Reading The Explorer What you are going to read: A dozen leaves were in the shape of a sleeping mat. They had been eaten (devoured) by ants. A roof had been made by plaited palm leaves that were put between two trees. Fred crawled further in checking for snakes. The ground made a soft sucking sound (squelched) in the corner there was a hollow fruit which was for drinking water (gourd) and it was rotten with mould (Mildew). Fred touched it and it was soft (mulchy). He turned it upside down and rapidly (cascade) flints spilt out. These splints were arrowheads! Fred got the others to show them. Con wouldn’t come in and tried to walk off. She didn’t want to enter someone’s home without permission (trespassing). I know what will happen I have read goldilocks. Laila talks about her mum grew up in the jungle and she is someone who is an expert on plants (botanist). Con snapped at Max about the way he said the word. Laila carried on talking she explained how they were going to meet their grandma before she died. She wanted to see what max was like. Con snorted and again was unpleasant. Just come in and see that no one has been here for ages. They all came in, Fred started talking about how they could make this place better and start repairing it. Laila picked up leaves and started making beds. I’m not sleeping here said Con. The person hasn’t been here for ages there is moss and mould on everything, and Laila said in a strong voice that maybe they might never come back. What are the countries and capital cities of South America?

The mainland of South America is made up of 12 different countries plus 1 separate territory. A territory is an area of land or a country that is ruled or governed by another country. French Guiana is ruled by France. In addition to the countries on the mainland, South America also contains the Falkland Islands. These islands are also a territory and are ruled by the United Kingdom. The 13 countries of mainland South America are: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Ecuador, French Guiana (France) Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Brazil is by far the largest country in South America. It covers around half the continent and is also home to around half of the total population. French Guiana is officially the smallest country on the mainland, but Suriname is the smallest independent country.

What do we know about the people of South America?

The people of South America have many different origins. Over hundreds over years, settlers from the continents of Europe, Africa and Asia have moved to live alongside the Native Americans who have lived there for thousands of years. The descendants of the very first Native Americans mostly live in the more mountainous countries — Columbia, Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru.

We know that the physical geography of South America is very varied. The areas of rainforest, mountains and deserts are difficult for people to live within, but some do live there; in small villages where the land is mostly used for farming. In contrast, most people live in the very large cities near to the coasts. The physical geography of South America means that in some places the population is high and crowded together whereas in others, the population is low and spread out.

Across South America, most people speak the Latin-based languages Spanish and Portuguese which were brought by the European invaders. However, many people also speak a range of Native American languages. Some of these languages are more common than others and some are recognised as official languages but others are not. Religion, in comparison, is not particularly varied. Most people are a type of Christian known as Roman Catholic but there are other religions found across South America. You may have heard of some of them before but many South Americans also worship traditional Native American or African gods and spirits.
