Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society

Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society is the largest honor society in American higher education. Its mission is to recognize and encourage scholarship among two-year college students by providing opportunities for development of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate for an exchange of ideas and ideals, for lively fellowship of scholars, and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence. Membership in Phi Theta Kappa is offered to students with an overall GPA of 3.5 or higher. Graduates who are members of the MVCC chapter of Phi Theta Kappa [Lambda Beta] may be identified by a gold stole with royal blue Greek letters as part of their regalia.

SPIRE National Honor Society

SPIRE is a national honor society dedicated to recognizing adult learners and non-traditional students enrolled in two-year academic institutions. Its purpose is to respect and appreciate the unique achievements of these students as they are highly engaged and motivated to succeed in all aspects of their lives. Membership in SPIRE is offered to students who have a minimum GPA of 3.0, are involved in at least three campus or community activities, are within 12 months of graduation, and have demonstrated leadership, persistence, and future promise. Graduates who are members of SPIRE are recognized by wearing a royal blue stole as part of their commencement regalia.

Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program

The Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) is a New York State grant-funded initiative designed to foster academic excellence for historically underrepresented and economically disadvantaged college students. To encourage excellence, CSTEP cultivates student independence and enhances the experience of participants through various academic enrichment programs, events, and activities. CSTEP students are pursuing professional careers in the sciences, technologies, engineering, mathematics, and licensed professions. Graduates that have completed their CSTEP requirements are recognized by wearing a royal blue stole with white trim.

SUNY Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence

SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor George J. SearlesThroughout his 45-year career at MVCC, Dr. George Searles has been a highly respected Professor in the School of Humanities. An outstanding teacher, active scholar, and published poet, he has positively influenced hundreds of students’ lives and careers. Professor Searles has served extensively in campus governance and is recognized for fostering mentorships with students and colleagues. Professor Searles is also a past recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities, and the Carnegie Foundation’s New York State Teacher of the Year Award. While maintaining an impressive scholarly and publishing career, Professor Searles’ deepest commitments remain in the area of classroom teaching and service to the community. Professor Searles exemplifies the passion, excellence, and service leadership required of SUNY’s highest academic rank, that of SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor.

Excellence in Adjunct Teaching: Mark RussellDr. Mark Russell is a highly respected adjunct instructor who has taught human services, psychology, and chemical dependency courses since 2017. Mark is a strong proponent of active learning and engages his students in extracurricular activities that build their understanding of concepts learned in class. He is active in student clubs, including serving as an advisor to the Psychology Club, and he volunteers at local sports fundraisers to support human services non-profits. Mark’s unwavering commitment to his students and the greater community make him a very deserving recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Adjunct Teaching.

Excellence in Classified Service: Diana StefanovichDiana Stefanovich began at the College in 2015 and has steadily risen through the ranks into her current role as Senior Custodian and a crew leader within the Facilities and Operations department. She has proven herself to be an invaluable member of the team during COVID operations and is often the first to respond to help with any issue at hand. Diana is a leader who models excellence in going above and beyond to make sure the job is done right. Her commitment to service leadership and dedication to her colleagues and the College make her a very deserving recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Classified Service.

Excellence in Faculty ServiceMelissa BarlettDr. Melissa Barlett is a highly respected Associate Professor of Biology whose tenure dates back to 2011. She has consistently demonstrated excellence as a faculty member dedicated to the development and advancement of her students. She supports the growth of her colleagues through intentional information sharing and service on a vast range of College councils and workgroups. Melissa is also actively involved in Women in Science and Engineering (WISE). Melissa’s outstanding impact in the classroom and support of the professional growth of her colleagues make her a very deserving recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service.

Excellence in Professional ServiceKathy KotaryDuring her 38 years of service to the College in various roles, Kathy Kotary has consistently demonstrated reliable professionalism and a willingness to go above and beyond in pursuing excellence. Currently serving as Intake Process & Support for the Rome Campus, Kathy assists students in a broad range of capacities, including liaison for Financial Aid, Admissions, Records and Registration, Accessibility Resources, billing, and more. She is reliable, organized, and passionate about achieving success for each student. Kathy’s extraordinary commitment to students and her colleagues make her a very deserving recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service.

Excellence in Professional ServiceKendrick MorrisonAssistant Director of Admissions Kendrick (“Kenny”) Morrison has represented the College with outstanding energy and dedication for over a decade. Kenny recruits prospective students through high school visits and college fairs, and also coordinates large on-campus recruitment events. He excels at providing a personalized experience for each student. He displays a positive mindset and willingness to go above and beyond, and is an active contributor to a wide variety of campus initiatives. Kenny’s spirit of service and commitment to excellence make him a very deserving recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service.

Excellence in TeachingThomas MihevcThomas (“Tom”) Mihevc is a highly respected Associate Professor whose tenure dates back to 1999. He currently serves as a cornerstone faculty member of computer science and cybersecurity programming at MVCC. Tom has provided crucial faculty support to develop the cybersecurity curriculum that is nationally recognized as a NSA Center of Academic Excellence. His service as a long-time advisor to the College’s “Droids” computer science club has enabled students to supplement their classroom work and build a professional portfolio attractive to potential employers. Tom’s dedication to his students and colleagues, and commitment to academic excellence make him a very deserving recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

A Message from the Chancellor

May 14, 2021

To the Mohawk Valley Community College Graduating Class of 2021:

Living through a pandemic is likely not how you expected to finish your last semesters at MVCC, nor how you expected to start your life after college. Major milestone celebrations over the 13 months have been postponed, cancelled, or modified, including commencements. I know this is not the ideal outcome after years of hard work and studying, but this does not diminish your tremendous accomplishment. Despite all the challenges thrown at you and having your senior year of college unceremoniously turned upside-down, you persevered to earn your degree.

Although we were not able to celebrate your graduation with all the normal pomp and circumstance it so rightfully deserves, let it be known that we are all so proud of the Class of 2021—the persistence, determination, and grit you have shown to complete your studies amidst a number of obstacles is exemplary.

As you look toward the future, know your SUNY education has prepared you to succeed in whatever you put your mind to—whether it be furthering your education or joining the workforce. The 2021 Hawks will continue the SUNY legacy of changing the world no matter where you go, and I look forward to seeing all that you accomplish.
