The team behind Reel Festivals (Reel Syria, Reel Iraq and Reel Afghanistan) are ushering in in a new era as they shed their 'Reel' and become 'Highlight Arts'. To celebrate, they are hosting a launch event from 7.30pm on 2 October, at the Scottish Storytelling Centre on Edinburgh's Royal Mile, featuring live music, film and poetry with collborators old and new including Shooglenifty, Krystelle Bamford, singer Kaela Ewan, Syrian writer Golan Haji, DJ Dolphin Boy plus films by director Roxana Vilk and some specially curated Arctic shorts. Be part of Big Burns Supper 2015

Your Chance to Entertain the World at Europe’s Largest Winter Fringe Festival Dumfries : 23-31 January : http://2014.bigburnssupper.com/

Now in its fourth year, Big Burns Supper in Dumfries is an amazing mix of art forms and entertainments of every scale. The line-up ranges from absolute beginners and emerging talent to established performers and famous names – like Fred MacAulay and Big Country in 2014. Big Burns Supper is Dumfries’s newest festival of contemporary arts and last year attracted an audience of 20,000. Graham Main, festival founder and director, said: “We are looking for acts of every size, shape and art form to come to Dumfries and be a part of Big Burns Supper 2015. “Whether you aim to fill a hall or hold an intimate jamming session in a pub, there are great venues and audiences keen to enjoy entertainment of every kind. “While the festival is wrapped round the Bard’s birthday, performances don’t need to have any connection with Robert Burns, they just have to be in the spirit of an event which is all about coming together with friends, family and visitors.” Big Burns Supper is amazingly diverse with everything from children’s entertainment featuring the delightful Hamish the Haggis, through to pop and rock bands, dance, theatre and Le Haggis, Scotland’s sexiest cabaret. For 2015 the organisers are hoping to see a really strong representation of traditional and classical music. Graham said: “The feedback we get shows there’s a tremendous appetite for traditional and classical music at the festival and this is something we really want to build on.” This year saw groups such as Caileag, the Gallovidians and the Cairn String Quartet get a tremendous reception. Performers wishing to register for Big Burns Supper 2015 can do so online at www.bigburnssupper.submittable.com - It’s free to register.

Headline acts will be announced later this year but a centrepiece of Big Burns Supper 2015 will be a huge and fabulously lit street carnival on January 25th to mark the UNESCO Year of Light. There will also be a welcome return for the Spiegeltent – a fabulously atmospheric temporary venue lined with mirrors. The festival is made possible by support from many organisations including Creative Scotland, Homecoming Scotland, Winter Festivals Burns Night, 8020 and Dumfries and Galloway Council. http://2014.bigburnssupper.com/ https://twitter.com/bigburnssupper www.facebook.com/BigBurnsSupper

FESTIVALS THIS WEEK!

This is the eighth year for the impressive Glasgow Americana Festival, which runs until Sunday 5 October. GA director, Kevin Morris said: “The festival is a really top-class line-up with acts set to please lots of music fans. It’s pleasing that these artistes think so highly of Glasgow Americana and are so keen to come to the city, either for the first time or for a repeat visit.”

Below are a couple of highlights and the festival's programme but please visit the website for a full run down. You can get a value for money 'festival pass' or individual tickets for specific gigs. If you've not dipped your toe in the Americana water before at the very least get along for a lazy Sunday afternoon at the 'Hazy Americana' show at the CCA.

HAZY AMERICANA ..... Sunday 5 October Matinee Show - The CCA Glasgow 0141 352 4900 - Glasgow Americana are delighted to be once again to be teaming up with the Hazy Recollections team to bring you a first class afternoon of music. Hazy Recollections head honcho FINDLAY NAPIER will be joined by an array of talent from home and abroad. Findlay will sing some of his own real treat, energetic material, join in with others on the bill, and generally run the sparkling show as at previous festivals. New Jersey singer/songwriter ANTHONY D’AMATO makes a welcome return to Glasgow. And the extra good news is that he’s heading to Glasgow with a new album release in tow, “The Shipwreck From the Shore.” Anthony impressed Glasgow audiences on previous visits opening up for Gretchen Peters and Israel Nash Gripka. THE JELLYMAN'S DAUGHTER is an Edinburgh-based duo featuring Emily Kelly on guitar and Graham Coe on cello, with vocal harmonies that share a unique affinity and create equal amounts of intimacy and excitement in their songs. Fans of Crooked Still will love these guys. This year’s winners of The Danny Kyle Stage at Celtic Connections, THE CHAPLINS are Jill (lead vocals, guitar, banjo, ukulele, harmonica), Lisa (drums, percussion, vocals, ukulele) and John

(double bass, vocals). With their timeless feel, The Chaplins will appeal to all - eight or eighty you will find yourself mesmerised by this distinctive trio. Singer-Songwriter GENESEE is an artist that draws you into her world through songs that approach you sideways but always end up written on your face. An enthusiastic people watcher; her songs and poems tell stories of the wayward souls of the great, grey land of Scotland of where she currently resides, weaving through its eclectic mix of culture and opportunity.

STURGILL ON THE RISE ..... What a year Sturgill Simpson is having, recent appearances on David Letterman, Conan O’Brien and Later With Jools have really seen his stock rising. Sturgill just scooped the Emerging Artist Of The Year Award at a glitzy bash for the Americana Music Association Award on Wednesday 17 September. Sturgill & His Band will bring Glasgow Americana to a close on Sunday 5 October in Oran Mor. Opening the show will be local lad DANIEL MEADE.

MARY GAUTHIER ..... Always popular in Glasgow, Mary Gauthier plays the Friday Night show at St Andrew’s In The Square with BEN GLOVER. The show is selling extremely well and we advise you purchase a ticket sooner rather than later.
