Scaling IronicallyA Guide to Enlarging Products

5 week research project

Page 7: Molly Landry_Portfolio

“The tendency to assume that a system that works at one scale also works at a larger or smaller scale.”

Load Assumption: The assumption that working stresses will scale along with the original scale factor.

Ex) gravity, pressure, heat exchange

Interaction Assumption: The assumption that the way people and other systems interact with the design will be the same at other levels of scale

Trash Can or Recycle Bin?We realized we needed to emphasize the differences between the two products

while keeping the design intuitive, convenient, and engaging.

What did we Learn? The material we used, cardboard, did not hold up to the environmental stresses the ves-sel was subject to. The collection bin became soggy and the outside of the vessel soaked

up spills staining the surface.

Page 23: Molly Landry_Portfolio

What did we Learn? The refurbished bin was more durable but had been placed in a remote location. Because this location was removed from the activity and food vendors it was not fully utilized and collected

little recycling. Location is just as important as the bin itself.

Page 24: Molly Landry_Portfolio

Festival International Prototype Test Building from what we learned during Festivals Acadiens and Blackpot Festival we de-

signed and built a new recycling vessel to test during Festival International.

Hero Jacket for Audit of a Demon HunterUndergraduate Thesis

1Semester

Page 28: Molly Landry_Portfolio

The Audit of a Demon HunterLiam, our half demon hero, secretly works with the FBI to eradicate the scourge of demonic beings in

California, for a fee of course. His normal routine becomes complicated when a personal IRS audit turns into a plot to end the earthly world.

Page 29: Molly Landry_Portfolio

From the Script to the Dressing RoomCostuming Liam was a collaborative project with Ron Hardy, a producer, and Alan Lefebvre, a scriptwriter and director of photography. Using Alan’s script, Audit of a Demon Hunter, and our shared vision of the film I designed and fabricated Liam’s demon hunting jacket. This high-tech leather jacket reflects Liam’s personality and is specifically designed to aid him in his dangerous occupation.
