LOOPALLU’S SOLD OUT 10th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

Ullapool : 26-27 September : www.loopallu.co.uk

The team behind Loopallu are overwhelmed and flattered to announce the festival has SOLD OUT before even the first acts have been announced! Testament to the wonderful legion of fans the festival has lovingly built over the ten years. Loopallu takes place in the west coast village of Ullapool on Friday 26th and Saturday 27th September 2014 and doubles the population of the village for the weekend. As well as the usual eclectic line up of acts appearing at the festival big top and the fringe events after hours in the villages pubs, the festival will again provide a selection of fine food and drink from around the Highlands as well as the usual warm Ullapool welcome. To kick those celebrations off organisers are delighted to announce the first batch of acts joining them, and with a mix of new names, and previous festival favourites, there’s something for everyone whose been lucky enough to get a ticket. Leading the announcements are Britpop legends SHED SEVEN. Having had sixteen consecutive Top Forty UK hits (including, Chasing Rainbows, Going for Gold & Disco Down), with ten appearances on Top of the Pops and a fan base as big & loyal as Shed Sevens’ is a testament to their ‘live’ performances and superb songs. Two decades on, and the band are playing packed shows across the country, indeed, selling more tickets now than they’ve ever done. Having headlined the very first Loopallu ten years ago, we are proud to be welcoming back one of the most influential punk bands of the 1970's, THE UNDERTONES. Having written John Peel's favourite song of all time, the punk

anthem Teenage Kicks, they will yet again prove to be one of the weekends highlights. Bringing their 'Acoustic & Unplugged' show North, Loopallu’s most requested act ALABAMA 3, strip back to give a new dimension to the songs made famous by the band. This isn’t acid house music, this is country/gospel/delta blues, but played with a rhythm you’ve still got to dance to. After much pleading by the band, PUBLIC SERVICE BROADACSTING return with their uniquely spell-binding live AV Transmissions. PSB weave samples from old public information films, archive footage and propaganda material around live drums, guitar, banjo and electronics as they teach the lessons of the past through the music of the future. Other acts confirmed to appear over the weekend include NME endorsed future stars NEON WALTZ, Award winning, and tipped Australian singer-songwriter KIM CHURCHILL who’s fresh from supporting Billy Bragg in his Tooth & Nail tour; rising Scottish indie band VIGO THIEVES; BBC Radio 2's Ones to Watch for 2014 and local heroes HUNTER & THE BEAR; Dundee's MODEL AEROPLANES who have been winning audiences at festivals all summer; Barra’s finest VATERSAY BOYS; then would Loopallu be complete without one of our biggest supporters 6Music/Radio 2's MARK RADCLIFFE who brings his new band THE FOES to Ullapool in the duel role of band and local ale aficionados. New for this year, we’re pleased to have teamed up with Ullapool Book Festival to present Literally Literary, a celebration of writing which includes bestselling author Christopher

Brookmyre; Katie Morag creator Mairi Hedderwick; writer, musician and journalist Doug Johnstone; Loopallu regular, and BBC presenter Vic Galloway chats about his debut novel and Aidan Moffat better known as the frontman for Arab Strap, and now children's author. ‘Everything a little festival should be. Friendly, well organised, great music, good beer and a magnificent location. Every time I go, and there have been quite a few, I am torn between telling people how great it is, and wanting to keep it a secret because it's so special. Cheers Robert and Helen and all at Loopallu. Here's to the next ten years! - Mark Radcliffe, sitting in Cheshire and counting down the days before we head North again.' Mark Radcliffe, 6Music & Radio 2 'They said it couldn’t be done, a festival in the North West of Scotland , in late September… and here we are ten years later. It never ceases to amaze me how people have taken Loopallu to their hearts. Whether they’ve walked a few hundred yards to get here or flown around the globe. That goes for the bands too, looking back we’ve managed to attract everyone from Paolo Nutini to Mumford & Sons, Jake Bugg to Franz Ferdinand. It can’t help but make you smile. To have sold out this year before announcing a single act is testament to fact people know they’ll have a great time whoever’s playing. Roll on our 20th birthday.' 'Music Plus' Artists who showcased at Belladrum Festival this summer

Five young Highland artists, aged 14-19 years old, were selected by national youth project 'Music Plus' to perform on the Free Range and Mothers Ruin stages at this year’s Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival - and for each artist this was their debut festival performance. Ruth Gillies and Hannah Finlayson are singer songwriters from Inverness and Balloch respectively, Darren Hamilton and Louis Slorach are DJ / producers, also from Inverness and Jacob & Rory Green are two brothers from Strontian in Lochaber. Speaking about the performance slots at Belladrum, Sace Lockhart, Project Manager for Music Plus said: “The calibre of talent on offer from our young Highland musicians who played at Belladrum is fantastic and they represent the range of genres Music Plus supports; whether you are a singer songwriter or an aspiring DJ. Music Plus is a mentoring project created by the Scottish Music Centre that is open to anyone aged 14-19 years old and living in Scotland. Whether you stay in Glasgow, Dumfries, Strontian or Inverness, Music Plus can provide one-to-one advice and practical workshops, delivered by a large network of music industry professionals." "We cover everything from production and recording techniques, marketing and promotion, to performance and song-writing advice, delivered by established musicians like Rachel Sermanni, Findlay Napier and Louis Abbot from Admiral Fallow. Our Highland Coordinator is Robbie Dunsmore from Dingwall who has been instrumental in helping us support young Highland musicians since the project launched in 2009 and most recently by helping secure these showcases at Belladrum for Music Plus artists.” The Music Plus artists at Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival were ..... JACOB & RORY GREEN https://soundcloud.com/jacob-and-rory-green Jacob & Rory Green are two brothers aged 17 and 20 from Strontian in Lochaber. They write

songs that interweave indie music with their traditional roots, giving a more youthful and interesting slant on the Trad/Folk genre. The duo use traditional instruments like accordion, mandolin and violin and have performed seven shows since first participating in Music Plus. Jacob Green commented: “Music Plus gave us both confidence and belief in what we were doing. Everything we said was listened to and we were given truthful and valuable advice that was specific to the music the two of us were trying to make. If we hadn't worked with Music Plus we definitely wouldn't be getting all the gigs or the festival slots we have lined up. We are truly grateful for all the time, help and attention they have given us and for the wonderful opportunity to play at Belladrum, which will be our first ever festival.” Fresh from their debut festival performance at Belladrum, Rory & Jacob will perform at Doune The Rabbit Hole in Stirling, Live @ Troon and Bowfest Festival in Inveraray. HANNAH FINLAYSON https://soundcloud.com/hannahfinlaysonmusic

Hannah Finlayson is a 17 year old singer songwriter from Balloch, who draws inspiration from a range of musical influences. To date, Hannah has performed at the Glachbeg Folk House, the Greenhouse in Dingwall and Carnivale at The Bothy; a weekly night on the third floor of Hootananny running throughout the summer. After Belladrum, Hannah is playing at the North Hop Festival in Eden Court from 29-30 August. Hannah said: “I have been going to Belladrum every year since I was 10. It has always been a dream of mine to play at the festival and I am very thankful for this opportunity. Music Plus has been a great experience for me. I am very thankful for the advice and mentoring given to me by Peter

Noble of UHI who has given me more confidence in my approach to song writing, and also to Robbie Dunsmore for organising the sessions. I also took part in a workshop with Rachel Sermanni which was very interesting and useful, especially from someone who has achieved so much.’ LOUIS SLORACH https://soundcloud.com/slorbob

Louis Slorach is a 17 year old DJ / producer from Inverness who also plays guitar and keyboards. He’s already secured several support slots through The Ironworks venue, with his favourite being Marc Kinchen (MK – legendary Detroit House producer), who gave him advice on production and the music business in general. His summer job is also quite exciting; he is producing soundtrack music for an online gaming studio called Hunted Cow, which is based in Elgin, Moray. Louis said: “I’ve been to the Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival every year since it started in 2004, so getting a gig there this year is a real thrill. I’ve had a lot of help and encouragement from Robbie Dunsmore (aka Robotone) who runs the Music Plus program here in the Highlands. Robbie is an old school analogue synth guy but also right up to date with digital tech, and always happy to answer questions.” DARREN HAMILTON https://soundcloud.com/darrenhamilton-2

Darren Hamilton is a 19 year old House DJ from Inverness. A breakthrough moment in his career

was winning a SoundClash DJ competition that earned him a support slot alongside Glasgow Sub Club and iAM resident Kappa. Following on from this, the Karma Lounge in Inverness offered Darren an opening resident spot at the club throughout the summer. Speaking about the opportunity to play at Belladrum, Darren enthused, “I’m really excited about it, this is the first time I’ll have played at a festival and to be honest, I couldn’t be happier that it’s Belladrum. It has got such a great reputation here so it’s a massive opportunity for me to showcase what I’ve learnt with Music Plus. The stage that I’m playing is the Mothers Ruin, it’s where all of the best local DJ’s play throughout the weekend.” RUTH GILLIES https://soundcloud.com/ruth-gillies

Ruth Gillies is an 18 year old singer songwriter with a folk/country twist. Ruth said: “Music Plus has benefited me in many ways; it has given me opportunities to perform and insight into how music production works. I've also had the opportunity to co-write which was a really good experience, something I’ve never done but always wanted to try. On top of all that, they've given me really great advice and it's really amazing to see how understanding and respectful they are towards all of the Music Plus members. As a teenager who wants to pursue a career in music it’s quite hard to be taken seriously by people and I end up getting comments like ‘it’s not a very reliable career path’ and ‘what will you do if it doesn't work out?’ But the people at Music Plus aren't like that at all and they've really helped restore my confidence in my music.”

Chemikal Underground will bring its inaugural The East End Social programme to a close with The East End Social’s ‘Last Big Weekend’: a spectacular big top concert held over two days within the leafy environs of Glasgow's Richmond Park.

Taking place on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 August, this ambitious double header - an official Culture 2014 event and part of Homecoming Scotland 2014 - looks set to be the event of the summer as well as a fitting climax for The East End Social and Culture 2014.

Glasgow’s post-rock trailblazers Mogwai will headline Saturday’s line up while Sunday’s proceedings (curated by legendary club night Optimo and fellow party-specialists Numbers) will be helmed by Hudson Mohawke, one of the most exciting DJs and record producers to emerge from Scotland in the last ten years.

Kicking off at 1pm and continuing until 11pm, The East End Social’s Last Big Weekend will take place in a marquee erected within the cosy environs of Glasgow’s Richmond Park. Nestled just south of the River Clyde adjacent to Shawfield Stadium, Richmond Park is 5 minutes walk from Dalmarnock Station and 10 minutes walk from Bridgeton Station.

Trad on the Tyne's packed programme for Haddington's annual trad musical feast

Haddington : 29-31 August : www.tradonthetyne.com

Haddington’s Trad on the Tyne festival has published its final programme, with the headline acts – Karine Polwart, Blazin’ Fiddles, the Friel Sisters (in the Music to Dine For evening), and Alex Hodgson – being joined on the bill by the Victorian Trout Conspiracy and dynamic duo Rachel Gray and Amy Low. A ticket hotline - 07511 515 049 - has also been opened, while there’s again a strong programme of family entertainment, including a re-enactment group, and other activities. An impressive list of workshops sees top musicians from the traditional music scene coming to the festival. Mairi Campbell will be taking two workshops this year – in singing and in step dancing - while David Francis is running a guitar workshop and Nigel Gatherer will take a mixed instruments class. “We have been very fortunate in being able to bring some amazing musicians and teachers to Haddington for this year’s Trad on the Tyne, including possibly the finest singer/songwriter in the land – Karine Polwart – and the Folk Band of the Year – Blazin’ Fiddles,” said Ian Green, honorary president of the festival. “As ever, the programme offers people of all ages the chance both to enjoy listening to great music and to take part in plenty of other activities, mainly but not only music-related. “In these challenging times, we’d also like to thank our sponsors, who have made the whole event possible. Now, thanks to them and our volunteers – that is, everyone who has organised this event – we are looking forward to welcoming folk from Haddington, elsewhere in East Lothian, and further afield to Trad on the Tyne 2014. We very much hope that they will see what

a great place Haddington is and that they enjoy the festival.” Perhaps one of the most intriguing workshops this year is in African dance, with Ghanaian dancer Adie Elias Baako of the Akrowa Dance Ensemble running a class on the Sunday. This year’s come-and-try-an-instrument classes include chanter, ukulele, moothie, clarsach and percussion. With the event hosted by Haddington Pipe Band, in association with the Waterloo Bistro, piping also features heavily, with Haddington Pipe Band parading through the town before performing at the Haugh (the festival’s main home for the weekend) on the Saturday and pipers and drummers from Haddington, North Berwick, Preston Lodge, Strathearn and Knox Academy bands playing together in a massed pipes and drums performance on the Sunday afternoon. Two local bars – the Golf and the Waterside - will host late-night sessions for anyone wanting to come along and play or sing, while the Open Stage on the Saturday offers the opportunity to play (or just sit back and enjoy the music). A ‘slow session’, led by Nigel Gatherer, will also be on offer for people at all levels, including early stages, to come together and play easy tunes. For children, as well as the come-and-try classes, there’s storytelling by Heather Yule in the beautiful yurt, pony rides, face painting, a bouncy castle, sand bottling, and a balloon man. New to the programme this year is a re-

enactment group. The Sealed Knot – Manus O’Cahan’s Regiment will be at the Haugh on both Saturday and Sunday, complete with weapons and clothing, to show people how life was in the 17th century. Another big attraction is top magician Gary James, who will be entertaining youngsters on the Sunday morning. Last year’s Craft Tent was a great success and this will again be open to visitors at this year’s festival, with a fine array of stallholders, while the Waterloo will be hosting a brunch and acoustic music session on the Sunday morning. The full programme is on the festival website and tickets are available online, via the hotline (07511 515 049), or over the counter at Joe Forte Sports, 65 High Street, or the Waterloo Bistro, Poldrate, Haddington. www.tradonthetyne.com https://twitter.com/TradontheTyne www.facebook.com/TradontheTyne

In its last few years, the Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival has enjoyed considerable growth, and this year has topped it all with a 40% increase on box office ticket sales from 2013. An artistically strong programme of concerts (over 140 in 10 days) and a range of new partnerships, including fellow Edinburgh festivals and international arts organisations, all contributed to the boost in figures. This was supported by a new website, a strong city centre presence at the Tron Kirk, which acts as an all-day hub for the duration of the Festival, and Carnival workshops at community centres across Edinburgh. Fiona Alexander, Producer of Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival said: “We are very pleased about the record success of the Festival this year, and it has set the benchmark for us. The 2014 programme presented several exciting Edinburgh debut performances and world premiere collaborations. It has been very well received by audiences and critics, and the artists were thrilled with the famously warm welcome of our Scottish audiences. “The Edinburgh Festival Carnival is also growing

from strength to strength. The new parade was an incredible sight on the Mound and the community participation was fantastic.” Brian Fallon, Chair of Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival, said: “This was a very successful year, packed with high quality performances, great atmosphere, and our highest audience numbers ever. Thanks to all of our supporters – funders, sponsors, audiences, volunteers, board, and staff.” Jazz & Blues Festival in Numbers: Box office figures increased by over 40% on 2013, exceeding £500k for the first time ever. Festival ticket sales were up to a record 31,000, a huge 15% increase from 2013. Attendance at free events – the Mardi Gras and Festival Carnival – estimated at 30,000, the highest draw of locals and visitors yet. Amongst the bands playing this year were Davina and The Vagabonds, a Festival discovery that became a sell-out act. Other artists who made their names were Christian Scott, Conal Fowkes, Ben Prestage, The Bratislava Hot Serenaders, Bad Bad Not Good, and The Rad Trads. A strong line-up of Scottish artists were central to the programme, including the edgy sounds of Fat Suit and Thunkfish and new traditionalists, the Gramophone Jass Band. The Scottish Expo programme, supported by the Scottish Government, presented Scottish musicians in partnership with international musicians in premiere concerts that delighted

audiences. And the Festival’s special productions, especially Dave Batchelor’s ‘Kaiser Bill Invented Jazz!’ and The Commonwealth Jazz Orchestra’s Oscar Peterson show, made strong artistic statements that received very positive response across the board. This year the Festival also got the Royal seal of approval! The Duke and Duchess of Rothesay were delighted with their first ever visit to the Jazz & Blues Festival. This included a stop at the Festival’s Napier University Summer School, which culminated in a performance by Artscape’s Youth Band from the townships of Cape Town. Afterwards, Their Royal Highnesses joined Jools Holland for a breath-taking performance at the Tron Kirk by St Louis-born stride pianist, Stephanie Trick. The Festival Carnival was a big hit with around 25,000 people attending the new parade down The Mound and along Princes Street, and the performances in Princes Street Gardens. This year, the event extended into The Grassmarket, attracting a large audience there as well. With the sun shining, and over 500 performers from all over the world presenting high quality music, dance, circus and street theatre, the spectacle was widely regarded as the best yet. Festival favourite, The Mardi Gras, confounded the weather with a series of high-spirited performances by one of the best line-ups in its 25-year history. http://edinburghjazzfestival.com/ https://twitter.com/EdinburghJazz www.facebook.com/EdinburghJazzandBluesFestival

The 'Big Big BIG Sing' began at 8am and the crowd enjoyed the various Big Big Sing activities taking place throughout the Glasgow Green Live Zone including a Musicals’ Marathon at The Playhouse where participants could drop in and sing along to their favourite hits from well-known musicals, Big Big Sing’s Pied Piper and various Come and Try Sessions including Indian Singing, Beat Boxing and Gaelic Singing. Then Big Big Sing’s exuberant team of choirleaders, led by Stephen Deazley and Eugene Skeef took to the Main Stage, rousing the enthusiastic crowd to sing together as one huge choir. The positive spirit of Big Big Sing was clear to see in the crowd as they sang songs such as Amazing Grace and the beautiful Kenyan song, Kothbiro from the Big Big Commonwealth Songbook, curated especially for the project, as well as classics new and old such as Pharrell Williams’ Happy and Bill Withers’ Lean On Me. Also taking to the stage were renowned beat boxers Jason Singh

and Bellatrix, Indian singer and composer Ranjana Ghatak, the fantastic Soul Nation Choir and the winners of Big Big Sing’s Schools’ Songwriting Competition Loch Primary School - who performed their song, inspired by Glasgow 2014, Jump, Swim, Run - and Shannon McLean, Evelyn Martin and Lucy Howie from Balfron High School, who performed their composition Life’s a Game. Both acts were accompanied by a full band and backing chorus and were helped along by the enthusiastic crowd gathered in Glasgow Green. The afternoon’s performance concluded with a unique mash-up of music from throughout the day, merging singing styles and traditions in a spectacular finale. But the fun didn’t stop there, the Main Stage was then transformed into an open air cinema, for a one-off sing-a-long screening of Singin’ in the Rain! Big Big BIG Sing attendee, Mary McTigue from Glasgow choir Eastend Voices said: “We’ve been to a few Big Big Sing events before and it feels as though they’ve all been leading up to today, the atmosphere is wonderful and so welcoming for everyone who has come to Glasgow from across the Commonwealth. It’s absolutely

fantastic!” Big Big Sing is an initiative of Glasgow UNESCO City of Music, and has been one of the highlights of the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme. The project is supported by the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme, Glasgow UNESCO City of Music and the Spirit of 2012 Trust (Spirit) (set up by an endowment by the Big Lottery Fund) and strives to continue to improve the UK’s health, happiness and well-being through singing. To support their cause, sign up to Big Big Sing’s Singing Matters Petition at www.bigbigsing.org/petition and pledge your support to Big Big Sing’ s on-going UK-wide singing strategy, do it now! The Big Big Sing’s online singing portal – www.bigbigsing.org – provides a wealth of materials and information for those looking to take up singing. The site includes a

searchable database of choirs, the Big Big Commonwealth Songbook with lots of learning and teaching resources, a guide on how to set up your own choir, a playlist of performances by choirs and singers from around the Commonwealth and details on all forthcoming Big Big Sing events. www.bigbigsing.org www.facebook.com/BigBigSing https://twitter.com/BigBigSing

Glasgow's Big Big Sing brought thousands together in song at Glasgow Green during hugely successful Big Big Big Sing Day
