MONAGHAN PPN News 5 th February 2016 Welcome everybody to the 1 st February edition of Monaghan Public Participation Network e-bulletin. We would firstly like to extend a big welcome to Clones Famine Committee who have joined us recently. We look forward to meeting with you in the near future. February is looking like a very busy month for the community sector with lots of community events happening county wide. There are also opportunities for funding and training programmes so if you are interested in any of them contact the relevant person or myself and I would be happy to lead you in the right direction. Welcome everybody to the 1st February edition of Monaghan Public Participation Network e-bulletin.

We would firstly like to extend a big welcome to Clones Famine Committee who have joined us recently. We look forward to meeting with you in the near future.

February is looking like a very busy month for the community sector with lots of community events happening county wide. There are also opportunities for funding and training programmes so if you are interested in any of them contact the relevant person or myself and I would be happy to lead you in the right direction.

Thank you to all of you who sent in your news to us, it is always good to hear from you all. Remember, the purpose of producing this e-bulletin on a fortnightly basis is to facilitate the flow of information to you all on issues relevant to the community and voluntary sector. Local Diaspora Engagement FundApplications for Funding 2016

Applications are now being invited for funding for local diaspora engagement projects and initiatives under the Local Diaspora Engagement Fund from local and community groups and organisations based in Ireland. Purpose of fundingThe purpose of the funding is to promote diaspora engagement at a county, local and community level. This is in line with the objectives of Global Irish: Ireland’s Diaspora Policy which was published in March, 2015 and acknowledges the importance of a sense of place to the members of the Irish diaspora and the potential for communities and counties in Ireland to reach out to their own diaspora and build relationships for mutual benefit. The aim is to provide support to local and community projects and initiatives that are focused on developing strong diaspora links within the community. A copy of the policy is available at https://www.dfa.ie/news-and-media/publications/publicationarchive/2015/february/global-irish/Priority will be given to projects which fall under the following categories:

In order to qualify for consideration, applicants will have to confirm compliance with the conditions of the scheme as to funding and timescale for delivery. The evaluation criteria will include:

the quality and relevance of the proposal; the likely impact of the project relative to the size of the grant

sought; the nature of the activities planned.

Budget and grants available:There is a total of €350,000 available under this grant scheme. The maximum amount of an individual grant to be awarded to a project is €20,000 and no more than 75% of the overall cost of any project will be funded.

Heritage Management Grant SchemeDeadline: 5.00pm, Monday 29th February 2016.

 The Heritage Council intends to allocate the sum of €700,000 to its Heritage Management Grant 

Scheme in 2016. 

The objective of this scheme is to support projects that apply good heritage practice to the management of places, collections or objects (including buildings).

  

The online grants system will NOT be open for applications until Monday 8th

February, in the meantime, to assist you in preparing your application, a copy of all the questions you will be required to answer are provided at the following website

Monaghan Sports Partnership Community Coaching Programme – starts 1st March!  Monaghan Sports Partnership, in conjunction with Cavan / Monaghan ETB and Teach na nDaoine FRC is coordinating a part-time Community Sports Coaching Course for people

who are unemployed.   If you know someone aged 18+ who would like an opportunity to avail of a range of sports coaching qualifications along with QQI level  3 certificate in personal development and computer skills, then let them know about this course starting beginning of and encourage them to come along to our information evening at Teach na nDaoine on Wednesday 10th February (2.00pm – 5.00pm) to find out more about it.  This course is FREE of charge, will run (part-time) for 14 weeks on 3 days per week (Tues, Wed, Thurs)  and is funded through the Dormant Accounts Fund, supported by Sport Ireland.   See major advert published on the front page of the sports section of the Northern Standard for further information.   We would appreciate your help in promoting this course so feel free to share our advert on our facebook page through your own social media contact groups or individuals or use the attached  flier to  send by email.  For any other information, please contact us at the Sports Partnership office at 042-9755126

The Council is working on a global application for submission to the SEAI’s Better Energy Community Fund, which is expected to open early in the New Year. In preparation, we are inviting community groups to come forward and have a FREE energy audit done of your building, with no obligation. If you want to carry out some of the work the audit identifies, you can then choose to be part of our grant application to SEAI for 2016.

So, we’re now inviting communities who wish to have an energy audit carried out on premises they own to come forward. Premises include community centres, community-owned businesses, community owned residential accommodation...... if you have an idea, contact Carol Lambe on [email protected].

Your community is also free to develop up its own scheme and apply for funding in its own right. See article on ‘Better Energy Communities Scheme’ down in the ‘Sustainability Matters’ section of this newsletter.

NEW LOCAL BUS ROUTES IN MONAGHAN TOWN

The Transport Co-Ordination Unit (TCU) which looks after rural transport in Co Monaghan has introduced a local bus service around Monaghan town. There is a small fare for using the service – but when you count in the pay parking charge, it’s well worth using. If you’re over 65 with a free bus travel pass, you and your companion may use this service for free. You can get more information on www.cmtcu.ie

The Organising Committee of the St Patrick’s Day Parade are holding a planning meeting at 6.00 pm on Wednesday 3rd February, 2016  in the Market House, Monaghan Town. DIGITAL TRAINING PROGRAMME Carrickmacross Library are hoping to get a 1-2-1 Digital Training Programme up and running next month. This involves Volunteers giving 2 hours a week for 4 weeks to help tutor others how to use their Smartphones, Tablets or Laptops. Training will be offered to the volunteers and course notes provided before they are paired with a learner. Tutoring sessions will take place in the Library on Wednesday evenings.

Coillte has informed Monaghan County Council that the entire property at Dartrey Forest will be thinned over the next 6 months or so.  The work will be completed in blocks, starting at the Rockcorry end and finishing at the Cootehill end. Coillte is asking members of the public to please take heed of warning signage and not to enter areas where harvesting is taking place.

The next meeting of Tydavnet Historical Society will be on Monday 22nd Feb at 8pm, in Ballinode Church Hall. Please note change of date. Noted historian Jack Johnston from Clogher will deliver the talk, and it is hoped to have a very interesting social history, lore and legend of Slacksgrove (Hollywood, Scotstown) and the Fiddes family of Clonamully. Jack has been involved in teaching, writing and publishing local history for 40 years and has worked over much of Ulster and North Connacht. He is currently President of the annual William Carleton Summer School. All welcome.

KEEP FREE Monaghan County Council will be hosting a National Tidy Towns conference on Saturday 9th April 2016 in 4 Seasons Hotel, Monaghan.  The focus of the conference will be on Sustainable Waste & Resource Management.   More detail in the next issue – for now, just put the date in your diary. SENIORS ALERT SCHEMEThere have been changes recently to how you apply for assistance under the Seniors Alert Scheme. This is the scheme which supplies things like personal alarms to vulnerable older people. The Scheme has moved to Pobal, and local groups who are interested in rolling out the scheme in their locality have to re-apply to be placed on the list of groups a person may contact if they wish to avail of the Scheme.

The Co Monaghan groups currently registered (and the person to contact if you wish to apply to the scheme for a personal alarm for someone) are:
