Mobil branded lubricants are backed by our uncompromising commitment to

Mobil lubricants are developed to typically exceed original equipment manufacturer (OEM) andindustry requirements. Leading edge technology and close OEM involvement enable ExxonMobilscientists to formulate Mobil oils and greases that help achieve peak machine performance.

Mobil products are supported by innovative programs and technical expertise to reduce the totalcost of lubrication. Ask your ExxonMobil field engineer how he or she can help you reduceexpenditures, improve revenues, and/or improve your process and asset management.

The 2004 edition of the MOBIL BRIEF PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONS book describes theextensive line of industrial, commercial vehicle, passenger vehicle and marine and aviationlubricants offered by ExxonMobil. This book consists of four sections:

DEXRON® and MERCON® are registered trademarks of the General Motors and FordMotor Company, respectively.

- Application Index of Mobil Products—Applications are listed alphabetically with the pagenumber of the respective product family(s).

• Lubricant information

- Brief Descriptions/Typical Characteristics of Mobil Products—Product families are listedalphabetically. The physical properties shown are characteristic of typical productionbatches. They are not manufacturing specifications. All are subject to change.

• Health and Safety Precautions—Many petroleum products pose potential human health, safety, and environmental hazards. We strongly urge you to read these general precautionsthoroughly and obtain the appropriate Material Safety Data Sheets.

HEALTH AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

43

The health and safety of people who handle and use Mobil products are of vital interest andconcern to us. Most Mobil products are regarded as generally safe. As with all petroleumproducts, however, excessive and prolonged contact or improper handling may result in adverseeffects. Below are general health and safety precautions for handling petroleum products. Formore details and product-specific information, we urge you to obtain and read carefully theMaterial Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for each Mobil product handled to ensure that employeesand users fully understand appropriate precautionary information relating to safe use. (See thediscussion of Material Safety Data Sheets on page 46.) Material Safety Data Sheets for Mobilproducts are available on the web at http://emmsds.ihspsl.com, by calling Fax-on-Demand at1-613-228-1467, by calling the MSDS Order Desk at 1-856-224-4644, or by contacting your localMobil representative.

ExxonMobil 24-Hour Emergency Line (Call Collect): 1-609-737-4411 in the U.S.

FIRE HAZARDS

Many petroleum products are highly volatile and flammable and must be handled with extremecaution to prevent fire or explosion. These include a few extra light viscosity lubricants and manysolvents. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has classifiedproducts with flash points below 37.8°C (100°F) as “flammable,” and products with flash points ator above 37.8°C and below 93.3°C (200°F) “combustible.” Products with flash points above93.3°C (200°F), when used for their intended purposes, are not classified as fire hazards inaccordance with OSHA (29 CFR 1910.1200).

Petroleum products should not be stored or handled near sources of ignition, such as heat, sparks, open flame, sources of static electricity, or near strong oxidants such as chlorine(including swimming pool chemicals) and concentrated oxygen.

WARNING: “Empty” containers retain residue (liquid and/or vapor) and can be dangerous. Donot pressurize, cut, weld, braze, solder, drill, grind, or expose such containers to heat, flame, sparks, static electricity, or other sources of ignition which may cause them to explode. Do notattempt to clean since residue is difficult to remove, and even a trace of remaining materialconstitutes an explosive hazard. “Empty” drums should be completely drained, properly bunged, and promptly returned to a drum reconditioner. All other containers should be disposed of in anenvironmentally safe manner and in accordance with governmental regulations.

HEALTH AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS(continued)

44

HEALTH HAZARDS

Health studies have shown that many petroleum hydrocarbons pose potential human health risksthat may vary from person to person. As a precaution, exposure to liquids, vapors, and mists ofpetroleum products should be minimized.

Inhalation—Health specialists have established maximum concentration levels for hydrocarbonvapors in air to which nearly all workers may be safely exposed. Where applicable, the levelsestablished for Mobil products are indicated in Material Safety Data Sheets. Prolonged breathingof hydrocarbon vapor concentrations in excess of prescribed l imits may result inlight-headedness, dizziness, and nausea. Inhalation of higher vapor concentrations may producedizziness, headache, respiratory tract irritation, and unconsciousness.

If a person is overcome by vapor, remove the individual from exposure at once and call aphysician. If breathing is irregular or has stopped, start resuscitation and administer oxygen, ifavailable.

To avoid inhalation of excessive concentrations of hydrocarbons, store and handle highly volatilepetroleum products such as solvents and solvent-cutback products only in open, well-ventilatedareas. In special cases of indoor handling, e.g., laboratories, products always should be handledunder vented hoods powered with explosion-proof motors.

Under certain circumstances, sulfur compounds in hot asphalt may form the toxic gas hydrogensulfide (H2S). Prolonged breathing of 50 to 100 ppm of H2S will produce eye and respiratory tractirritation, headache, nervousness, and nausea. At higher concentrations of H2S (700 to 1000ppm) only a few breaths of the gas may lead to unconsciousness and could be fatal. To avoidbreathing excessive concentrations of H2S, personnel should stand upwind of tank and bulktransport compartments containing asphalt, keep their faces at least two feet from compartmentopenings, and avoid breathing vapors when opening hatches and dome covers. Use respiratoryequipment where necessary.

Ingestion—As a general precaution, if petroleum products are ingested, keep the person calm.DO NOT induce vomiting. Call a physician immediately, identifying the product and approximateamount swallowed. While petroleum products are generally not highly toxic, solvents and lightoils with viscosities below 20.5 centistokes (100 SUS) at 37.8°C (100°F) pose a distinct hazard ofbeing aspirated into the lungs and causing chemical pneumonitis. This is a delayed effect, whichmay not occur for days. Because of the risk of accidental swallowing, petroleum products shouldnever be siphoned by mouth.

Skin Contact—Prolonged or repeated contact of petroleum oils, greases, or solvents with theskin can cause skin irritation and dermatitis. In case of skin contact, wash skin thoroughly withsoap and warm water. A waterless hand cleaner and a soft skin brush can be used to helpremove oils and greases. For certain products, dry-wiping is advised before using waterless handcleaner. Refer to the product MSDS for specific instructions and precautions. Promptly removepetroleum-soaked clothing and launder before re-use. If a petroleum product contacts the eyes, flush the eyes with fresh water until the irritation subsides; if irritation persists, call a physician. Ifprolonged contact with petroleum products is unavoidable, wear chemical-resistant gloves, apron, splash goggles, and other protective clothing.

HEALTH AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS(continued)

45

High-pressure injection of grease through the skin (a grease gun injury) can cause seriousdelayed damage to soft tissues. Hydraulic oil under high pressure can cause similar injury.Regardless of the size or appearance of the wound, a physician should be contactedimmediately, as treatment may require surgical intervention.

Chronic Health Effects—Although not the case with many highly or well refined petroleum oils, studies with laboratory animals have shown that prolonged exposure to certain petroleumproducts can cause cancer and other chronic health effects. Some petroleum oils and distillateshave caused skin cancer in mice following skin painting tests over the animals’ lifetime. In similartests, used motor oil also has caused skin cancer. Carefully check the product MSDS for suchwarning information. Inhalation of the vapors of most non-aromatic solvents has been shown tocause kidney damage in male rats. The normal hexane (n-hexane) component of hexane solventis known to cause a form of motor nerve damage called peripheral polyneuropathy in humans.

ADDITIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS

You can protect yourself from petroleum-related hazards by exercising care and common sensein the handling of petroleum products. Appropriate engineering controls, work practices, andpersonal protection should be used to minimize skin contact and to keep exposure by inhalationas far below the recommended occupational exposure limit as is reasonably practical.

Additional important health and safety information on any Mobil product is provided in the MobilMaterial Safety Data Sheet, available on the web at http://emmsds.ihspsl.com, by calling Fax-on-Demand at 1-613-228-1467, by calling the MSDS Order Desk at 1-856-224-4644, or bycontacting your local Mobil representative.

MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS (MSDSs)

46

Why Is a Material Safety Data Sheet Important to You?

Many petroleum products carry inherent health, environmental, and safety hazards. Carefulattention to the precautions and emergency procedures outlined in the appropriate MaterialSafety Data Sheet (MSDS) can protect you and your co-workers from these risks.

What Is an MSDS?

An MSDS is a publication designed to provide the user of a Mobil petroleum product withdetailed, comprehensive, and up-to-date health and safety information relating to that product. There is an individual MSDS for each Mobil product. The MSDS information is based onrequirements of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Regulation 29 CFR1910.1200, and the data presented are consistent with OSHA guidelines for informationalcontent. These data are derived from various sources, including Mobil testing laboratories, independent research organizations, and raw material suppliers.

What Kind of Information Does an MSDS Provide?

An MSDS typically contains the following types of information:

• Physical data on the product (e.g., boiling range, vapor pressure)

• The nature and degree of health, environmental, and safety hazards associated with theproduct

• Precautionary guidelines for proper and safe handling of the product in order to avoid fire, explosion, and acute and chronic health hazards

• Emergency procedures in the event of fire, spill, or excessive exposure to the product by skincontact, ingestion, or inhalation

Many kinds of chemical additive agents are used in the manufacture of high-quality oils. They are either single-purposematerials or multipurpose materials. Listed below are descriptions of some commonly used additive types.

Adhesive AgentThe tacky, stringy materials which help form and retain uniform films on metal surfaces.

Antiwear AgentSuch materials adsorb or concentrate on metal surfaces to form films which minimize the direct metal-to-metal contact. The name applies to materials which enhance the antiwear characteristics of petroleum oils to permit loadings of doubleor triple that which can be handled by straight petroleum oils. These materials are nonstaining and noncorrosive.

DefoamantWhen added to fluids, defoamants will promote rapid breakup of foam bubbles by weakening the oil films between thefoam bubbles.

DemulsifierAssists the natural ability of the oil to separate rapidly from water; helps inhibit rust..

DetergentWhen added to oils, these neutral-to-overbased (high alkalinity), metallic detergents which carry extra neutralization andcleanliness power, can reduce the level of acidic materials generated when burning high-sulfur fuel, and help keep theengine clean.

DispersantSuspends organic deterioration products in the lubricant to minimize their precipitation as harmful deposits.

Extreme Pressure AgentThese materials are more active than antiwear agents. They react with metal surfaces to form relatively oil insolublesurface films which reduce friction, control wear and prevent surface damage which could result from heavy loads and/orhigh temperatures. Such materials are used, for example, in the Mobilgear 600 Series oils. Automotive hypoid gearsrequire lubricants which contain very active extreme pressure agents.

Friction ModifierA general category of materials that are used to alter the frictional characteristics of a lubricant. They may be used toincrease the lubricity or slipperiness where coefficient of friction may be important and to improve fuel economy/energyconservation. They may be used to reduce stick-slip or chatter in wet clutch applications.

Oxidation Inhibitor

• Peroxide decomposers destroy the precursor of radical sources by converting the peroxides into harmlesscompounds.

• Chain stoppers interrupt the chain reaction between oxygen and hydrocarbon radicals to prevent or slow theformation of acidic materials, propagated materials, and sludges.

• Metal deactivators retard the oxidation-promoting catalytic effect of metals in a lubricating system. The metalsurfaces or particles are covered by the agent which acts as a barrier to prevent the catalytic effect. The mostcatalytically active metal is copper; the second is lead, and the third is iron.

Some additive agents function as chain stoppers, peroxide decomposers, and/or metal deactivators.

Pour Point DepressantImproves the low-temperature fluidity of mineral oils and reduces wax formation at low temperatures.

Rust InhibitorThe primary guide to rust inhibition is the ASTM D 665 Rust Test, which is a pass/fail test. Most lubricating oils containrust inhibitors to enhance their ability to minimize rusting.

SpectographyA lab test method that measures the concentration of metallic particles smaller than ten microns.

Viscosity Index ImproverWhen added to oils, these high-molecular-weight polymers improve the viscosity index by coiling and uncoiling inresponse to temperature. They do not affect the pour point at low temperature while providing sufficient viscosity at hightemperature.

* Oils marked “Comp” are compounded with 3% to 10% fatty or synthetic fatty oils.** Residual compounds-diluent type, commonly known as solvent cutbacks, are heavy oils containing a volatile, non-flammable diluent for east of application.

The diluent evaporates leaving a thick film of lubricant on the gear teeth. Viscosities listed are for the base compound without diluent.*** Viscosities of AGMA Lubricant Number 13 and above are specified at 100°C (210°F) as measurement of viscosities of these heavy lubricants at 40°C

(100°F) would not be practical.

VISCOSITY CLASSIFICATION EQUIVALENTS

ISO VISCOSITY CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM

Many petroleum products are graded according to the ISO Viscosity Classification System, approved by the International Standards Organization (ISO). Each ISO viscosity grade numbercorresponds to the mid-point of a viscosity range expressed in centistokes (cSt) at 40°C. Forexample, a lubricant with an ISO grade of 32 has a viscosity within the range of 28.8–35.2, themidpoint of which is 32.

Rule-of-Thumb: The comparable ISO grade of a given product whose viscosity in SUS at 100°Fis known can be determined by using the following conversion formula:

SUS @ 100°F ÷ 5 =̃cSt @ 40°C

UNDERSTANDING OIL ANALYSIS

VISCOSITYProbably the most important single property of a lubricating oil. It is a major factor in the development of the load carryingability of an oil. It is defined as resistance to flow at 40 degrees Centigrade and typically reported in Centistokes (cSt).

WEAR METALSThe presence of these metals can indicate a wear problem on a microscopic level before the problem can be detected byconventional means. The existence of a wear problem is determined not only by absolute values of metals, but moreimportantly by a relative increase or trend in one or more of these metals.

METAL SOURCESIron Cylinders, Gears, Rings, Crankshafts, Liners, Bearings, RustChromium Rings, Bearing and Liner PlatingLead Bearing OverlaysCopper Hydraulic Pumps, Bearing Cages, Bushings, Bronze ComponentsTin Bearing Plating, CompressorsAluminum Pistons, Bearing and Pump, Blower and Compressor ImpellersNickel ValvesSilver Bearing and Bushing PlatingManganese Trace Element in Gas Turbine Components

CONTAMINANTSThese elements can be an indicator of contamination. The combination of contaminant and wear metals can indicate aharmful machine operating condition.
