic-winning mare, but she also stands on her own merit asa very good-looking filly. You have to expect to payquite a bit for a resume like that.@ We regret the error.

The second-highest price for a youngster came late inthe session when Germany=s Stauffenberg Bloodstockswooped at i115,000 for lot 460, a filly from the firstcrop of Poet=s Voice (GB), from the draft of Haras deGrandcamp. The April foal is a half-sister to a pair ofblack-type winners in Group 2 winner Grandcamp (Fr)(Platini {Ger}) and listed winner Piana (Fr) (Doyen {Ire}). AShe=s a lovely foal by a good, young sire,@ saidPhilipp Graf Stauffenberg. Pinhookers were out in full force throughout thesession, with AGB Agency=s Antoine Gronfier gettingthings off to a fast start when snapping up Lot 217, acolt by Iffraaj (GB) out of Maine Rose (GB) (RedRansom) for i82,000. The March-born foal, the secondhorse through the ring and another good sale on theday for Haras de Grandcamp, was purchased as apinhooking prospect for a group of friends acrossEngland and France. Iffraaj has experienced aresurgence this season, with GI Breeders= Cup JuvenileFillies Turf and G1 Fillies Mile winner Chriselliam (Ire)and G1 Moyglare Stud S. winner Rizeena (Ire) to hiscredit. Marco Bozzi got into the mix late in the day whenshelling out i68,000 for lot 479, a February-borndaughter of Dark Angel (Ire) from the family of Group 1performers Vita Nova (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Cortona(Ire) (Caerleon). Bozzi noted that the purchase wasmade for an Italian client, who has been successfulwith pinhooks in recent years, and that the filly wouldbe offered as a yearling. AI liked the way she moved, and her conformation and size,@ he explained. Lot 302 is another bound for next year=s sales afterbeing secured up by Tally Ho Stud=s Roger O=Callaghanfor i55,000. AHe=s coming home, and you=ll see himnext year,@ said O=Callaghan of the son of Medicean(GB), from the Dehesa De Milagro consignment. AHehas good quality, and will hopefully be fast, like hismother.@ The March-born colt is out of Shivering (GB)(Royal Applause {GB}), who broke her maiden in Aprilof her 2-year-old season before being listed-placed thatJuly. Her first foal, New Attack (Ire) (New Approach{Ire}), was also a 2-year-old winner. End users were also in action shopping for foalsyesterday, and one such purchase was lot 235, a sonof Rip Van Winkle (Ire) out of Multiple (Ire) (Mull ofKintyre), who was hammered down to Robert Nataf ofHorse France for i50,000. AShe=s for an existing client to race in France, andshe=s a lovely filly,@ Nataf said. AWe love Rip VanWinkle.@ Rip Van Winkle will be represented by his firstrunners next year, and that crop has been wellrepresented in the sales rings this year. His 55 yearlingsthrough the ring have averaged 75,086gns, with a topprice of 400,000gns at Tattersalls October Book 1.

ELIZA PARK GOES INTERNATIONALBy Kelsey Riley Eliza Park, one of Australia=s most recognized brandson the commercial scene since it was established in1998, in June announced the sale of its operation tothe Hong Kong-based Sun International Group, an

investment company withwide interests in publiccompanies, including hotelsand resorts. The salecomprised the farm=s sixproperties (2500 totalhectares) across the country, including its base in Victoria, which houses its 13 stallions, including Black Caviar=s sireBel Esprit (Aus), as well as

exciting young prospects Magnus (Aus) and Bushranger(Ire). Under the direction of Sun International=s Ting KongChengBwho owns about 40 racehorses in Macau--theoutfit, now coined Eliza Park International, isundergoing a make over. While Eliza Park Internationalwill continue to offer services to outside clientele, it isnow in the process of building up its own broodmareband, with the view of selling the majority of itsproduce in the beginning, and later building up a qualityracing stable. In fact, it has already begun to lay thefoundation for racehorse ownership, with the purchaseof G1 Irish St. Leger winner Voleuse de Coeurs (Ire)(Teofilo {Ire}) in October. The 3-year-old filly ran 10thof 24 in last month=s G1 Melbourne Cup in her firstouting Down Under and in the Eliza Park Internationalsilks, and she is currently being spelled with an eyetoward some of Sydney=s prestigiouscontests in the Australian autumn. Alvin Lui, the Chief InvestmentOfficer of Sun International, wasappointed Chief Executive Officer ofEliza Park International shortly afterthe farm=s sale, and he explained thathe and his team became students ofthe racing industry after first visitingEliza Park last year. AI was not in this industry, andsince last year we=ve studied theindustry,@ Lui said. AMainly breeding, and racing of course, but we have positioned ourselvesas breeders now, and we will probably have moreracehorses in the future.@ Lui explained that while racing is Ting Kong Cheng=shobby, they see it as an attractive businessopportunity, especially with the current direction of theAustralian industry. AWe quite like the industry,@ he said. AIt is unique, it isdifferent from other investments we have done, and webelieve there are opportunities business-wise. We haveseen the prize money as well as the prices of horsesgoing up in Australia.@ As its new name suggests, the future of Eliza ParkInternational won=t be entirely Down Under. Over thepast few weeks, Lui, along with bloodstock advisorDavid O=Callaghan and nominations salesman PhilMarshall, has been shopping at the breeding stock salesat Tattersalls and Arqana, stocking up on mares as wellas assessing the industry in Europe. AEliza Park has a long history in Australia, so wewould like to maintain its position in Australia, and thereason we now call it Eliza Park International is becausewe would like to participate on a worldwide level,@ Luisaid. AWe=d also like to see more clients and investorsfrom other countries in Eliza Park and Australia from theNorthern Hemisphere.@ ADavid O=Callaghan and Phil Marshall and I have comehere to look at the market in the Northern Hemisphere,@he continued. AWe have been looking at otheropportunities in the Northern Hemisphere. The sales arepretty strong, and the market is very good.@ The Eliza Park team must have liked what they saw inthe European market, as they signed for six mares atTattersalls, and a further eight through the first twodays at Arqana. Their purchases included Group 3winner Moment in Time (Ire) (Tiger Hill {Ire}) (lot 1540at Tattersalls) for 350,000gns, and listed winnerFestoso (Ire) (Diesis) (lot 180b at Arqana), in foal toGalileo (Ire), for i420,000. O=Callaghan, an advisor to Eliza Park for around 10years, explained that the Eliza Park Internationalinterests would all foal down in Europe at an as-yetundecided location, and their prospects would be re-evaluated next year. AThey=ll foal down here, then subject to what type offoals they have, the foals will be resold in Europe, andthen we=ll assess whether the mares get bred back inthe UK and resold, or whether they go to Australia,@O=Callaghan said. A[Eliza Park International] has about35-40 mares now, and some of those will be sold, sothat=ll come back to around 20. Over time, we=d like toget the broodmare band to around 100. It=ll take sometime, because you can=t always buy what you want.@ O=Callaghan explained that it was the strength of thepedigrees, as well as the market, in Europe thatencouraged the Eliza Park International shareholders toget involved. AThere are different pedigrees, different families anddifferent physical types,@ he said. AThe European mareshave done very well in Australia over the last 50 or 60years. They give you a bit of an outcross to what youhave at home, so again it=s just something a bitdifferent. It enables you to use different types ofstallions and different pedigrees, and have access to adifferent marketplace. As we saw last week it=s sostrong in Europe at the moment that it seems silly notto be involved in it somehow.@

O=Callaghan noted that the Eliza Park Internationalexpansion could also includes forays into the shuttlestallion sector. AThat=s certainly something we=re keen to look into,@he said. AWe=ve shuttled quite a few stallions from theNorthern Hemisphere over the years, and that=ssomething we want to continue to do, but probablymore in our own ownership.@ O=Callaghan said that Eliza Park International couldexpand into markets in the East. AEliza Park International is listed on the Hong Kongstock exchange, and their other businesses allow themaccess to a very big client base in Asia and China,@ heexplained. ASo that=s something we=re certainly awareof, and in the event that something happens in China,we=re well positioned to be able to take advantage of it.Certainly we can continue trading horses in Singaporeand Hong Kong, as we have done in the past.@
