    Abstract

This project is a qualitative research on the connection between museum exhibition design and the resulting

visit experiences, with specific reference to the case of Moesgaard Museum’s exhibitions on ancient history.

These exhibitions are housed in Moesgaard Museum near Aarhus, a museum of archaeology and

anthropology. It is a series of six inter-connected exhibitions each covering an era in Danish history from the

arrival of the first humans in the stone age to the Danish middle ages after the nation converted to

    Christianity.

This case is chosen for its character as an interactive, experience-oriented exhibition form. Here digital and

physical media are closely integrated to create greater potential for a unified experience that is dramatic and

immersive. The exhibitions as a whole with their varied use of media offer freedom of choice for guests for

multiple approaches and routes. We are looking at the ways, they manage this freedom by guiding guests and

shaping the experience through exhibition design that takes visual and spatial affordances into account.

The exhibitions are experience-oriented in the sense that they use atmosphere and storytelling to create a

dramatic experience that evokes feelings and emotional responses related to each historical era they cover.

They use storytelling on both the small and large scale to great effect. On the small case this takes the form of

widespread use of first person character voices telling stories about life in the past as subjective, dramatized

personal stories. On the large-scale narrative elements are seen in the way each exhibition tells a specific story

of a historical period focusing on a specific theme like bog sacrifices for the iron age. Together they also show

the progression of society and technology throughout millennia. Each room uses atmosphere to support their

theme by using light, sound, moving images and decorations. We also note that many of the exhibitions

incorporate elements, that are closer to art installations than traditional historical exhibitions. These may seem

illogical at first and communicate no clear content, but they use aesthetic expression that is open to

interpretation to create a more emotional communication of the historical content.

We research these elements through a guest experience focus, where we qualitatively study the experiences

of six visitors including ourselves. Our own experiences are made available as an object of research through

autoethnography, while the experiences of our other participants are studied through observations and

    interviews.

Through studying the individual experiences, we analyze the personal factors that shape the visits as well as

the effect of the exhibition designs and their use of specific forms of exhibitions design.

We conclude that the kinds of interactive museum experiences we study are highly variable and unpredictable

but are subject to general factors that exhibitions can be designed to accommodate. Specifically, we describe

how navigation of the exhibitions shape what content visitors see through their visit and the content as well as

it’s context enable the guests sensemaking process about the historical periods.
