AbstractThermal Response testing using the Cone Calorimeter (ASTM E 1354) was performed onspecimens submitted by John W. Mallette Sr. The Reflectec Thermal Fabric specimens wereapproximately 4.5 inches square, 1/4 inch thick and the Reflectec Fiberboard wasapoproximately 6 inch square and 1/8 inch thick. The testing procedure was according to anagreement with John W. Mallette Co. and Omega Point Laboratories in which the ConeCalorimeter was used to expose the top side of the specimens to radiative heat flux whilemeasuring the temperatures of the top surface, the bottom surface, and 1/2 inch below thespecimen. The results are in terms of bottom side temperatures as a function of top sidesurface temperatures.

INTRODUCTION

The tests described herein were conducted in accordance with a modified versionof ASTM E1354 Standard Test Method. The test method for this series of tests isbased on the observation that radiant heat applied to a surface will provide atemperature increase on that surface.

The testing procedure was according to an agreement with John W. Mallette Sr.,and Omega Point Laboratories in which the Cone Calorimeter was used to exposethe top side of the specimens to radiative heat flux while measuring thetemperatures of the top surface, the bottom surface, and 1/2 inch below thespecimen. The results are in terms of bottom side temperatures as a function oftop side surface temperatures.

TEST PROCEDURE

To assist the reader in understanding the test apparatus and procedures, Figure1, at the end of the text of this report, contains a schematic drawing of the conecalorimeter apparatus.

In this test method, an electrically heated radiant energy source in the shape of atruncated cone is positioned 75 mm (3 in.) from the surface of the specimen andproduces an irradiance level over surface area of the specimen. The specimen ispositioned horizontally. The specimen is mounted using a customized specimenholder that allowed air to move freely above and below the specimen. The framereduces the effective exposed surface area of the specimen to approximately 16square inches (4” x 4”).

The temperatures of the top side (hot side)and bottom side (cold side) of thespecimen are measured with 24 ga. type K thermocouples. Generally, thermocouple #1 (TC #1) was placed in contact with the top surface, TC #2 wasplaced 1/2” below the specimen surface (at the request of the client) and TC #3 wasplaced in contact with the surface of the bottom side of the specimen. Thetemperatures were recorded using a computerized data acquisition system as afunction of time.
