This promises to be a culturally relevant and encompassing day with games spanning from traditional to forward pressing in an afternoon full of fun, family/community and a soup cook-off! All ages are invited. Free admission. Thrilling and traditional Moccasin games will be offered, led by knowledgeable community representatives. This ancient, rambunctious game has been played from the time of village life where it required the use of four moccasins or vamps, a stick and a pebble. The players were divided into two teams. On their turn, each team would have someone slyly hide the pebble beneath one of the moccasins. The opposing team would use a stick to turn over each moccasin or vamp in search of the pebble. A singer on each team would have the job of scoffing at the opponent’s team while cheering their own team to victory. Cards Against Colonialism is a card game that was developed by Avery Old Coyote. Avery is from the Flathead Resevation and was the Lead Game Developer of this game from NativeTeaching Aids, which develops and creates educational and entertainment materials focusing on Indigenous language, history and culture. As Avery played another party card game, Cards Against Humanity, a card with the words “smallpox blankets” was played. Avery felt the other players had looked to him for permission to laugh and this got him thinking that perhaps a game designed for Indigenous people with cards that mentioned other sensitive or stereotypical topics might give an opportunity to look at and perhaps laugh at things that had previously been used to demean or scorn. “Our ability to laugh at ourselves is what I think got us this far. Our ability to adapt, and our ability to survive, is largely credited to that humour,” Avery expressed. 1 Thunderbird Strike (2017) is a 2D video game designed and created by Elizabeth LaPensée, PhD. Dr. LaPensée is an award-winning designer, writer, artist, researcher and Assistant Professor at Michigan State University. Ziibiwing was very pleased to be allowed to use her wonderful art work, “The Water Carries Her, She Carries the Water, 2016,“ on promotions for a previous changing exhibit entitled “Standing Rock Solid.” More of Dr. LaPensée’s work can be viewed on her website at http://www.elizabethlapensee.com/#/art/. In this game the players fly “as a thunderbird protecting Turtle Island with searing lightning against the snake that threatens to swallow the lands and waters whole.” 2 The game raises awareness about the oil industry and advocates for the removal of the Enbridge Line 5 pipeline in the Great Lakes. Thunderbird Strike is free to play online at www. thunderbirdstrike.com/about Dr. LaPensée will be here on Anishinabe Games Day to introduce her game. There will also be a Thunderbird Strike Tournament. Start practicing if you haven’t already! Prizes will be awarded. Last, but certainly not least, there will be a Crockpot Soup Cook-Off!
