N Scale Steam Locomotive BookAddendum.

Jim Kline and Craig Barrow have roundedup some great articles on kit bashing N scalesteam engines. These are published in a sepa-rate 44 page booklet that will be included withnew orders for the year old 144 page N SteamLocomotive book.

The addendum is also available separatelyfor $6.00 Included are six 50’s era SP steamthat Russell Straw built to go with his NTRAKmodule set of the Sugar Land, Texas sugarrefinery complex. Gerd Ziller from Germanyshows how he built three truck Shay locomo-tives out of Atlas two truck Shays.

Victor Miranda reworked the Bachmann 0-6-0 switcher for a better motor and improvedpickup. The result is a smooth running switcher.Dave Vollmer converted a Bachmann Spec-trum 2-8-0 into a Pennsy H10 class locomo-tive.

An Erie S-1 Berkshire was created from aLife-Like engine by Chris Schmuck. PaulDowns used the same engine to create Louis-ville and Nashville M1 “Big Emmas” andincludes tips on how he made mold masters sothat he could have a fleet of locomotives.

Tony Hines, following Russ Straw’s ideafor stretching a Kato Mikado from a 2-8-2 toa 2-10-2 and built a B&O S-1 “Big Six”. Thisis a very detailed article.

Tsuguo Ebihara has two articles on rework-ing Japanese models to create a Pennsy K4and a UP 2-6-6-2.

There are also reviews of recent new Nsteam and useful DCC compatibility and steamdetail parts lists.

See page 23 or www.ntrak.org for orderinginformation.

Adding Home Operation to an NTRAK Module

by Jim FitzGerald

This article is based on pages 2-22 & 2-23 inour How-to Book. If you want some moresuggestions and ideas, please refer to the book.

You live in an apartment or a mobile home. You really don’t have space for a home layout.By building an NTRAK module, you can bepart of large layouts with a local club. But whatto do with the module between shows? Couldit also be a home layout? See diagram on pg 21.

Shown here is a four foot long and 18” widespecial unit that turns a NTRAK module intoa mini layout with a lot of switching puzzles tosolve. When you are ready for an operatingsession, the special unit can be taken out ofstorage and connected to the module. This willadd six industries to your layout. The key tooperating this small layout is the “run aroundtrack”. It makes it possible to leave four cars byindustry #A and shift the engine around thecars and couple to the other end. Now you can

work Industries #B,C,D & F. With the engineon the original end of the car string you canwork Industry #A and E.

If you have industries on your module, theycan be worked from the “Blue” track and thered and yellow can be yard tracks.

A simple extension can be used on the otherend of the NTRAK module. In the How toBook a second Special Unit is also added andsix more industries are available. Dependingon the design of the second unit, the threeNTRAK tracks could have other uses. Theunits would “C” clamp to the module andwould need at least one leg on the outer end forsupport, two would be better. All tracks wouldbe wired to a single throttle. MicroTrains®magnetic uncoupling ramps could be used, oryou could do as the railroads do and uncoupleby hand. Some modelers use a long toothpickor the “Rix Pix” uncoupling tool to spread thecouplers as they pull the train away.

Oklahoma City N Conventionafternoon, we start setting up the big Ntraklayout, which occupies an area that is 100 by60 feet in size. We usually try to reserve tablespace for T-TRAK modules and our whiteelephant sale. This provides attendees withthe opportunity to bring items to the show andsell them without having to reserve a booth.

The Oklahoma City Train Show starts Sat-urday morning at 9 am at the Oklahoma StateFairgrounds in the Transportation Building.Attendance usually tops 12,000 attendees overthe two days. The show has layouts in allscales, and vendors from as far away as NewHampshire. Items for sale range from Z scaleto tinplate to memorabilia, to sound record-ing, books and everything in between.

After the show closes on Saturday, we willbe going back to the convention hotel, andhaving our annual banquet. Last year, BobeyeHall was our guest speaker. This year's speakerhas not been announced, yet. Our master ofceremonies is Mr. Richard Fisher and we tryto have a door prize for everyone.

vanced consisting address. We will also begiving out extra blocks of 25 numbers forthose who request them.

Our convention hotel is the Clarion, whichis located only a few miles from the FairGrounds where the Train Show is held. Thereis a train show rate of $62 per night which canbe guaranteed by calling 405-942-8511. Res-ervations must be made before November14th.

To register, just visit the Oklahoma N-Railweb site at oknrail.org and click on the con-vention link. If you need more information, you can send mail to [email protected] call 972-489-7903. We do request thatregistration be completed by November 23rd.We look forward to seeing you.

Sunday morning starts off with a pancakebreakfast for conventioneers, dealers and otherexhibitors, that is a show tradition. Doorsopen at 11 am and the show runs until 5 pm.

We don't charge a registration fee for at-tendees who bring a module or are membersof a club that brings modules. However, wedo require that everyone register and this hasbecome even more important for runningDCC.

In the past, we have been able to let peoplerun their engines as they program them andthere have been only a few conflicts. As thenumber of people running DCC grows and aspeople increase the size of their DCC fleets,it is now becoming necessary to start assign-ing numbers, and we are giving out registra-tion numbers that can be used for the ad-

ADDING CURVES - I have always likedcurvaceous track because that is the way myfavorite prototypes really are and trains lookgood snaking around broad curves. The objectwas to add free form curves to layouts and alsokeep the basic layout width of 14, 18 or 20‚etc. without the need for extra spacer modules. The addition of 2 and 2 sometimes boggles themind in the rush to set up. I came up withseveral plans for special 2 x 6 corner thatmaybe looks like my New River modules butare smaller, lighter and simpler too. See sketchthat Jim is using to keep me honest on thecurve standards!

NTRAK STANDARDS - One module canbe a standard 3 x 3 corner and should havesome scenery to match the new design. the 2x 6 corner. This 2 x 6 can fit a 3 x 6 frame. Oneoption is to give the outside yellow and redmains a radius of 24” and 25.5” radii so thatthe blue can have a 22.5”radius. This in turnallows more room for a healthy 10” tangent inthe middle of the S curve thus helping to keepthe long cars on the rails!

LAYOUT DIMENSIONS - The other cor-ners are the standard 3’ x 3’ size because theyare smaller and lighter than the 4 x 4s and arewhat our club, NVNtrak, uses but the samefree form ideas could be used based aroundlarger 4 x 4 corners. The width of the layoutshown is 14” which is the norm if using 2 ea.4 footers on the ends with 3 x 3 corners. I callthis "free form" because these are really curvesand no longer 90-degree "corners". One ormore similar free form could be added else-where in the layout.

VARIETY FOR SPICE - An option is toextend the 180-degree loop on the bottomwith more modules. When clamping up themodules it is always a good idea to eyeball theconnector tracks a second time to ensure youdo not make the curves worse but line them tomake the smoothest curves. Variety is thespice of Ntrak. I hope it will get others to thinkoutside the box layout, which was the wholereason for the New River style modules in thefirst place.
