PATNA, Aug 11:
Apparently rebuked by theJD(U) leadership, BiharAgriculture Minister NarendraSingh today said he "regretted"his remarks giving clean chit toPakistan for the killing of fiveIndian soldiers on LoC.
However, at the same time,he accused the media of twistinghis comments out of context.
"I regret my remarks givingclean chit to Pakistan for thekilling of five Indian soldiers onthe LoC in Jammu and Kashmiron Tuesday last," Singh toldmedia at a hurriedly-convenedpress conference at his officialresidence.
"I am sorry if my remarkshave hurt the sentiments of anyindividual," he said categorical-ly, but again shifted the blameon media for "twisting" hisremarks out of context.
Singh also candidly admittedthat he was ill-informed thatIndian soldiers were killed bymilitants to create a wedge
between the two neighbours, buthe has now come to know it wasthe handiwork of the PakistaniArmy for which the Indian gov-ernment should take the sternestpossible action againstIslamabad.
He admitted that he has beenissued a show cause notice bythe JD(U) national presidentSharad Yadav and said he willreply soon.
On being told that hisremarks have caused hugeembarrassment to ChiefMinister Nitish Kumar on top ofan insensitive comments for thearmed forces by his ministerialcolleague, Singh said: "I havealready regretted my remarks....
"If the Chief Minister seeksmy resignation, I will be readyto hand over the letter at anytime."
He, however, defended hisremarks describing Pakistan as ayounger brother and a neighbourand said it was outcome of hissocialist ideology and a visionthat India should have good rela-
tions with all its neighbours. Describing himself as a
patriotic citizen, Singh con-firmed he will happily give thelast drop of his blood in the serv-ice of the nation.
He demanded a nationalpolicy for compensation andrelated benefits to the kin ofmartyrs and said that a mini-mum Rs. 50 lakh as compensa-tion, besides job, houses andstudies of the children of thosesoldiers laying down their livesfor the country should beensured and taken care of thegovernment.
On asked about the reasonfor defending his ministerialcolleague Bhim Singh for hisinsensitive remarks that thepolicemen and soldiers arerecruited to lay down theirlives for the country, he saidthe minister concerned hasalready apologised and thematter is closed.
The Agriculture Minister hadearlier been quoted as givingclean chit to Pakistan for killingof five Indian soldiers in Jammuand Kashmir and termed it ashandiwork of militants in dis-guise of the Pakistani troops anddescribed Islamabad as ayounger brother and a goodneighbour.
An embarrassed NitishKumar had regretted his cabinetcolleague's remark even as theJD(U) national president issuedshow cause notices to the two.(PTI)
