– Use vocabulary strategies for determining the meaning of unknown words within a reading passage

• Reading fiction:– Identify and define elements of fiction

literature:• Character, plot, setting, theme, and

tone

– Identify and define elements of poetry:• Rhyme/rhythm, figurative language

– Identify and define elements of drama:• Acts, scenes, dialogue, stage

directions, characters, plot, setting, theme, and tone

– Read fiction for fun

• Reading non-fiction:– Identify main idea and supporting

details in a reading passage– Analyze and interpret information

from various documents– Distinguish between fact and

opinion in a reading passage

• Writing Skills:– Compose 3-paragraph essays for

different topics and purposes (narrative, descriptive, persuasive, cause/effect, comparison/contrast)

– Incorporate transitional words and phrases in essay
