NWeLcOMe tO the 2012-2013 seasON at the Modlin Center for the Arts. In this blockbuster season, we are proud to present an eclectic array of talent, including a diverse mix of American Roots music and global offerings. We are also proud to continue offering unparalleled access through pre-concert discussions; lectures and demonstrations; master classes; meet-and-

greets; ModlinArts After Words, our post-show question-and-answer sessions; and the ModlinArts Artist Voices Series. We launch the 2012-2013 season and our ModlinArts Concert Series with bluegrass legend Del McCoury. For more than five decades, McCoury has enthralled hardcore fans and bluegrass novices alike. The series continues with incredible talent from across the globe including the raucous dhol n’ brass band Red Baraat, flamenco star Buika, ukulele phenomenon Jake Shimabukuro, and rising fado star Ana Moura. Also included in the Concert Series is an all-star line-up including Dr. John and the Blind Boys of Alabama, Dailey & Vincent, Dr. Ralph Stanley, Judy Collins, and the Lovin’ Spoonful’s John Sebastian with “Dawg Music” creator David Grisman.

This season, we celebrate the genius of pioneering composer Philip Glass. Through films, lectures, and concerts — including a discussion and a performance with Philip Glass — the Modlin Center will explore the life and works of this influential composer. Other remarkable performers in our Classical Series include renowned pianist Simone Dinnerstein; Modlin favorite, the Shanghai Quartet; baritone Matthew Worth; our Grammy®-winning ensemble-in-residence eighth blackbird; the Takács Quartet; and the Ebène Quartet.

The ModlinArts Jazz series features guitar prodigy Julian Lage, followed by 2009 Thelonious Monk Competition winner bassist Ben Williams. The series also features the Birdland Big Band, directed by drummer Tommy Igoe, and the salsa sounds of trombonist Chris Washburne’s S.Y.O.T.O.S. with special guests, the UR Jazz Ensemble. For families, eighth blackbird will take the stage for an exciting children’s performance in our annual Family Arts Day Celebration followed by the high-tech Lightwire Theatre performances of the Ugly Duckling and the tortoise and the hare.

The ModlinArts Dance Series will feature five celebrated troupes including Jessica Lang Dance, Philadanco, Mark Morris Dance Group, Black Grace, and the Russian National Ballet performing the sleeping Beauty. In addition, we are offering two theatre classics: L.A. Theatre Works’ Pride and Prejudice, and The Acting Company’s of Mice and Men. Other highlights include comedian, author, and actor Mike Birbiglia, the acrobatics of Cirque Chinois, the kung fu mastery of the Shaolin Warriors, the Pipes and Drums of the Black Watch, flamenco guitarist Paco Peña, and Les 7 Doigts de la Main’s mind-altering cirque show PsY.

Films and live broadcasts have become a staple of the Modlin Center. In addition to continuing the National Theatre of London’s NT Live HD broadcasts, which brings the best of London theatre to Richmond, the Modlin Center is proud to be a host site for the new independent film tour on screen/In Person. This series will explore the connections between the arts and humanities and will feature question-and-answer sessions with the filmmakers following each screening.

Our season would not be complete without the extraordinary talents of the University of Richmond students and faculty. We encourage you to enjoy outstanding performances by the University of Richmond Department of Theatre and Dance, the free concert series provided by the Department of Music, the stunning visual arts exhibits and lectures offered by the University of Richmond Museums, and the events offered by the Department of Art and Art History.

Best,

Deborah S. SommersExecutive Director

cONceRtsDel Mccoury Bandwith special guest Chatham County Line

Sun. September 9, 2012 • 7:30pmCamp Concert hall, Booker hall of Music $38

“I’d rather hear Del Mccoury sing ‘are You teasing Me’ than just about anything.” – Vince Gill

For 50 years, Del McCoury’s music has defined authenticity for hard-core bluegrass fans. A direct musical descendant of the Father of Bluegrass, Bill Monroe, and armed with a musical open-mindedness, McCoury has parlayed the traditional sounds of the genre to a much broader audience by way of unconventional collaborations including Phish and country rocker Steve Earle, among others. The Del McCoury Band has won 31 International Bluegrass Music Association Awards and a Grammy® for Best Bluegrass Album.

Join the Modlin Center for the Arts in kicking off the 2012-2013 season with a pre-show reception beginning at 6pm in the Booth Lobby.

Red BaraatFri. September 21, 2012 • 7:30pmAlice Jepson theatre $20 (seated tickets and standing orchestra pit passes available)

“Imagine a New Orleans street band playing Indian Bollywood tunes with a go-go beat — you can’t? then just listen, because your day is about to get better. It’s a crazy blast of fun.” – All Songs Considered

Pioneering Brooklyn dhol n’ brass band Red Baraat has made a name for itself as one of the best live bands playing anywhere in the world. Led by dhol player Sunny Jain, the nine-piece band – comprised of dhol (a double-sided, barrel-shaped, North Indian drum slung over one shoulder) drumset, percussion, sousaphone, and five horns – melds the infectious North Indian rhythm Bhangra with a host of sounds, namely funk, go-go, Latin, and jazz. Simply put, Sunny Jain and Red Baraat have created and defined an explosive sound entirely their own.

Due to the potential for overwhelming fun, the Modlin Center is offering both seated tickets and standing orchestra pit passes for this event.

BuikaSun. OctOber 21, 2012 • 7:30pmCamp Concert hall, Booker hall of Music $34

“a mesmerizing, cross-cultural stew featuring the wailing emotionality of cante (flamenco song) and coplas... with undercurrents of Latin jazz and soul.” – Washington Post

A trailblazing force in contemporary Spanish music, Buika has become a true revelation to those who thought flamenco had little left to contribute to Spanish music. Her unique blend of flamenco, jazz, funk, copla, and neo-soul has made her one of NPR’s 50 Great Voices of all time and led the new York times to call her music “luminous... magnificent... superb!”

Sponsored in part by the H.G. Quigg Endowment

This tour engagement of Red Baraat is supported in part by the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation’s Tours program with support from the National Endowment for the Arts’ Regional Touring Program.

Jake shimabukuro, ukulelemOn. nOvember 5, 2012 • 7:30pmCamp Concert hall, Booker hall of Music $32

“Jake is taking the instrument to a place that I can’t see anybody else catching up with him.” – pearl Jam’s eddie Vedder

Hawaiian-born ukulele phenomenon Jake Shimabukuro (shee-ma-boo-koo-row), broke onto the world scene via a viral YouTube video in 2006. Since then, his technical virtuosity and broad musical palette – including jazz, rock, original Hawaiian standards, and innovative pop covers – have fundamentally redefined how the seemingly limited instrument is perceived by millions of people. Acclaimed by the new York times for his “buoyant musicianship,” Shimabukuro has been featured on CNN and NPR, in tIMe and rolling stone magazines, and has performed alongside musical giants such as Béla Fleck, Cyndi Lauper, and Yo-Yo Ma.

Spirituals to Funk featuring Dr. John and the Blind Boys of alabamatue. nOvember 13, 2012 • 7:30pmCarpenter theatre, richmond Centerstage $42 | $38 | $34

New Orleans keyboardist and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Dr. John joins with gospel music legends the Blind Boys of Alabama in their first-ever joint tour. Under Dr. John’s musical direction, these two icons of American music will trace a legacy that began with Dr. John’s appearance on the Blind Boys’ Grammy® Award-winning album Down in new orleans, and continues with the Blind Boys’ appearance on Dr. John’s upcoming Louis Armstrong tribute album. Based on the legendary Carnegie Hall spirituals to swing concerts produced by John Hammond in the 1930s, spirituals to funk explores the connections between jazz, blues, and gospel.

This performance will take place at Carpenter Theatre, Richmond CenterStage. Ticket prices for this event include a $2 per ticket restoration fee.

Dailey and Vincent holiday concertFri. nOvember 30, 2012 • 7:30pmCamp Concert hall, Booker hall of Music $36

Celebrate the holidays with Dailey & Vincent! This 21st century bluegrass duo, Jamie Dailey (formerly of Doyle Lawson’s Quicksilver) and Darrin Vincent (formerly of Ricky Skaggs’ Kentucky Thunder) both had long careers in bluegrass before they officially joined forces in 2007. Uncanny harmony, impeccable arrangements, and flawless performance are standard fare for this imitable duo. With 13 International Bluegrass Music Association Awards, including three Entertainer of the Year Awards, it’s no wonder the new York times called Dailey & Vincent “the most celebrated new bluegrass act of the last few years.”

Continue the festivities and join the Modlin Center for the Arts in celebrating the holidays with a post-show reception in the Booth Lobby.

Retro Roots Tour featuring Dr. Ralph stanley and the clinch Mountain Boys with special guests The Seldom Scene and Jim Lauderdale

Wed. February 13, 2013 • 7:30pmCamp Concert hall, Booker hall of Music $36

“a master performer without an expiration date…” – Rolling Stone

Ralph Stanley’s voice is not of this century. Nor of the last one for that matter. Preserved in the cultural amber of remote Appalachia, this terse, forlorn sound is the bedrock of Stanley’s wholly unique style. But don’t mistake an ancient voice for ancient ways. Stanley tours and performs with the vigor and elan of a rock star, and over the past six decades has sculpted an unprecedented career that has included a Grammy® Award, a National Medal of Arts, and countless IBMA awards and nominations.

The Seldom Scene remains at the forefront of progressive and traditional bluegrass with tight harmonies, a love affair with melody, and impeccable musicianship. The band is made up of Dudley Connell (guitar), Ben Eldridge (banjo), Lou Reid (mandolin), Fred Travers (Dobro®), and Ronnie Simpkins (bass) – with all members contributing to the vocal sound that earned them a Grammy® nomination for their 2007 release scenechronized.

Jim Lauderdale is a multi-talented performer and songwriter, with successes in both country and bluegrass music. His roots stem from the Carolinas, yet his career has taken him all over the United States and abroad, making him an international recording artist with an ever-growing fan base. Lauderdale won Artist of the Year and Song of the Year at the first Honors and Awards Show held by the Americana Music Association in 2002.

an evening with Judy collinsFri. march 1, 2013 • 7:30pmCamp Concert hall, Booker hall of Music $40

In a career that spans more than 50 years, Judy Collins has thrilled audiences worldwide with her signature blend of interpretive folk songs and contemporary themes. At age 13, she made her public debut performing Mozart, but it was the music of artists such as Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, as well as the traditional songs of the folk revival, that sparked her love of lyrics. She soon moved away from the classical piano and began her lifelong love of the guitar. Collins has continued an impressive musical career with an extensive catalog from every decade since the 1960s.

DanúSat. march 16, 2013 • 7:30pmCamp Concert hall, Booker hall of Music $36

Hailing from historic County Waterford, Danú is one of the leading traditional Irish ensembles today. Their standing-room-only concerts throughout Ireland feature high-energy performances and a glorious mix of ancient Irish music and new repertoire. For more than a decade, Danú’s virtuosi players on flute, tin whistle, fiddle, button accordion, bouzouki, and vocals (Irish and English), have performed around the globe and recorded seven critically acclaimed albums.

ana Moura, fadoWed. april 3, 2013 • 7:30pmCamp Concert hall, Booker hall of Music $34

“she [makes] each song a series of small dramatic surges: glimmers of hope, hints of sensuality, passages of melancholy, glints of determination.” – The New York Times

Portuguese fado is in the midst of a glorious renaissance, and the music’s brightest young star is Ana Moura. With her captivating interpretations, luxuriant voice, and passionate stage presence, Moura has earned an international fan base drawn in by her ability to cross over into other styles while retaining fado’s deep emotional commitment. Moura honors the traditions of her native idiom while contributing to its expansion through collaborations with such artists as Mick Jagger and Prince.

John sebastian & David GrismanSat. april 27, 2013 • 7:30pmCamp Concert hall, Booker hall of Music $36

The musical history of John Sebastian and David Grisman dates back to their college days in the 1960s at New York University in the heyday of the Greenwich Village folk revival. The two made their first recording together as members of the Even Dozen Jug Band. After legendary solo careers – Sebastian as the lead singer of one of America’s most popular bands, the Lovin’ Spoonful and Grisman as the father of the acoustic music revolution with his genre-defying “Dawg music” – the pair have reunited to create “Satisfied,” a stunning collection of acoustic duets featuring traditional folk tunes, blues, instrumentals, and original songs.

eighth blackbird with Nico MuhlyWed. march 20, 2013 • 7:30pmCamp Concert hall, Booker hall of Music $20

Koyaanisqatsi, a Hopi Indian word meaning “life out of balance” was Godfrey Reggio’s debut as a film director and the first film in the QATSI trilogy, the informal name given to a series of films produced by Reggio and scored by Philip Glass. Created between 1975 and 1982, the film is an apocalyptic vision of the collision of two different worlds – urban life and technology versus the environment. Mirroring the movement of the images, the musical score is considered one of Philip Glass’ best known works.

Film: La Belle et La Bête (Beauty and the Beast)Jean Cocteau, director

mOn. OctOber 1, 2012 • 7pm Camp Concert hall, Booker hall of Music $5

“For me, La Belle et La Bête has always been the most compelling of cocteau’s films. this work, more than any other, expresses the profundity of his thought and the eloquence of his artistic vision” – philip Glass

Central to the “modern” art movement of the 20th century, Jean Cocteau’s work used questions of art, immortality, and the cre-ative process as the subjects of his work. Presented as a simple fairy tale, La Belle et La Bête is an extremely thoughtful and subtle reflection on the very nature of an artist’s creative process.

One of the most celebrated and unique works in Philip Glass’ career is his live interpretation of La Belle et La Bête. Originally conceived as part of a trilogy of stage productions celebrating the work of Jean Cocteau, La Belle et La Bête is Glass’ most challenging experiment in synchronized music with film. For this production, Glass removed the film’s original dialogue track and Georges Auric score, replacing it with his own score played live by the Philip Glass Ensemble, with the dialogue sung by live singers and synchronized with the actors in the film.

Damiani’s choreographic voice reflects her exploration of the notions of separation of the body and of identity inside the group.
