Los elementos de una armaduras están sujetas a dos fuerzas axiales en los miembros que pueden ser de tensión o
compresión. Un solo grado de libertad para un elemento de armaduras (barras) es el desplazamiento axial en
cualquier nudo. Las dimensiones de la sección transversal y propiedad de los materiales de cualquier elemento son
usualmente asumidos constante alrededor de la longitud. Los elementos pueden ser conectados en dos
dimensiones (2D) o tres dimensiones (3D) de configuración. Los elementos de las armaduras son típicamente usados
en el análisis de estructuras.

Los elementos tipo viga son miembros esbeltos sujetos a cargas laterales y momentos. En general tienen 6 grados de
libertad en cada nudo incluyendo traslación y rotación. Un elemento viga en curvatura pura tiene solo 4 grados de
libertad.
Los elementos barra son miembros esbeltos sujetos a carga lateral, carga axial y momento. Estos poseen las
propiedades de ambos armaduras y elementos viga y siempre son denominados elementos viga columna. Una
estructura en tres dimensiones incluye los efectos flexión biaxial, torsión, deformación axial y cortante biaxial por
deformación. Un elemento barra es modelado conectando dos puntos a través de una línea. Cada elemento posee
coordenadas locales que definen la propiedad de la sección y las cargas.

Los elementos planos son elementos solidos en dos dimensiones estos actúan en un plano.
Estos tienen dos planos de rotación y el desplazamiento normal como grado de libertad. El modelo de estos
elementos en el plano de curvatura se comporta en dos dimensiones.
