• OYA is an organization that facilitates, develops and promotes initiatives that recognize and address employment needs in an ever-changing global economy through the involvement of employers, workers, educators, public officials, organized labor, students and parents in order to prepare an Ozaukee County and surrounding workforce. Ozaukee Youth Apprenticeship is responsible for facilitating the Wisconsin Youth Apprenticeship programs in Ozaukee County.

What is Ozaukee Youth Apprenticeship (OYA)

Members may include representatives of educational institutions, business, industry, organized labor, government, community based organizations, as well as, interested citizens.

What are Wisconsin Youth Apprenticeships?

Wisconsin's Youth Apprenticeships integrate school-based and work-based learning.

• *Students receive academic and occupational skills leading to both a high school diploma and a Certificate of

Occupational Proficiency in a specific industry.

• *One and two-year paid apprenticeships prepare students who:

• *Plan to enter the workforce directly from high school *Want to apply for a Registered Apprenticeship

• *Plan to enroll in a technical college or a university in an occupationally related degree program.

• Student Investment

• Students work in partnership with

an employer and high school or technical school instructors to receive the best skills and knowledge possible.

Students work a minimum of 450 hours in the one-year Youth Apprenticeship and 900 hours in the two-year Youth

Apprenticeship.

• Students are encouraged to work up to full-time during the summers before and/or after junior or senior years

How do students get started?Students submit applications by Monday March 2nd 2020The Youth Apprenticeship applications are found on the

Ozaukee Youth Apprenticeship website:

https://www.pwssd.k12.wi.us/domain/40Students fill out the applications by typing the information into the Youth

Apprentice applications form found the OYA website. (a typed application is preferred and highly recommended)

Print 2 copies of the completed application, one for your records and one signed and dated by student and parent or guardian.

A complete application includes : The typed application pages 3 letters of recommendation

transcripts and a school attendance report.

Applications should be given to the students OYA high school YA coordinator for review

OYA Interview Training•

2020 OYA interview training for YAstudents will be held on

Tuesday March 17th 2020

• from 5:30 to 7:00 PM

• at Port Washington High School Lighthouse room

How are students hired as a Youth Apprentice

It’s a Partnership *Properly completed applications are sent to interested employers in April.

*Employers contact YA coordinators and let them know which students they will call directly for an initial interview.

*Ozaukee Youth Apprenticeship coordinators may also set up individual or group interviews with employers. Check OYA calendar for details

*If the employer decides to hire a student the Employer & Consortium Coordinators will arrange a Youth Apprenticeship signing meeting.

*The employer representative, possible mentors, the student, parent/guardian and OYA consortium coordinator meet to plan the Youth Apprenticeship

and an Educational Training Agreement (ETA) is signed by all parties.

*A start date is set and the student starts their Youth Apprenticeship.

Student Work Hours*Students could start work anytime after April 1st and

work a minimum of 450 hours per year (two-year 900 hours)

*Work hour completion timeline for a one-year apprenticeship is April 1st 2020 to August 31st 2021

(two-year apprenticeship timeline April 1st 2020 to August 31st 2022)

*Students may average 10 to 15 hours a week during the school year and up to full-time hours during the summer.

Work hours/schedule are discussed at the YA Signing and Planning Meeting and are often adjusted during the

apprenticeship.

Skills Standards Checklist (SSC) & YA periodic evaluations

Quarterly/Trimester evaluations are reviewed (along with the Skills checklist skills the student has completed that Quarterly/Trimester)

Evaluation is signed and dated by the student and mentor and turned into the OYA coordinators when quarterly/trimester grades are due.

The Skills Standards Checklist (SSC) and a Post Completion Survey, are considered the final documents needed for completion of the Youth

Apprenticeship. The student then receives a Certificate of Occupational Proficiency from the Wisconsin Department of

Workforce Development (DWD).
