Problem of the DayJulianne’s friendship bracelet has 8 beads. When it broke, the beads fell off. She could only find one bead. To fix her bracelet, what fraction of the beads does she need to buy?
Julianne needs 7/8 of the beads to repair her necklace.

Concept Development
I bought two oranges for lunch today. I cut them both into fourths to eat.Draw a picture on your white board to show how I cut my two oranges.

Concept DevelopmentIf one orange is one whole, how many copies of ¼ are in one whole?
FOURWhat is our unit?
Fourths
![Page 10: MODULE 5 LESSON 9 Build and write fractions greater than one whole using unit fractions.](https://reader038.fdocuments.net/reader038/viewer/2022110206/56649f465503460f94c688b0/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Concept DevelopmentHow many copies of 1 fourth (1/4) are in two whole oranges?
8Count them with me … Are you sure my unit is still fourths?
Yes! The unit is still fourths. One orange is one whole … not two
oranges. So I had TWO whole units for a total
of 8/4!

Concept DevelopmentNow I got hungry and ate one whole orange and 1 piece of the second orange. How many pieces did I eat?5 piecesWhat is our unit?fourths
How much of an orange did I eat for lunch?

Draw a number bond showing the number of fourths I ate. Show a bond for EACH unit fraction.

If you compare the number of pieces I ate to one whole orange. What do you notice?
The number of parts is greater than the number of equal parts in a whole. I ate more than one whole orange!
So today we learned that …When the NUMERATOR (or top number) in a fraction is larger than the DENOMINATOR (or bottom number) we have more than one whole.
![Page 14: MODULE 5 LESSON 9 Build and write fractions greater than one whole using unit fractions.](https://reader038.fdocuments.net/reader038/viewer/2022110206/56649f465503460f94c688b0/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)

Now draw a new number bond with two parts. One part should show the pieces that make up the whole. The second part should show the pieces that are more than the whole.
