Social & Environmental Issues
Aircraft regulationPortable electronics requirement (noise, heat ..) Methanol toxicity (more toxic than ethanol)
"We don't think they (the IATA) are against methanol," said Toshiba spokeswoman Midori Suzuki."It's just that it will take some time to go through the bureaucratic process."
Many companies have not adequately considered legal regulations and the time taken to implement changes, so they may well have fuel cells ready forthe market before the laws are changed, said Atakan Ozbek, a fuel cell industry analyst with U.S.-based technology research company ABI Research.
The rule is one factor that caused NEC Corp to delay the commercialization schedule of its first DMFC-powered laptop from this year to 2007.

Competitive Technology IssuesA Japanese research institute is working on a new type of capacitorwith a much larger energy storage capacity than conventional models. The capacitor Prof. Okamura developed with JEOL engineers last October features already 88 watt-hours of mass energy density per kilogram, about 10 times that of conventional capacitors. Unlike batteries, capacitors do not degrade over time and they charge much quicker. They could become a next-generation power supply that replaces batteries in the future.
