Basic Operations This manual describes the operation of the Model 9734 Hand Held Terminal,

• Basic Terminal Functions

• Party-Line Operation

• NV Setup Upload/Downloads

• Two Line (9732) Emulation for communicating with older Thermo Scientific (“S-Series) equipment.

Connection to Instrument The 9734 plugs into the RJ-11 (phone jack) connector installed on all Thermo Scientific instruments.

Note: The Model 9734 HHT requires an 8 Vdc power source. The RJ-11 connector for the RS-485 port on Thermo Scientific gauges includes two wires for the RS-485 communications and two wires for the 8 V supply.

Display The Model 9734 HHT has a 4-line x 20-character display and support the four-line menu system of Thermo’s newer gauges. When the HHT is plugged into the RJ11 connector on a Thermo Scientific gauge, power is supplied to the HHT. The Model 9734 HHT briefly displays a Start-up screen. The measurement display for the gauge is then shown (refer to the operation manual for your gauge for details).

The keypad include numeric keys for data input, arrow keys for navigating the Setup menus of your gauge, and an “Exit” key which can be used to exit the gauge Setup menus and return to the Measurement display at any time.

Arrow Keys - Navigating the Gauge’s Setup Menus From the measurement display, press the → key to enter the gauge Setup Menus and to step through the top-level menu headings. Each menu item will indicate the function of the arrow keys for that menu item.

Press the ↓ key to enter a menu and scroll through the menu items. In many cases, you can use the ↑ key to return to the previous menu item or to scroll through the menu items in the reverse direction. The → key is used to scroll through the list of options for a menu. Use the ← key to return to the previous option. When the correct option is displayed, press ↓ to select that option and go to the next menu item.

Numeric Keys - Entering Numbers Use the number keys to enter data values. Use the “•” (period) key for the decimal point and the “–“ key to indicate a negative number. After keying in a number, press ↓ to indicate the end of the data entry.

Decimal entries may be made in scientific notation by pressing the “•” key a second time during an entry to indicate the start of the exponent. For example,

To enter: 4.567E4 Press: 4.567.4

“Exit” Key Press the Exit key to exit the Setup menus at any time. This will save any changes made to entries in the menus and return to the measurement display.

Note: When you press EXIT, your entries or changes are saved and used by the gauge. If you do not exit the setup menus, any entries or changes are stored and used by the gauge automatically after five minutes of inactivity.

Model 9734 Setup In addition to the numeric keys, arrow keys, and Exit key, the Model 9734 HHT includes the Menu and Enter keys which are used to access the HHT menu functions. There are also five function keys (F1 through F5) that can be used to execute gauge specific commands.

Main Menu From the Measurement Display, press the Menu key to display the top-level menu for the HHT as shown below. Use the arrow keys to highlight the desired option and then press the Enter key to select the highlighted option.

Terminal Party Line Xfer Image Utils

Terminal Mode Highlight Terminal and press Enter to return to the default Terminal mode. In Terminal mode, the HHT serves as a simple ANSI terminal and is used to access the gauge’s Setup menus or to show the gauge’s Measurement Display. Use the arrow keys to navigate the gauge’s Setup menus and use the numeric keys for data input.

Party Line Commands The RS-485 ports on multiple Thermo Scientific gauges can be wired in a “party-line” or multi-drop configuration. This allows communication with multiple gauges from a single RS-485 connection. Refer to the Installation and Operation manuals provided with your gauge for details on wiring and setting up your Thermo Scientific gauges for RS-485 party-line communications.

From the HHT top-level menu, highlight Party Line and press Enter to display the party-line related menu commands:

The function of each of these commands is described below. Each gauge connected to a party-line must be assigned a unique unit number between 1 and 32. By default, gauges are assigned a unit number of zero

for use in normal (not party-line) mode. For more details on party-line communications, refer to the Operation Manual supplied with your gauge.

The Party Line menu contains more than four menu items, so an asterisk (*) is displayed next to the last item to indicate that there are additional menu items.

Press the down arrow (↓) key to scroll down and display the additional items. An asterisk next to the first and last items indicates that additional menu items both precede and follow the displayed menu items.

Connect Gauge #00 In party-line mode, each gauge on the party-line is assigned a unique unit number between 1 and 32. The Connect Gauge # command allows you to connect to and communicate with a specific gauge on the party-line. Press the right (or left) arrow key on the HHT terminal to select the desired unit number, then press the Enter key to connect to the gauge.

This command is assigned to function key F1. Refer to the section “Function Keys” for additional details.

Disconnect The Disconnect command is used to terminate communication with a gauge and return the gauge to “unconnected” mode. This command is assigned to function key F2. Refer to the section “Function Keys” for additional details.

Sleep The Sleep command is used to suspend data streaming (measurement reporting) from all units on the party-line. A unit in Sleep mode will not respond to any command except a Wake Up command.

Shut Up The Shut Up command is similar to the Sleep command. Data streaming (measurement reporting) is suspended from all units on the party-line, however, a gauge will still respond to a Connect command.

Wake Up The Wake Up command countermands the Sleep command. All gauges are returned to the “unconnected” mode and data streaming will be resumed.

Request ID The Request ID command causes every gauge on the party-line to report its assigned unit number.

Reboot Unit #00 The Reboot Unit # command issues a “restart” command (gauge command 81) to the gauge with the specified unit number. Press the right (or left) arrow key on the HHT terminal to select the desired unit number, then press the Enter key to execute the restart command.

This command is assigned to function key F3. Refer to the section “Function Keys” for additional details.

Xfer (Transfer) Image The gauge configuration parameters are stored in the gauge’s Non-Volatile RAM (NVRAM). The Xfer Image facility of the HHT allows the current NVRAM configuration “image” to be downloaded from a gauge to the HHT, or a previously downloaded image can be uploaded from the HHT to a gauge. In addition, an image file can be transferred between the HHT and a PC running either TMTComm communications software or Thermo Scientific Windows-based Setup Software (currently available for the AccuWave Radar Level gauge).

From the HHT top-level menu, highlight Xfer Image and press Enter to display the image transfer commands:

Downloaded images are stored in non-volatile memory on the HHT. The non-volatile memory is maintained using power from the Lithium battery installed in the HHT. Downloaded image files are retained until the Erase Memory command is executed from the Utilities menu or unless the Lithium battery is removed from the HHT.

Upld (Upload) to Gauge #00 The Upld to Gauge # command allows you to transfer an NVRAM image previously stored in the HHT non-volatile memory to a gauge. The default unit number is “00” which is used when the HHT is directly connected to the gauge (normal, non-party line operation). If the gauge is connected in a party-line configuration, press the right (or left) arrow key on the HHT terminal to select the desired unit number. Press the Enter key to transfer the NVRAM image from the HHT to the gauge.

Note: When an NVRAM image is stored in the HHT memory, the Upld to Gauge # menu item is changed to indicate the particular gauge from which the image was downloaded. For example, if the image is from an NCMi level gauge, the menu item will read Upld to NCMi #00.

Dnld (Download) from Gauge #00 The Dnld fm Gauge # command allows you to transfer an NVRAM image from a Thermo Scientific gauge and store the image in the HHT non-volatile memory. The default unit number is “00” which is used when the HHT is directly connected to the gauge (normal, non-party line operation). If the gauge is connected in a party-line configuration, press the right (or left) arrow key on the HHT terminal to select the desired unit number. Press the Enter key to transfer the NVRAM image from the gauge to the HHT.

Xfer (Transfer) HHT ↔ PC The Xfer HHT ↔ PC command allows you to transfer an NVRAM image between the HHT and a PC running Thermo Scientific terminal communications software.

Utilities The Utilities menu includes items that allow you to set the HHT communication settings, display the HHT firmware version number, assign commands to function keys 4 and 5, and to select one of three “image banks” for NVRAM image transfers or to erase all currently stored NVRAM images. From the HHT top-level menu, highlight Utilities and press Enter to display the following list of utility menu items.

Each of these menu items is described below.

COMM: 96007E1 This item sets the communication settings for the HHT. The first four digits are the baud rate, the fifth digit is the number of data bits, the sixth digit (character) indicates the parity, and the last digit is the number of stop bits. Press the → key to scroll through the available settings, press Enter to select the desired setting. The following settings are supported by the HHT: 12007E1, 12008N1, 24007E1, 24008N1, 48007E1, 48008N1, 96007E1, and 96008N1.

Note: The HHT communication parameters must be set to the same values as the RS-485 communication settings on the gauge. The default settings for Thermo Scientific gauges are 9600 baud, 7 data bits, Even parity, and 1 stop bit (96007E1).

Terminal: 9733 (9732) This item selects the terminal emulation mode. The default mode (9733) is compatible with the newer Thermo Scientific gauges that support the 4-line Setup Menu system. The Model 9734 HHT can also emulate the Model 9732 HHT that is used with the older “S-Series” gauges. Press the → key to select the

9733 or 9732 terminal mode, then press Enter to enable the selected mode. Please refer to Appendix A for using the 9732 mode.

Firmware Ver. Select this menu item and press Enter to display the version number and the build date and time of the firmware installed in the Model 9734 HHT. This information may be helpful if you ever have difficulty with your HHT and need to call Thermo Fisher.

Function Keys There are five function keys on the top row of the Model 9734 HHT keypad. The first three function keys, F1 – F3, are pre-assigned to standard gauge commands. Function keys F4 and F5 can be assigned to user-selected gauge commands. To execute a command, press the function key, then press the Enter key. Press the MENU key to return to the measurement display without executing the command. as follows:

F1 - Connect Gauge #00: This command allows you to connect to and communicate with a specific gauge in a party-line configuration. Press the right arrow key to select the desired unit number (1–32), then press the Enter key to connect to the gauge. (Also refer to the section “Party Line Commands.”)

F2 - Disconnect: This command is used to terminate communication with a gauge and return the gauge to “unconnected” mode. (Also refer to the section “Party Line Commands.”)

F3 – Reboot Unit #00: This command issues the reboot command (Thermo Scientific gauge command 81) to a gauge. In a party-line configuration, press the right arrow key to select the desired unit number (1–32), then press the Enter key to reboot the gauge. If connected to a single gauge (not in party-line configuration), use the default unit number of “00” to reboot the gauge connected to the HHT. If the RS-485 communications port should ever appear to be “hung” (the gauge does not respond to the HHT), this command may still allow you to reboot the gauge and reset the gauge’s communication ports.

F U N C K E Y 4 C M D # 0 , F U N C K E Y 5 C M D # 0

The FuncKey 4 CMD#0 or FuncKey 5 CMD#0 items in the Utilities menu allow you to assign a gauge command to the function keys F4 or F5, respectively. Highlight the FuncKey 4(5) CMD#0 item, then press the right (or left) arrow key to select the desired gauge command number. Press the Enter key to assign the command to the function key. (Refer to the Operation manual supplied with your gauge for detailed information on gauge commands.)

After assigning a command to the F4 or F5 function keys, press the function key to execute the assigned command. In party-line configuration, you must then select the desired unit number (press the → key). When connected to a single gauge, use the default unit number of 0. Press the Enter key to execute the command.

Erase HHT Memory This command erases all NVRAM images downloaded from a gauge to the HHT using the Xfer Image facility of the HHT. Up to three different NVRAM images can be downloaded to the three “image banks” in the HHT (see the Image Bank # section below). The Erase Memory command erases the contents of all three image banks.

Image Bank #0 This menu item selects the active image bank, 0, 1, or 2, used to store an NVRAM image downloaded from a gauge to the HHT via the Xfer Image facility. Highlight this menu item and press the → key to select the desired image bank, then press the Enter key to complete the selection.

Note that the Erase Memory command erases the contents of all three image banks, regardless of which image bank is currently active.

Test Keys This is a test facility included primarily for factory quality control purposes. This function prompts the user to press each key on the keypad to verify the keypad operation.

Dnld Lock: Disabled This menu item may be used to lock-out the Image Download feature to prevent overwrites of a stored NV image. Valid settings are “Disabled” (lock-out not active), and “Enabled” (lock-out active).

Upld Lock: Disabled This menu item may be used to lock-out the Image Upload feature to prevent overwrites with a Thermo Scientific instrument. Valid settings are “Disabled” (lock-out not active), and “Enabled” (lock-out active).

Key Debnc: Disabled This setting may be used to activate software Key De-bouncing which ensures the HHT processes only one keypress at a time. Occasionally, the HHT may send multiple key-presses and cause “menu-skipping” while accessing gauge menus. Valid settings are “Disabled” (de-bounce not active), and “Enabled” (de-bounce active).

Wiring and Maintenance The Model 9734 HHT requires an 8 Vdc power supply. The power is normally provided by the gauge via the cable that connects the HHT to the gauge. See the “RS-485 Cable” section below.

Lithium Battery The Model 9734 HHT uses a Sony CR2032 lithium battery to maintain the non-volatile RAM. Typical battery life is 3 years. The battery is accessed via a small, removable panel on the back of the HHT. The lithium battery is not required for the HHT to operate, but if the lithium battery is not installed, user-modified settings and downloaded NVRAM images will not be saved when the 8V power is removed.

RS-485 Cable The Model 9734 HHT is supplied with a removable cable for RS-485 communications. A 6-pin British telephone connector on one end of the cable plugs into the HHT and the 6-pin RJ-11 U.S. telephone connector on the other end plugs into the corresponding jack supplied on the gauge. Note only four wires/pins are actually used, two for the 8 Vdc power and two for the RS-485 communications.

Appendix A: 9732 HHT Emulation Description The 9734 is able to emulate the older “two-line” 9732 HHT which is needed to talk with older Thermo Scientific (“S-Series”) instruments.

Communicating with the S-Series 1. Press Menu on the 9734 HHT and scroll to Util. Scroll to the baud rate setting and

set the baud rate to 12007E1 by pressing the right arrow and press Enter and then press Menu.

2. Press Menu and scroll to the Terminal:9733 and use the right arrow to go to “Terminal: 9732” and press Enter followed by Menu.

3. Press Menu and the display will show the 9732 commands on the bottom line of the display. To connect to a unit that has a unit number other than 0, press Menu and scroll to Party Line and press Enter. The top selection will be “Connect Gauge #00”. Use the right arrow to scroll to the proper unit number and press enter. The handheld should connect. Press Menu and Select “Terminal”. Press Enter.

4. Press “F1” to get into the menus. Use the up and down arrows to scroll through the menus just like you would on the old 9732 HHT.

When in 9732 mode, the 9734 is remapped to:

To set the 9734 HHT back for use on the M Platform 1. Press Menu on the 9734 HHT and scroll to Util. Scroll to the baud rate setting and

set the baud rate to 96007E1 and press Enter.

2. Press Menu and scroll to “Terminal:9732”. Use the right arrow to go to “Terminal:9733” and press Enter.

3. Press Menu and the display will now be ready to communicate with the M platform.
