Storytelling for Coaching Success – Creating Awareness Using Storytelling in your Coaching Practice enhances your skills as a Coach. There are many ways that this expertise comes to light, always focusing on what you can offer your client in accompanying them on their journey of self-realization.

Integration

Stories assist in the integration of all kinds of information from many different sources. Often it’s the story that helps it all come together in an appropriate and attainable manner.

As you use your personal story in your business make sure you focus on your offer. It’s not enough to just tell the story of your expertize, you need to make sure you are clear on what you are offering.

Of course, your story is where you can get clear on what that unique offer is. The common themes that you see in your pivotal moment stories are also the core way that you will offer support and value to your client.

As your story unfolds, you will notice what I call the Magic thread. This is the story line that exists throughout the whole of your professional and personal experience. When our story emerges you’ll notice that all those seemingly random life events fit in. They all make sense, there are no mistakes. The Magic thread (your story line) makes everything relevant and is there to clarity your purpose and direction in your business.

Trust your story, it holds all the answers!

Inquiry Listening to stories and learning to tell our own stories works as a tool for inquiry, helping our clients attain greater clarity, understanding and awareness

Using storytelling to shift perspectives, we uncover underlying concerns and determine the difference between fact and interpretation.

Sometime, when you come across a story that creates pain and discomfort, it may be time to get rid of the story altogether. The best way to disconnect from the attachment we create to our stories is using The Work of Byron Katie.

With her 4 questions and the Turnaround, you can return to the no-story space, and ease the pain and suffering that we bring upon ourselves through the un-true story.

Move to Action Stories, both heard and told, help our clients discover new ideas to assist in moving into action and initiate real change.

The stories that our clients tell help them identify their own strengths and areas for growth and learning

Using stories we can assist our clients in distinguishing between the trivial and significant both in issues and behaviors; they learn to recognize their own behavioral patterns

Coaching Skills Using Storytelling as a guide, a metaphor, an illustrative tool and a resource of age-old wisdom; we can achieve success in our Coaching Skills. Here’s the example of the story wisdom at work!

Goal Setting

Tell me the story of how your life will look?

Let’s work into your story how you will take new actions, how you will continue to find new opportunities. How will you learn more? Now, retell your story.

What other ideas can you incorporate in your new story?

What are other solutions?

Well done, I love your story! But keep going, I want another version! A bigger and better one now!

Action Planning

Once you have described the vision, you have told the new story, it’s time to develop and maintain coaching plan.

Chart a success line, noting all successes along the way.

Managing Progress & Accountability

The story has sub stories along the way.

Each session and sub story will require action, as coach you will request action

The Coaching Plan needs to be monitor and followed along the way, the story needs to be told again and again and tracked for changes.

During the constant re-telling of stories, there is a validation process. Make sure that your story is still exciting and empowering. If not, it’s time for a new story!

Stephen Denning in The Springboard says ‘when we hear a story that touches us profoundly, our lives are suffused with meaning…The connectedness between the

self and the universe has been reset. The story is something that comes from outside. But the meaning is something that emerges from within. When a story reaches our hearts with deep meaning, it takes hold of us. Once it does so, we can let it go, and yet it remains with us. We do not weary of this experience. Why should we? Once we have had one story, we are already hungry for another. We want more in case it too can transmit the magic of connectedness between ourselves and the universe’.

There is a magical space created by the storyteller and the story. It is a space that describes amazing transformation and a world that is just and right, often a world where truth and magic exist. This is a world that most of us would like to create for ourselves. With storytelling as a natural and integral part of the coaching process, we can dare to imagine a better world and a life better lived…we can dare to be who we truly want to be.
