The units can be hand assembled without tools and deployed in shallow water to protect shorelines, estuaries and sensitive habitats from oil contamination. Each 12 foot long unit is composed of 4, 3ft. x 3ft. cells which are joined together with other units to create a continuous, stable, oil absorbent barrier that functions in the presence of mild wave action. q C.E. The cells are not covered or lined with fabric that interferes with the passage of oil onto the cells where it is absorbed. Each cell contains 24 replaceable oil absorbent elements which together can retain approximately 150 gal. of petroleum or 264,000 gal. per mile.
The welded wire mesh cellular units are shipped in collapsed form and are assembled at the job site. The assembled units can be deployed then filled or pre-filled and lifted into place by machinery. The 4 cell units are stabilized by placing approximately 8 cu. ft. of ballast in each cell prior to loading the 24 absorbent elements. The ballast can be sand
bags, rock, crushed concrete or other suitable material. The units can also be anchored by driving steel rods through the spiral connectors at each cell corner into the bottom.
The welded wire mesh cells can be easily opened without tools to remove and replace the saturated elements. The Modular Gabion Systems oil Containment Barrier is quickly deployed and is suitable for temporary or long term use. The proprietary corrosion resistant, fuse bonded coating is engineered for continuous use in salt water and has demonstrated outstanding performance in aggressive environments.
