We’re on a mission to fight kidney disease and we’re thrilled to report that we’re gaining momentum on all fronts. In 2014, we focused our efforts on initiatives to combat kidney disease across our three key pillars of Awareness, Prevention, and Treatment.

AWARENESSKidney disease is growing at an alarming rate in the United States. There are 73 million Americans at risk for developing kidney disease. The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) is determined to reach those at risk before it’s too late. In order to accomplish this, we continued to grow our existing community-based programs while hosting the first-ever Kidney Patient Summit in Washington, D.C., which brought together numerous kidney organizations, kidney patients, and family members to ensure kidney disease is a political priority. In 2014, our Kidney Walk program expanded to new cities, allowing more walkers and teams than ever before to step up in the fight against kidney disease.

PREVENTIONOver 26 million American adults are currently living with kidney disease — most of whom don’t know it. We broadened our signature, community-based kidney disease early detection program, KEEP Healthy, bringing it to new communities. Through this program, we’re educating Americans about the earliest signs of kidney disease in order to slow or stop its progression to kidney failure. We also launched a ground-breaking interactive web portal and mobile app, My Food Coach, to help with healthy menu planning. This tool integrates more than 25 medically-backed nutritional guidelines in order to provide customized dietary recommendations based on individual nutritional needs. Diet management is critical for those who have kidney disease, and can be key to preventing or slowing the progression of chronic kidney disease.

TREATMENTFrom research to Capitol Hill, ensuring that kidney patients receive the best possible treatment remained an utmost priority this past year. Through our Young Investigators Forum, we sponsored presentations by researchers who are working to develop innovative ways to treat kidney disease, from preventing kidney transplant rejection to engineering artificial kidneys. With our Spring Clinical Meetings and year-round continuing education, we also provided healthcare professionals with cutting-edge treatment information so that they were equipped to give their patients the best kidney care. As the voice of patients and families in Washington D.C., we advocated for more research funding, better coverage of immunosuppressive drugs for kidney transplants, and new policies to protect against health insurance discrimination for living kidney donors. We are also proud to share that the number of people starting dialysis has decreased for the first time in 35 years and patients who are on dialysis are now living longer.

Thanks to your generous support, we are helping more kidney patients than ever before and our programmatic impact has never been stronger. From all of us at the National Kidney Foundation, thank you for your dedication to the kidney community and for making these accomplishments possible. We are so excited to keep the momentum going and look forward to expanding on our successes in 2015.

26 million Americans have kidney disease, and most don’t know it.

The incidence of kidney disease is on the rise, but so is our response to it. We are meeting this challenge by increasing public awareness, supporting patients and families, educating professionals, and speaking out in government.

NKF’S VOICE IN GOVERNMENTAdvocating for kidney patients, donors, and their respective families.

INVESTING IN RESEARCHDriven by research, chronic kidney disease (CKD) treatment and care is constantly improving. People are now living for decades, often full lifetimes, with CKD. NKF’s research grant program invests in scientific investigation to improve CKD treatment.

we teach BETTER TREATMENT THROUGH PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION Each year, we host the renowned NKF Spring Clinical Meetings, a “college” for nephrologists, nurses, technicians, advanced practitioners, pharmacists, renal dietitians, and nephrology social workers.

PATIENT EDUCATION MATERIALSNKF brochures, booklets, and fact sheets are information-rich, reader-friendly, and constantly updated to provide patients with the latest practical information on kidney disease.

YOUR KIDNEYS AND YOU Educational events brought to the work place make it possible for employees and organization members to meet experts from the field of kidney disease.

VOICES FROM THE HEART

Transforming CareSaving Lives

Jessica Foung (right) with fellow kidney patient, Leah Kaufman

When one lives with a chronic illness and kidney disease, it is easy to feel powerless. But with the support of the National Kidney Foundation, I found a voice; I found support; and I found a way to be involved and empowered in the fight against kidney disease.

Transforming CareSaving Lives

After a number of years my hus-band, Jim, progressed from stage 3 to stage 5, and needed a kidney transplant or dialysis. We were over-whelmed when 10 people stepped forward to be tested as a match. Our son, Chris, was the closest match and he donated a kidney to his dad on May 23, 2008. As I met more and more people with CKD who had no kidney donors — I knew I had to act. I volunteer because I am passionate about education, identifying risk factors, and early evaluation.

NKF Volunteer

When Parker was two months old, he was diagnosed with a rare genetic kidney disorder called Congenital Nephrotic Syndrome. Most children who have this disease will die by the age of five. When he was two, he received a kidney transplant from his father. Parker, now 14, is doing well, but his fight will never be over. Supporting NKF with their research and programs is our way of giving back.

My involvement with NKF was born out of necessity and has thrived because of the tremendously important work they do in our community. As a dialysis patient for 17 years, and now as a transplant recipient, I have seen just about every aspect of kidney disease. We need NKF to drive its message of Awareness, Prevention, and Treatment.

Supporter and Greater Cincinnati Board Member.

The Sarris Family has been affected by kidney disease for many years.

We have diabetes within our family health history, so we are certainly at risk. Many of our family members have lost kidneys, were on dialysis, and have received kidney transplants. We know the importance of the awareness, prevention, and treatment of kidney disease, and support the National Kidney Foundation in hopes of finding a cure for this debilitating disease.

When I had my transplant, the National Kidney Foundation was there as a resource and support system for me. I’m involved with NKF to help prevent kidney disease, promote awareness, and make sure more people can live a long and healthy life without kidney disease.

I truly believe we can make more people aware of kidney disease, we can help to prevent it — and in the long run, help to save families and lives. As a NKF board member and someone who donated a kidney to his wife, I have had a chance to spread the word throughout the North Texas community. While my role is small, I’m committed to making a difference every day, every week, and with every program we do.

North Texas Board Member

Being involved in the NKF has highlighted the importance of the organization’s fundraising function, given me an active role in fighting the epidemic of kidney failure, and brought new friends into my life. Having had loved ones affected by this disease taught me the importance of early detection and the value of good medical care. I am proud to be a part of NKF.

I was a recipient of the NKF fellowship back in the early 1980s when I was in training. Giving back to an organization that helped me in the past felt only natural. My commitments to the NKF support their public and professional educational programs like KEEP Healthy, and patient support advocacy.
