All Too Hard (Casino Prince), a
dynamic racehorse who downed
the champion of his generation in
Pierro (Lonhro), has taken longer
to establish himself as a sire of note than his
Coolmore contemporary but it is two of Vinery
Stud’s former stallions and a Hunter Valley
newcomer that he has the potential to replicate.
That is the view of Adam White, Vinery
Stud’s bloodstock manager, who yesterday
made comparisons between All Too Hard
and that of long-time stud servants Mossman
(Snippets) and Testa Rossa (Perugino) after the
half-brother to Black Caviar sired Saturday’s
Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) Behemoth.
The David Jolly-trained Behemoth, a pinhook
disaster-turned-racetrack moneyspinner, is the
second Group 1 winner for All Too Hard after
another of his sons, Alligator Blood, took out
the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) earlier this
year in a breakthrough milestone victory for the
stallion. Continued on page 2>>

“I think last season people really started
to take notice because he came up with the star that he needed in Alligator
Blood and he had ten individual stakes winners all-up,” White said.
“He’s rolled that into the new season as well and started off with
a Group 1 winner and he’s currently second on the leading sires table
by earnings now, which is good, and he’s getting a nice book of mares
because of it. He represents fantastic value.
He can get a top-class runner, the trainers like them and they sell well
at the sales.”
A four-time Group 1 winner as a three-year-old in 2012-13, including
when defeating Pierro in the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), All Too
Hard covered more than 100 mares in each of his seven years at stud and
White revealed he already has 140 booked in this term.
White expects the momentum All Too Hard has generated in recent
times to continue.
“He’s probably not renowned as being a two-year-old sire - although
he did get two stakes-winning two-year-olds last season - but generally
they are a breed, a bit like Behemoth, that show good talent early and the
older they get, the better they get,” he said.
“He is similar to Written Tycoon. He was a horse who started off
moderately and hovered around that $25,000 to $30,000 service fee for
quite a number of years until a lot of crops came up under him and he
went to another level.
“Who knows if All Too Hard goes on to do that, but he’s certainly got
the numbers to back him up and now he’s proven he can get a good Group
1 horse, and two Group 1 horses this year, he could reach bigger things.”
He added: We’ve looked at All Too Hard coming into this season a bit
like a Mossman or a Testa Rossa. They were at that level for a long time.
They were good proven horses who were popular at the sales. We see him
as that sort of stallion and getting a good book because of that.
“In the years to come he could even go back to a higher level.”
This year, All Too Hard stands for an unchanged fee of $27,500 (inc
GST).
“He works pedigree wise with a lot of different lines of mare. Certainly,
he has worked with More Than Ready, you’d expect that with our support,
but interestingly enough he’s worked with other Danehill-line mares,”
White said.
“He’s had Hard Landing and Cuba and a few other stakes winners like
that out of Snitzel and Redoute’s mares, so he’s crossing well with other
Danehill-line mares, so you can certainly do that. Because he’s a grandson
of Flying Spur, the Danehill’s far enough back and, physically, you can just
about send any type of mare to him.
“He is good for maiden mares because he puts plenty of size and strength
into them and he’ll give you a great chance of getting the mare underway as a
producer with his record now. There’s a lot we’ve learnt in that respect.”
Underlining the All Too Hard-Danehill (Danzig)-line cross, the most
expensive yearling sold this year by All Too Hard was the Vinery Stud-
consigned first foal out of stakes-placed two-year-old Spoils (Snitzel) at
$300,000 at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast in January.
That colt was purchased by Hawkes Racing and White said trainers
were now understanding how to best look after All Too Hard’s progeny.
“Because All Too Hard was a Group-winning two-year-old, trainers
probably pushed them a little early,” he said.
“They’ve got great attitudes, so they probably thought they were able
to do that at the time, but I think they’ve become accustomed to them not
being two-year-olds now and that they’re better left alone and they get
better as they get older.
“From the trainers’ point of view, they’re being a bit more patient with
them and that’s why we’re seeing the results now.”
Behemoth, meanwhile, was runner-up in the 2019 The Goodwood and
fourth in this year’s race before scoring at the highest level at Caulfield on Saturday.
He was a $120,000 Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale purchase in
2016 but 12 months later the big colt was overlooked by most and was
subsequently traded on for the paltry sum of $6,000 to Grand Syndicates
at the 2017 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale.
White praised the patience of Jolly and Grand Syndicates throughout
Behemoth’s 16-start career.
“David’s managed the horse really well. He didn’t tax him too much
early on and there’s still plenty of racing upside left in him yet. He’s placed
him really well and it’s good to see him come to the fore yesterday.”

Phoenix buys into PierataAfter selling down its stake in Golden Slipper
winner Farnan (Not A Single Doubt) and
parting with high-class colt Prague (Redoute’s
Choice), Phoenix Thoroughbreds has
purchased a significant share in Aquis Farm’s
first season sire, the Group 1-winning sprinter
Pierata (Lonhro). Phoenix Thoroughbreds,
which celebrated success at Rosehill on
Saturday with colt Holyfield (I Am Invincible)
landing the Ming Dynasty (Gr 3, 1400m), also
has an interest in Vinery Stud’s first season sire
Exceedance (Exceed And Excel). “You only
have to glance at his race record to see what a
talent he was on the track and as a son of Pierro,
we are confident he can follow in his father's
hoofprints as a leading stallion. We will be
supporting him with plenty of our mares as well
as in the sales ring,” Phoenix chief executive
Amer Abdulaziz said in a statement. Pierata
stands for an introductory fee of $44,000 (inc
GST) at Lincoln Farm in the Hunter Valley,
Aquis Farm’s NSW base in 2020.
Racing NSW to investigate Phoenix’s bona fidesMeanwhile, Racing NSW chief steward Marc
Van Gestel has confirmed the governing body is
investigating the bona fides of the international
operation Phoenix Thoroughbreds. The Sydney
Morning Herald yesterday reported that Racing
NSW had joined Racing Victoria, which is
“in contact with international jurisdictions”,
in considering action against Phoenix over
allegations of money laundering relating to
the OneCoin cryptocurrency fraud. Amer
Abdulaziz, the company’s chief executive, has
denied all allegations. Phoenix has outlined
plans to withdraw from British racing while
authorities in France have banned the
operation from racing horses in the country.
Darley stallions on display in virtual paradeDarley became the latest operation to engage
in a virtual stallion parade yesterday, with
Covid-19 making the traditional functions
logistically difficult. The virtual parade allowed
breeders and enthusiasts to view the Darley
roster from home, with stallions based at
both Kelvinside in NSW and Northwood Park
in Victoria in the one display. In addition to
mainstays Lonhro (Octagonal) and Exceed
And Excel (Danehill) as well as rising star
Brazen Beau, it was a first opportunity to
present new additions Blue Point (Shamardal),
Microphone (Exceed And Excel) and Too Darn
Hot (Dubawi). To view Darley’s virtual parade,

Rosemont stalwarts head stallion viewingRosemont Stud will be the latest stud to respond
to the challenges presented by Covid-19 by
conducting their stallion parades in a digital
format throughout this week. The leading
Victoria stud will showcase their six-strong
roster individually each evening through a
stream on their Facebook page at 6pm, starting
with newcomer Strasbourg (I Am Invincible)
tonight. The feature will include key interviews
and analysis on each of their stallions, with an
invitation to submit questions by commenting
beneath the stream.
Baby to resume at The ValleyLightly raced stayer Surprise Baby (Shocking),
a leading Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m)
contender, is set to resume in the John F
Feehan Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Moonee Valley
on Saturday. The six-year-old gelding, who won
five of his 11 starts during an extended first
preparation, ran fifth in last year’s Melbourne
Cup and was spelled with the sole focus on
returning to the race on the first Tuesday in
November. ‘’We are not tippy toeing on egg-
shells,’’ trainer Paul Preusker told Racing.com.
‘’We know what he can do and where he’s got
to be and we’ve got him there. I’ve been pretty
mindful that last prep was his first prep so we’ve
been happy to take our time, but it has been a
long wait. Let’s hope I’ve got it right.’’
Behemoth to return to GoolwaThe Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m)
looms for Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner
Behemoth (All Too Hard), who will return to
trainer David Jolly’s South Australian base
before another tilt at a Group 1. Jolly had
intended to leave Behemoth with trainers Jason
Warren and Dean Krongold but he has now
elected to bring him home before targeting the
Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes. ‘’We’d set things in
place and I sent the gear with him in case we
might stay but we aren’t too sure if we are going
to run in two or three weeks and it’s difficult
for calls to be made with him by people that
haven’t dealt with him before,’’ Jolly told Racing.
com. “You are putting a fair bit of pressure on
them coming off a Group 1 win. You are putting
them on a hiding to nothing and while there is
nothing wrong with him staying over there, we
can probably make a better call on him here at
home. We’ve got a few unique qualities about
home with good access to the beach and he’s
used to it. He’s a good traveller, so we thought
we’d bring him home and assess him ourselves.”

Guineas could be Glenfiddich’s next runGlenfiddich’s (Fastnet Rock) third in
the Memsie Stakes against older horses
has trainer Peter Moody contemplating
running the colt in the Caulfield Guineas
(Gr 1, 1600m) without another run. “I’m
very proud of him, I think he’s a high-class
colt. He didn’t get around the corner all
that well, and even that might be because
he overreacted to Craig (Newitt) who is a
left hand rider,” Moody told Racing.com
yesterday. “Also, Streets Of Avalon to his
outside in that three-deep line probably
fired him up around the back too. He’s got a
big race in him, and I have just got to target
him at it. His next race could be the Caulfield
Guineas in six weeks’ time. We might keep
him fresh, I’m mindful that he had a lot of
racing as a two-year-old and I want him to
enjoy his racing and he did that today, he
was so well behaved. So, the Guineas is six
weeks away, we could trial in three weeks,
but I’ll speak to the owners and unless I see
something in him that tells him I need to run
him again, it’s a real option."
Eustace reaffirms Moir as Anders’ likely aimSaturday’s dominant San Domenico Stakes
(Gr 3, 1100m) winner Anders (Not A Single
Doubt) is likely to head to Melbourne for
the A J Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) in a bid
to enhance the colt’s appeal as a stallion
prospect. The Everest (1200m) had been
touted as an option for the Ciaron Maher and
David Eustace-trained three-year-old soon
after his three-and-a-quarter length Rosehill
romp but the Moonee Valley sprint looms
large. “I had a chat with the boss (Maher) this
morning and that’s where he’s leaning, the
Moir,” Eustace told RSN yesterday. “He’s on
him at the beach this morning actually and at
some stage he will come down for the Moir,
that’s the most likely scenario. He’s obviously
going to get a lovely weight and if he’s able to
jump and run like he did yesterday over 1000
metres at The Valley, he’s going to get a lot of
horses out of their comfort zone and be hard
to catch.”
See You Soon to trialQuirky three-year-old See You Soon
(Siyouni), who was scratched as favourite
from the Silver Shadow Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m)
after being unable to be loaded into the gates,
will barrier trial at Rosehill the morning.
Trainer Jean Dubois will attempt to have
the stewards embargo lifted on dual Group-
placed filly See You Soon in heat one over
1030 metres with Glen Boss taking the ride.
In the same heat is the David Payne-trained
VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) hopeful Montefilia
(Kermadec), a last-start winner, and the Chris
Waller-trained Haut Brion Her (Zoustar). The
five-year-old mare has not raced since last
October when she took the Blazer Stakes (Gr
2, 1400m) at Flemington. Click here to view

Sale winner disqualified after jockey weighs in lightJockey Michael Walker has been fined $2,000
after weighing in light after winning race six
on Excelman (Reliable Man) ($2.70 favourite)
at Sale yesterday. The Richard Laming-trained
four-year-old, who was resuming from a spell,
took out the Benchmark 64 Handicap (1400m)
by three lengths before Walker returned to scale
in excess of one kilogram below his handicapped
60 kilograms. Stewards disqualified the horse. A
lengthy inquiry after the final race found a lead
bag had fallen from his gear after weighing out.
“I am definitely disappointed from the outcome,
more for the owners and (trainer) Richard
Laming, his whole stable and his team as the
horse was ready to win today,’’ Walker told Racing.
com. “I’ve done my job. It’s been made clear that I
did weigh out with the lead bag. How it’s fallen off
between the scales and going out, who’s to know.
I am very disappointed but at the end of the day,
the onus falls on the jockey. I’ve got to cop the
blame because at the end of the day, I’ve got to
check my gear.’’
Lane cops ten-meeting ban Damian Lane has been outed for ten meetings
and fined $200 for overuse of the whip for his
ride on the fourth-placed Steel Skies (Fiorente)
in race four at Sale yesterday. The suspension
means Lane will miss Saturday’s Feehan Stakes
meeting at Moonee Valley.
Dates set for Hyeronimus appeal Racing NSW stewards have set aside two days to
hear the appeals of jockey Adam Hyeronimus
and his cousin, stablehand Blake Paine, with
the hearing to take place on September 21 and
22. Hyeronimus was disqualified for three years
for betting offences which stewards found were
facilitated by Paine who was banned for two
years and four months.
Trainer and owner guilty over Covid breachesVictorian trainer Dean Boal, who had set up
a temporary NSW stable at Tocumwal, and
owner Kylie Taylor have been disqualified after
breaching Covid-19 protocols put in place by
Racing NSW. Boal, who pleaded guilty, has been
disqualified for two periods of four months for
being party to breaching rules and for giving
false and misleading evidence. His ban will
expire on March 31 next year. Taylor incurred
the same penalty for attending Narrandera
racecourse on July 19 without completing the
mandatory 14 days of quarantine and for giving
false and misleading evidence.
Vale Ray CleaverCranbourne trainer Ray Cleaver has died aged 70
after a suspected stroke on Saturday, almost 15
years to the day after one of his biggest successes
in the 2005 Heatherlie Handicap (Listed, 1700m)
with Honest Politician (Distorted Humor). Cleaver,
who had five horses on his books, prepared Lots Of
Puddles (Danerich) to run fifth at Mornington on
Thursday, in what was his final starter. “It comes as
a bit of a shock really,’’ fellow Cranbourne trainer
Robbie Griffiths, who is also the president of the
Australian Trainers’ Association, told Racing.com
on Sunday morning. “He was a bit of a larrikin –
a loveable rogue around Cranbourne. He had a
small team in recent years but always did well
with his horses. When he first came down to
Cranbourne he had a more sizeable stable with
horses like Honest Politician and Dot Com, but
his team had gotten a bit thinner since then. It’s
certainly a sad day for all of us at Cranbourne to
lose such a respected horseman like Ray.’’
Nowra Cup shifts to DecemberThe Nowra Cup (1600m), previously staged in
May, will now be held in early December after
this year’s meeting was shifted to Goulburn
due to a rain-affected surface. The rescheduled
race is on December 6 and is likely to remain a
permanent switch. “Our club is over the moon
with the news the Nowra Cup race meeting has
been relocated and will now be run in December,”
Shoalhaven City Turf Club chief Paul Weekes
told Racing NSW. “We’re thrilled with the new
date which will provide us with a totally new
branding opportunity for the Cup. The weather
in December is far more conducive to attracting a
decent crowd, despite the challenges that we are
currently experiencing. We’re confident the new
December slot will be much more appealing to
both racing participants and patrons alike.”

Cambridge Stud stallions on showProlific New Zealand nursery Cambridge Stud became the latest farm to
host a virtual parade yesterday, showing off their two stallions Almanzor
(Wootton Bassett) and Embellish (Savabeel). Hosted on Facebook and
Youtube by Cambridge Stud chief executive Henry Plumptre and head of
sales Scott Calder, it was also an opportunity for the Brendan and Jo Lindsay-

transformations. To view the Cambridge Stud parade, click here.
Princess Kereru ready for Foxbridge PlateA brisk workout over 1000 metres between
races at Tauranga on Saturday has quality
sprinter Princess Kereru (Pins) ready
for her first-up assignment in the
Valachi Downs Foxbridge Plate
(Gr 2, 1200m) at Te Rapa this
coming Saturday. The Ken
and Bev Kelso-trained mare
has come on in leaps and
bounds from her fourth place
behind Catalyst (Darci Brahma)
in an open 1100-metre trial at Taupo
earlier in the month with Ken Kelso
[pictured right] pleased with the progress she
has made. “We’ve given her the two exhibition gallops and a trial to get her
ready and she’s pretty forward for the Foxbridge,” he said. “She worked nicely
at Tauranga over the 1000 metres with Sherwood Forest. She was actually
supposed to follow him and Loire but when Loire held them up and wouldn’t
go, we went with Sherwood Forest instead. We’re happy with her and safely
through Te Rapa she will then go to the Tarzino Trophy at Hastings.” Kelso
also advised that star mare Supera (Savabeel) would have a hit-out at the Te
Teko trials next Thursday before starting fresh-up in the Tarzino Trophy (Gr 1,
1400m) on September 19.
Five Princes has more to giveSouth Island trainer Centaine Spittles hopes his promising stayer Five Princes
(Red Giant) can progress from his Riccarton win last Saturday to stakes
company as he continues his rise through the ranks. Five Princes, who arrived
from the North Island last year, took time to mature but he has now won three
of his five starts since returning from a Covid-enforced break. “I’ve always
rated him but he has just taken time to mature both mentally and physically,”
Spittles said. “We have found out that he needs to have one run at them as he
tends to wait for the others if he gets near the front too quickly. He’s getting
older and stronger now and although he has surprised me how well he has
handled the heavier tracks I think he is just as good on better ground. We’re
going to give him one more run in a fortnight then I’ll tip him out for a couple
of weeks. He can have a break before we look at some options during Cup
Week in November. A race like the Metropolitan Trophy would suit and if he
went well in it, we might look at the New Zealand Cup.”

Jericho Cup hopes for JuniorA never-say-die attitude from both horse and
rider saw lightly-raced stayer Junior (Nom Du
Jeu) pick up the biggest win of his career when
he took out the Opal Kiwi Packaging Kiwifruit
Cup (2100m) in the hands of Chelsea Burdan
at Tauranga on Saturday. Co-trainer Shaun
Phelan was quick to praise Burdan who has
been riding in good form of late. “Chelsea
rode him perfectly and I’m not sure whether
any other jockey could have got the win on
him like she did,” he said. “He always hits a
flat spot in his races and this time it was when
they were coming to the home corner but she
never gave up and just kept kicking him along
and he responded really well. You have to ride
him like that and it is a credit to Chelsea that
she got him home.” Phelan believes there is
more in store for Junior and has plans to take
him to the A$300,000 Jericho Cup (4600m) at
Warrnambool later this year. “Our plan has
always been to aim him for the Jericho Cup
qualifying race at New Plymouth next month,”
he said. “He is an out and out stayer and would
eat up another lap in his races.
First NZ winner for champion SA apprenticeMauritian rider Kersley Ramsamy notched
his first winner in New Zealand at Tauranga
on Saturday when he guided Sheza Jakkal
(Jakkalberry) to victory. Ramsamy, who was the
champion apprentice in South Africa’s Eastern
Cape province when he was at the country’s
famed jockey academy, only arrived in New
Zealand in March, shortly before the first
Covid-19 lockdown. “I was riding for one of the
leading stables back home but decided to come
to New Zealand for a little while during the
break that we have in the season back home,”
Ramsamy said. “I started off in the south where
I had a couple of rides but then I contacted
Gavin and made the move up to Te Aroha. I
primarily ride trackwork for Gavin but I’m now
riding more for the other trainers at Te Aroha
which is good as I’m hoping that will help me
to get more raceday rides. When I knew I would
be here for a while due to the Covid-19 situation
I decided I wanted to make a real go of it so the
best way to do that is to ride winners and get
noticed by the trainers.”

Seven for GleneaglesCoolmore Stud’s Gleneagles (Galileo)
registered his first Japanese stakes winner - and
his seventh overall - thanks to the royal blue
colours of Godolphin, with Shock Action (2
c ex Reset In Blue by Fastnet Rock) taking the
Niigata Nisai Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Niigata
yesterday. Sent out as 4.3 second favourite, the
Ryuji Okubo-trained Shock Action raced handy
under Keita Tosaki before stretching clear for a
clear-cut victory by a length and three-quarters.
Favourite Blue Symphony (Screen Hero) made
it a one-two for Godolphin by finishing second,
with Phrase d’Armes (Kizuna) a further half
length away in third, with the trio racing well
clear of their rivals. Purchased from the 2018
December Foal Sale by Paca Paca Farm for
65,000 guineas (approx A$123,700), the two-
year-old - out of Italian Listed winner Reset In
Blue (Fastnet Rock) - has now earned over 38
million yen (approx A$490,000) after two wins
from three starts. Gleneagles stood for €35,000

1400m) last year and second in the Arlington
Cup (Gr 2, 1600m), with this his third win from
12 starts. Heart’s Cry, the sire of four-time Group
1 winner Lys Graceux, stands at Shadai Stallion
Station where his 2020 fee was JPY10,000,000
(approx A$129,000).
Two for Danon BalladeFour-year-old Lord Bless (4 c ex Mysterieuse by
Narita Top Road) stepped up to stakes company
for the first time on Saturday and landed the
BSN Sho (Listed, 1800m) to become the second
stakes winner for his sire Danon Ballade
(Deep Impact). The Yutaka Okumura-trained
colt accounted for Hayabusa Legend (Henny
Hughes) by half a length, withHayayakko (King
Kamehameha) a further neck away in third.
Dannon Ballade started his stud career in
Japan before spending 2017 in Italy and 2018
at Batsford Stud in the UK but he has since
returned to Japan where he stood the 2019 and
2020 season at Big Red Farm for a private fee.
INTERNATIONAL
Deauville romp for Cup hope TelecasterTelecaster (New Approach) added another
French Group race to his tally yesterday on his
way to a possible tilt at the Caulfield Cup (Gr
1, 2400m) and Melbourne Cup. The Hughie
Morrisson-trained colt made all in the Grand
Prix de Deauville (Gr 2, 2500m) and dominated
the field by six and a half lengths. He was
followed home by Soft Light (Authorized) and
Ziyad (Rock Of Gibraltar) who were split by
three-quarters of a length, while fellow Cup
hopeful Red Verdon (Lemon Drop Kid) was a
further two lengths back in fourth. Four-year-
old Telecaster was unraced at two, won the
Dante Stakes (Gr 2, 1m2.5f) last year and this
year ran third to Lord North (Dubawi) in the
Brigadier Gerard (Gr 3, 1m2f) before landing
the La Coupe (Gr 3, 2000m) at Longchamp and
then adding a fourth placing in last month’s
York Stakes (Gr 2, 1m2.5f).

British raider Breathtaking Look lands MeautryBritish raider Breathtaking Look (Bated Breath)
added a second Group 3 success to her Sceptre
Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) victory last year when landing
the Prix de Meautry (Gr 3, 1200m) at Deauville
yesterday for Stuart Williams. Tracking the
leader, she challenged over a furlong from
home and asserted in the final furlong to win
by three and a half lengths from Air De Valse
(Mesnil Des Aigles), while Marieta (Siyouni)
was a further length and a half back in third.
The consistent five-year-old has been knocking
on the door for another Group success this year
with second-placed finishes in three of her five
starts, including the Hungerford Stakes (Gr 2,
7f) two weeks ago, and her record is now six
wins from 16 starts with four placings.
Quincey success for Stunning SpiritStunning Spirit (Invincible Spirit) collected
a third stakes victory and first Group success
when making all and and running out an
unchallenged three-and-a-half-length winner
of the Prix Quincey (Gr 3, 1600m) at Deauville
yesterday. The Frederic Rossi-trained six-year-
old was followed home by We Ride The World
(Orpen), while Le Vertus (Shakespearean) was a
further two lengths back in third. The consistent
entire is the winner of eight of his 29 starts and
has been placed in a further 15.
Supreme victory for Balding’s Happy PowerLast year’s Ganton Stakes (Listed, 1m) winner,
Happy Power (Dark Angel) collected a second
stakes success in the Supreme Stakes (Gr 3, 7f )
yesterday at Goodwood. It was a deserved first
Group win for the Andrew Balding-trained
four-year-old, who beat the 2018 winner of
this race, Anna Nerium (Dubawi), in a Class
2 on his last start at Salisbury. Happy Power
has previously been placed twice in Group
company and ran a good fourth in the Sussex
Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at this track last year so he
is now six wins and five places from 17 starts.
Racing prominently, he joined the leader two
furlongs from home and stuck to the task to
win by a neck from three-year-old Toro Strike
(Toronado) and there was a length back to
Escobar (Famous Name) in third.
34 for LawmanThe Andreas Suborics-trained juvenile
Salonlove (2 f ex Salonblue by Bluebird)
broke her maiden in style yesterday when
taking out the Junioren-Preis (Listed,
1600m) at Dusseldorf and became the 34th
individual stakes winner for her sire Lawman
(Invincible Spirit). Stepping forward from
her debut performance when fourth at
Cologne two weeks ago, Salonlove was
pulled out to challenge with 400 metres
to run and she showed a good turn of foot
to quickly draw a couple of lengths clear
of the fast finishing Milka (Protectionist),
while Demonstration (Areion) stayed on
for third. Former Ballylinch Stud resident
Lawman, sire of Group 1 winners Just The
Judge, Harbour Law, Most Improved and
Marcel, relocated to Haras de Grandcamp in
France last year and his 2020 fee was €10,000
(approx A$16,100).
Seven for Hat TrickDual Listed scorer Win Win Win (4 c ex Miss
Smarty Pants by Smarty Jones) claimed a first
Group 1 success in the Forego Stakes (Gr 1, 7f)
at Saratoga and became the seventh individual
elite-level winner for his late sire Hat Trick
(Sunday Silence). The four-year-old was at the
rear of the field but made progress in the final two
furlongs and stayed on strongly to get up by half a
length at the line. Complexity (Maclean’s Music)
returned second, three-quarters of a length ahead
of True Timber (Mineshaft). The winner of last
year’s Belmont Manila Stakes (Listed, 8f) and
Pasco Stakes (Listed, 7f), Win Win Win was down
the field in the Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f) and
Preakness Stakes (Gr 1, 9.5 f) on his only other
two tries in this grade. Former Gainesway stallion
Hat Trick died last month at the age of 19 at Haras
Springfield in Brazil.
Third Grade 1 for Channel MakerChannel Maker (English Channel) relished the
soft ground at Saratoga yesterday and claimed
his third Grade 1 when taking out the Sword
Dancer Stakes (Gr 1, 12f). The Bill Mott-trained
six-year-old made all under Manny Franco and
recorded a five and three-quarter length victory
over the Michael Maker-trained favourite
Cross Border (English Channel), while fellow
Maker-trained runner Aquaphobia (Giant’s
Causeway) was third. The race was a Breeders'
Cup Challenge race for the Breeders' Cup Turf
(Gr 1, 12f) at Keeneland on November 7, a race
Channel Maker has been unplaced in for the
last two years, but the trainer feels if the ground
came up soft then he could benefit from it.

64 for Uncle MoAshford Stud’s Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie)
notched up two further stakes winners at Saratoga
on Saturday taking his total to 64 individual stakes
winners. The Steven Asmussen-trained Yaupon
(3 c ex Modification by Vindication) took out
the Amsterdam Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) and Graham
Motion’s Bye Bye Melvin (3 c ex Karlovy Vary by
Dynaformer) landed the Saranac Stakes (Gr 3,
8f). Yaupon, unbeaten in two previous starts,
was sent off as favourite and duly obliged by
two lengths over Basin (Liam’s Map), while Bye
Bye Melvin followed up his second in the Jersey
Derby (Listed, 8.5f) last month when getting up
by a head in first time blinkers from the favourite
Don Juan Kitten (Kitten’s Joy). Uncle Mo, whose
progeny are headed by Kentucky Derby (Gr
1, 10f) winner Nyquist, stands at Coolmore’s
Ashford Stud in Kentucky where his 2020 fee was
US$125,000 (approx A$170,000).
Three for Lea The Mark Casse-trained Chart (3 f ex Gauge
by War Front) landed the Ontario Colleen
Stakes (Gr 3, 8f) at Woodbine on Saturday
and became the third stakes winner and first
Group winner for her sire Lea (First Samurai).
She took the honours in a three-way finish with
the favourite Avie's Samurai (First Samurai)
and her stablemate Diamond Sparkles (War
Front) split by a head apiece. The lightly-raced
D J Stables LLC three-year-old takes her record
to three wins from six starts. Donn Handicap
(Gr 1, 9f) winner Lea stands at Claiborne Farm
in Kentucky where his 2020 fee was US$7,500
(approx A$10,200).
Le Don De Vie to target Australian cups
Ozzie Kheir, owner of Saturday's August
Stakes (Listed, 1m3.5f) winner Le Don De Vie
(Leroidesanimaux), has confirmed that the
four-year-old will be heading to Melbourne
in about four weeks for a shot at the Caulfield
and Melbourne Cups. The Hughie Morrison-
trained gelding joins Kehir's other Cup-bound
gallopers Verry Elleegant (Zed) and Finche
(Frankel). He also has Sir Dragonet (Camelot)
bound for the Cox Plate and Tagaloa (Lord
Kanaloa) who could go the same route after the
Caulfield Guineas. “We thought he was about
borderline (for a Caulfield and Melbourne Cup
start) before last night but I think his rating will
go up again,” Kheir, who had Melbourne Cup
runner-up Marmelo (Duke Of Marmalade) in
2018, told Racing.com on Sunday morning.
“We bought him about 12 months ago as
a progressive horse. We bought him in the
hope that he could be a sort of replacement
for Marmelo but he had to qualify and he did
that last start and now after last night, we’re
pretty confident he can get into the Caulfield
and Melbourne Cups.” Le Don De Vie is a $31
chance for the Caulfield Cup and a $34 chance
for the Melbourne Cup with Sportsbet.
Grand Prix de Paris to decide Guillaume port of call
Impressive Prix Hocquart (Gr 2, 2400m) winner
Port Guillaume (Le Havre), who was recently
sold to Hong Kong based Edmund Lee to
continue his long-term career in Australia, will
have his immediate future decided by his next
race in the Grand Prix de Paris (Gr 1, 2400m).
"He will run in the Grand Prix de Paris and then
depending on how he goes, he will either revert
to the Caulfield Cup or, if he happened to win
impressively, he'd probably give it a whirl in the
Arc," said bloodstock agent Alistair Donald to
the Racing Post, who brokered his switch to Lee.
“We've always bought a few horses for Edmund
Lee to run in Australia, including Harlem and
Spillway – both Group 1 winners for him – as
well as Redkirk Warrior, who went via Hong
Kong. We very much liked his profile and think
he will be a top-class horse in Australia."

Figures for foals, yearlings and two-year-olds broken down by year

BY MICHAEL LEE | SPG TURF CLUB
Rising star Inferno (Holy Roman
Emperor) gave another glimpse
of his bombproof qualities after
he scored a thumping win in the
S$250,000 Singapore Classic (Gr 2, 1400m) on
Sunday, probably one of his most impressive to
date.
From the way the even-money favourite
effortlessly strolled to the line at the expense
of some very smart just-turned four-year-olds,
the Singapore Guineas (Local Gr 1, 1600m) on
September 26 looks his for the taking.
The Classic and Guineas are the slightly
altered versions of the remaining (the first leg,
the Sprint, was annulled) second and third
legs of a special Singapore Three-Year-Old
Challenge this year due to Covid-19. Though
the vast majority of contenders have turned
four, they have been made eligible for the series
this year.
With all of Inferno’s previous six starts
(for five wins) restricted to 1200 metres, some
questioned whether last year’s undisputed
juvenile champion would be as lethal beyond
that sprinting trip.
But from the way he came jogging around
the field to present fresh while his 11 rivals
were all under the pump, those doubts quickly
proved unfounded.
Inferno never spent a penny throughout
the race, with champion jockey Vlad Duric
smartly leaving him out of the early speed battle
upfront, smothered away in midfield.
And that was the key to the son of Holy
Roman Emperor (Danehill) eventually toying
with the opposition with such consummate
ease inside the last 400 metres. While he was
coasting in neutral gear, many of his opponents
were either flat out or just could not match the
big engine of his.
Viewed by many as Inferno’s main rival,
Mr Malek (Swiss Ace) had to burn plenty of
petrol to cross to the front, with Sweet Angeline
(Rubick) kicking up on the fence to hold him
out.
Rocket Star (Star Witness), another possible
nemesis, was also ahead of Inferno in running,
but was already being cajoled along at the half-
mile mark.
Turning for home, Mr Malek had little
trouble sweeping past the weakening Sweet
Angeline (later found to have returned with
respiratory issues), but Strong N Powerful
(Golden Archer) proved harder to shake off.
And then descended a devastating turn of
foot. Although under a chokehold from Duric,
Inferno pulled his way into a striking position at
the 400 metres.
Once the handbrakes were off, Inferno shot
to the front like the others were tacked to the
ground. Duric only pulled the whip once they
had shot clear by two lengths, just giving a few
taps to keep his mind on the job.
Running a sizzling 22.68secs split inside
the last 400 metres, Inferno went on to score
easing down by a length and three-quarters
from Strong N Powerful with Mr Malek bravely
hanging on for third place another three-
quarters of a length away. The winning time
was 1min 21.77secs for the 1400 metres on the
Short Course.
Trainer Cliff Brown, who was among those
who raised some concerns over Inferno’s
stamina, was certainly more confident heading
towards the Singapore Guineas now.
“That was such an exciting win. He travelled
beautifully throughout and that was a ten-out-
of-ten ride from Vlad,” said the Australian
handler.
“I just told him not to move before the
home turn, and things worked out perfectly.
“The Guineas is the plan for him next. I
won’t change a thing in his training, this horse
is getting better and better.
“That was probably his best win so far, and
it’s all thanks to Chris Bock (racing manager)
who bought him. You know, a lot goes into it,
and Chris is such a great judge of young horses.
“He can spend $20,000 on a horse who will
become very good, just like he can do it for an
$150,000 horse. It’s remarkable.
“I can’t do that. My attention span is too
low!”

Inferno wins Singapore Classic in a canter
Inferno MACAU JOCKEY CLUB

Duric for one was focused on only one
mantra when he was given the leg-up on a
horse he rode only for the first time at his last
start when he returned a commanding winner
first-up in a Class 3 race over 1200 metres on
August 8.
“I just wanted him to get cover and switch
off,” said Duric.
“I wasn’t really worried by the 1400 metres.
He was fresh first-up and I was more worried he
would overrace again today.
“I just wanted him to settle as it was his
first time over 1400 metres, and he did, he was
relaxed the whole way through. He is going
towards the mile now.
“Credit to Cliff, Chris and Tony (Lane).
They’ve done a wonderful job with this horse.
“And how not to mention Michael Rodd
(Inferno’s previous partner). He texted me
straight after the win, this is a special horse to
him.”
Duric was incidentally giving himself a nice
breather after Brazilian jockey Ruan Maia ate
into his massive 19-win lead thanks to a nine-
win haul, including a seven-timer. The three-
time Singapore champion jockey replied in the
best possible way with a four-timer on Sunday,
having earlier saluted aboard two other Brown
horses Miraaj (Your Song) and Solar Eclipse
(Not For Sale), and Hwasong (Declaration of
War) for Stephen Gray.
With Maia returning home empty handed,
Duric has put some space back - nine winners
- on 43 winners.
Brown equalled Duric’s prolific day with
his own quartet of winners when Gold Star
(Redent) came from last to score a thriller in
the next race after the Classic, the S$70,000 Big
Maverick 2008 Stakes Class 3 race over 1400
metres
“Gold Star thoroughly deserved that win.
He tries his heart out all the time,” said Brown.
“It’s been a great day for us.”
Inferno’s stellar record now reads as follows:
six wins, one second for stakes earnings around
the S$480,000 mark for the Barree Stable.
Four years ago, Glenn Whittenbury and his
Victorian associates won the same race with the
great Debt Collector (Thorn Park) on his way to
a clean sweep of the Singapore Three-Year-Old
Challenge.
From his first couple of runs, Inferno was
already touted by some fans as the heir apparent
to Debt Collector. Many took it with a pinch of
salt then, especially the always cautious Brown,
but after that latest galloping lesson, the passing
of the baton should not be far off.
