Monash University young,
dynamic and ambitious
Monash University was establishedin Melbourne, Australia in 1958. Weare named after Sir John Monash,a famous Australian who contributedto almost every level of Australian life.
Sir John had a simple philosophy:...equip yourself for life, not merelyfor your own benefit, but for thebenefit of the whole community.
This philosophy guideseverything we do:
_ our approach to education_ our research ambitions_ our people_ our communities and_ our global initiatives.
In little more than 50 years MonashUniversity has earned an enviablenational and international reputationfor research and teaching excellence.
Taking inspiration from Sir John Monash,
we have created a world-class educationand research community, a communityof progress, optimism and ambition.
A community where brilliant students, researchers, ideas and solutions tosome of the worlds great challengesare nurtured and thrive.
Monash University is a memberof Australias Group of Eight, analliance of elite Australian universitiesrecognised for their excellence inteaching and research. Its eightmembers produce more than 70 percent of all basic research conductedat all of Australias public universities.
Its a testament to our researchfocus and ambition that we are
the youngest member of thisprestigious group, which includessome of Australias longest-established universities.
The M8 Alliance of Academic HealthCenters and Medical Universitiesis an international collaboration ofacademic institutions of educationaland research excellence. The M8
Alliance acts as a permanent platformfor framing future considerations ofglobal medical developments andhealth challenges.

With campuses and centres acrossfour continents, Monash is able tooffer exceptional global opportunitiesto staff and students alike.
Sir John Monash
The University takes its name
from Sir John Monash, a famous
Australian who contributed to
almost every level of Australian life.
Not only do we carry Sir Johns
name, we also take inspiration
from his philosophy on life.
He was a man who used education
to turn his natural talent into ability,
allowing him to realise his daring
ambitions. Our motto,Ancora Imparo
(I am still learning), captures the
essence of his approach to life.

Making a big impact
We pursue a research agenda basedon excellence, relevance and impact.
Since our foundation, we haveembraced an unrelenting commitmentto excellence we back this by offeringour community (from our newestresearchers to our longest-establishedcross-disciplinary teams) accessto world-class facilities, resources andsupport. As a result, our researchershave made discoveries that havehad a significant impact in Australia
and around the globe, achievingthings that the world once didntthink were possible.
In 1964, work by Monash researchersled to the worlds first laws requiringthat seatbelts be installed in all newcars. This started in Victoria and South
Australia and soon spread overseas.
We pioneered IVF research, achievingthe worlds first IVF pregnancy in theearly 1970s.
Our scientists were the first in the worldto demonstrate that human embryonicstem cells could generate specific typesof body cells in the laboratory.
One of our most outstandingcommercialised inventions is theanti-influenza drug Zanamivir (soldas Relenza). This first-in-class antiviraldrug developed for the treatment andprevention of influenza paved the way
for todays generation of flu vaccines.
With an eye on the future, we makesignificant strategic investments inworld-class research infrastructure.
We are increasing our capacity toconnect with industry, governmentand the worlds very bestresearch organisations.

Bringing brilliant to the world
Our engineers have forged aninternational reputation for researchthat provides innovative solutionsto global problems.
The Monash Vision Group, acollaboration with Alfred Health,MiniFAB and Grey Innovation, isdeveloping a direct-to-brain bioniceye that could restore sight to85 per cent of the clinically blind.
Our scientists have revolutionised the
design of fuel cells used in the latestgeneration of hybrid cars, using a

A deeper learning experience
Monash understands that deep student
learning is about much more thancontent. We know the key to successfullearning and teaching is the qualityof the interaction between the student, their peers and their teachers.
Our approach to education creates andencourages a personalised learningexperience we let our students choosetheir own path. They choose the typesof skills they want to develop, when andin what areas they want to specialise, and what sort of experiences theywant to have.
It also encourages active collaboration.Students engage with their teachers
and with one another, constructing, rather than consuming, knowledge.
This provides a more satisfyingexperience for students, and a morerewarding outcome for employers, who recruit graduates with a profoundunderstanding of a field or discipline.

Learning from experience
Pharmacy student Jane OConnortravelled to the Solomon Islands toexperience the challenges of practisingpharmacy in a developing country.
During her three-month trip madepossible by a travel scholarship Jane worked in the National Referral
Hospital and made recommendationsfor improving the supply of medicationsto remote clinics.
It was amazing to compare whatI knew of an Australian hospital andwhat they manage to make do within the Solomons, Jane says.
There is a ward round done each day,but the hospital is so overloaded thatthis brief encounter may be the patientsonly interaction with professional healthcare for the day. It was especiallyconfronting for me as malaria, tuberculosis and malnutrition were allpresent in the most severe degrees.
Combining degrees
Monash has more students doingdouble degrees than any other
Australian university. By pursuingdouble degees, students are able toexplore two distinct areas of interestand broaden their horizons. Theyrealso able to broaden their employmentprospects a double degreedemonstrates a students versatilityand ability to consider problemsfrom multiple perspectives.
