Public vs. Private vs. Hybrid Global corporate enterprise is at a crossroads. Making the correct decision on the appropriate cloud infrastructure based on benefits and drawbacks is paramount. Thus realizing which cloud computing environment best serves your global corporate enterprise must be determined.

The public cloud infrastructure is provisioned remotely, shared with other organizations, and owned by the service provider. Thanks to its capabilities for hosting data and apps, public cloud is best suited when a company is looking to have flexible pricing, scalability, and simplified cloud management. For reasons outlined in the report, remote accessing devices and DevOps testing is inadvisable in a public cloud.

A private cloud is solely accessible by your enterprise. It’s traditionally deployed in a hosted environment or behind a corporate firewall with dedicated resources. Whether it is hosted or on-premises, a private cloud is a good platform for remote accessing of devices and DevOps testing.

And as a contrast, a hybrid cloud environment combines both a public cloud service and private cloud service. By leveraging both services, an enterprise can experience the advantages of a public cloud, along with expanded security posture and control.

Through in-depth interviews with four leading practitioners in the space we dive into not only the benefits and hurdles of each cloud infrastructure but what can and can’t be done with each.

There is definitely not a one-size-fits all solution. Organizations need to analyze what solution works best for them based on value and risk to their business. There are many advantages of utilizing the public cloud for example reduced IT costs by eliminating the need to purchase hardware and space needed to house it:

• Employee work flexibility

• The cloud can increase the efficiency of an organization by giving staff more mobility

• Keep up with latest technology with cloud computing, organizations have the benefit of automatic updates ensuring servers are always upgraded with the most current version

Security and data removal once the contract is eliminated is a concern. You can retrieve your production data but try to get the multiple backups removed from the cloud and you will see it is almost impossible or cost prohibitive. Public clouds also make their money on volume not speed so latency of a pure public cloud is often a consideration.

What do you see as the advantages and disadvantages of relying on only a public cloud?

What do you see as the advantages and disadvantages of relying on only on the public cloud?

The disadvantage to public cloud (which must be taken into account before transitioning) is entrusting your organizations information assets to an outside company. While there is some risk in not being in-house, using a reputable provider can minimize risk and exposure of your organizations critical data.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of public cloud? The act of hosting in public cloud leads to a lower total cost of ownership if you’re taking everything into account. With public cloud, you get something that we’ve all wanted all of these years, which is standardized configurations and you just can’t achieve that in your own data center. I love the fact that the price drops continuously.

The cons are when you do have specialized computing you have to do, like graphics processing where you’re rendering 3D animated movies, you might need specialized hardware. If you’re doing your own AI developments, you might need specialized hardware. And of course there are always going to be situations where the data security is top priority. If you’re a military or an intelligence agency or not, you’ve got to continue to maintain data so you can control the physical access because you can’t outsource it, even to a trusted third party.

Richard Stiennon, IT Security Analyst, IT-Harvest

Due to the popularity of certain mobile devices, mobile engineers may face challenges when trying to access them in a public mobile device cloud for testing. For instance, an engineer may have to wait 30-minutes before running tests, simply because another organization or another tester is using the necessary device causing a decrease in productivity.

What is the benefit of private cloud? I see that as keeping the data in your private cloud, and keeping the application in the public cloud. So the customer-facing part of it; the web interface, the mobile application- are all hosted in the cloud. But then when there’s storing and handling private data like you would at a bank or any financial institution or public health organization, that data stays in your own private data center or cloud.

Richard Stiennon, IT Security Analyst, IT-Harvest

Mobile teams cannot deploy a mobile device cloud on-premises without buy in and cooperation from network and security teams. With an on-premises deployment for mobile app testing and DevOps, you’re not having to worry about vendor audits and PCI compliance, which is important if your organization deals with sensitive information and has specific rules and mandates.

Steve Orlando, Sr. Director of Product Marketing, Mobile Labs

What is the pure private cloud attractive to global corporate enterprise? IT security teams are uncomfortable with the security or the architects are uncomfortable with the networking required and the loss of control when they don’t own all their own circuits. The system administrators definitely aren’t comfortable with moving off of their own hardware and controlling all that. So it’s really internal resistance that is holding them back.

PRIVATE CLOUDWhat is the benefit of private cloud? Security is always a concern as you are only as secure as your weakest partner. Your application infrastructure in the private on premise data center must be compatible with the infrastructure of your other providers for integration ease of integration. A private cloud you control. The public cloud you do not, so you may be running different stacks.

Ed Toner, CIO, State of Nebraska

What further benefits do you have with private cloud? Test automation for mobile apps is popular because it improves speed. But, without a private mobile device cloud solution mobile development and QA teams cannot implement continuous testing into a DevOps continuous integration and delivery program. Without a device cloud solution, teams have to resort to plugging in devices into laptops and computers. With the device cloud, DevOps tools can use the devices hosted in the cloud for running tests, getting results and building the application for deployment to all devices which saves time and is more efficient when testing.

HYBRID CLOUDWhat are the big obstacles of a hybrid cloud? Scalability and security challenges can be the biggest obstacles an organization can face when switching to a hybrid cloud. When an organization is engineering their applications behind their firewall it is important to consider what will happen if the organization needs to scale up. Planning ahead to allow the application to utilize the public cloud as needed for increased capacity may be the solution. Having a clear and well-informed strategy will eliminate headaches in the future. Security is also critical for organizations, applications (and its data) must be secured regardless of location (hybrid and public cloud) failing to plan ahead can lead to additional cost, not to mention costly data breaches.

Richard Stiennon, IT Security Analyst, IT-Harvest

In the hybrid model for mobile device clouds, ideally organizations should go with private devices and extend to public devices when there is a need to increase capacity for a short time. With dedicated, private devices mobile engineers may still have to wait on devices to become available, but it’s less likely because engineers are not waiting for a hundred other users from other organizations without knowing what’s going on. With a private device cloud, your testers are in control and as soon as you want to debug and work with other teams, having access to real devices in a device cloud comes in handy for increased collaboration.

Steve Orlando, Sr. Director of Product Marketing, Mobile Labs

There are some architectural and technical and security reasons to maintain private cloud, as well as sharing between the public cloud vendors. For enterprises, they can’t be all in on Amazon because they concurrently have some assets in Microsoft absorbed, in particular office 365. No matter what you’re going to have at least Office 365 and some other cloud. There are some things that you have to keep in house, so we’re always going to end up with a hybrid and I think that’s a good thing. Certainly all sorts of tools coming making that easy to do to manage assets across clouds, applications, and data storage.

What are hybrid cloud pain points? The public clouds are trying to differentiate. That means that between whatever architecture you use in the private cloud won’t necessarily match the architecture and other clouds. You’re going to end up with multiple systems. But that’s being addressed. There are companies and services that tie the two together, so it doesn’t matter anymore where your applications reside. They can be in the private cloud or your data center or they can be in the public cloud and it’s transparent to you.

Richard Stiennon, IT Security Analyst, IT-Harvest

What is the best-case scenario for hybrid cloud? The primary benefit of a hybrid cloud is agility, which allows you to change direction quickly in a digital business environment. I have used a hybrid cloud to create a sandbox for new applications in a proof of concept scenario. This allowed me to pilot the application in the cloud infrastructure and when proven move to my on premise data center and eliminate the cloud pilot infrastructure.

MOBILE CLOUD TRANSFORMATIONHow does an organization determine your cloud infrastructure? Organizations should determine their strategy based on value and risk to the business. Leveraging a cloud deployment model will help the organization have a structured approach to assessing their applications.

Rizwan Jan, CIO, HJF

What else should be considered in mobile cloud transformation? When considering a development and testing infrastructure, a mobile device cloud to us just means access to real devices in a manner where it’s all managed for you. For enterprises that have both an on-premises and a public device cloud, it’s simply a matter of flexibility. But beyond flexibility, agility, speed and cost, teams should consider what they want to accomplish within a cloud infrastructure. For example, in a retail organization, Black Friday and Cyber Monday are important days for shopping via an app. Teams may need to ramp up on device access because they need extra testing during that busy time. In a hybrid model you may say, “Well, I can expand to a public offering, or I can expand to a month-to-month hosted offering. Especially if I’ve got it on-premises where I don’t need it all the time and then I can ramp it back down.” Or perhaps you just don’t want to manage your infrastructure on-premises, which would make a hosted device cloud ideal.

Steve Orlando, Sr. Director of Product Marketing, Mobile Labs

What is your advice for practitioners? First you have to focus on your identity and your directory services because you’re going to be authenticating people in hopefully a cloud-based identity service. From there, you’re going to be deciding what role access. Whether it is a private or the public cloud, I would plan for using the public cloud to essentially add elasticity to the private cloud because we can use public cloud for backup and recovery, for instance (or vice versa). Build that functionality in and then test it. In an ideal world, you could be swapping back and forth a couple times a day and it shouldn’t interrupt any of the services you’ve deployed.
