Value Statement

Spectra Analysis Instruments, Inc., a leading provider of auto-mated FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared) detection products, presentsthe DiscovIR-LC®, a ‘breakthrough’ (solvent removing) FTIR detectortechnology, providing solid-phase analysis of HPLC (High PerformanceLiquid Chromatography) and SEC (Size Exclusion Chromatography)separations.

According to Spectra’s Co-Founder and Senior Vice President ofEngineering, William W. Carson, the company recognized the significantlimitations of currently available technology and developed the firstfully-automated high performance HPLC-FTIR detection system ca-pable of achieving the kind of rigorous, repeatable qualitative analysesthat pharmaceutical, polymer chemists and other-industry customersrequire.

By providing an on-line chemistry solution...DiscovIR increases pro-ductivity of a company's most valuable resource - its scientists, chemists and engineers involved in:

• Product development• Process control and troubleshooting• Quality control (incoming and outgoing)• Patent protection and competitive analysis

The company’s DiscovIR products employ FTIR detection, theanalytical method of choice for providing identification and qualitativeinformation of organic compounds in complex chemical mixturesacross multiple market applications.

The DiscovIR®, is a powerful analytical tool for the identification of compounds in

complex chemical mixtures and materials analysis. When connected to the outlet of aGC, HPLC or GPC (separation systems), the DiscovIR automatically captures and depos-its each compound in the mixture as a continuous track on an infrared transparentsubstrate. The built-in interferometer simultaneously captures a set of time-orientedinfrared spectra from the deposited track. The result is chemical identification andmolecular composition of all compounds.

Applications

With the DiscovIR-GC® forensic analytical chemists can now perform fast and accu-rate analysis of controlled substances that are routinely secured by law enforcementpersonnel. The DiscovIR utilizes the high specificity of Infrared Spectroscopy (IR) toreduce uncertainty in the identification of isomers. Coupled directly to a gas chro-matograph allows for fast and accurate identification of drugs such as oxycodone,

MDMA, pseudo-ephedrine, cannabinoids, cocaine and methamphetamines.

Polymers are defined by the characteristics of their constituent monomer(s) and theirmicrostructural arrangement. Infrared Spectroscopy coupled with Gel PermeationChromatography (GPC) or Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC) is well suited todetermine the compositional and structural arrangement of polymers. The DiscovIR isadept at performing a wide range of applications such as formulation, deformulationof polymer blends, compositional drift/variation across the Molecular Weight (MW)distribution and process upsets.

Formulation is a major component in the efficacy, delivery and stability of a drug.Polymeric excipients such as copovidone (PVP/VA64) can serve various functionswhen added to the active pharmaceutical ingredient such as matrix former, bindingagent or sustained release agent. The hyphenated GPC-FTIR provides valuable insightinto the physical properties of polymeric excipients to insure incoming quality of rawmaterial, defining a safe process window and monitoring for shelf life degradation dueto process variations.
