ACRONYMSBy using each first letter from a group of

words to form a new word

Particularly useful when remembering words in a specified order

Example: NBA (National Basketball Associations), LASER (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation)

Page 5: Mnemonic Techniques

SENTENCES/ACROSTICSUse the first letter of each word you are trying to

remember to make a sentence

Examples:My Very Educated Mother Just Sold U Nine Pizza

(for naming planets in order from Sun)Michael Jackson Kena Halau Balik India Utara

(Rainbow’s colors)My Dear Aunt Sally (mathematical order of

RHYMES & SONGSRhythm, repetition, melody, and rhyme can

METHOD OF LOCIUse to remember speeches, and it combines

the use of organization, visual memory, and association

Example: determined your path, imagine yourself walking along it, and identify specific landmarks that you will pass as well as number of landmarks you choose will depend on the number of things you want to remember

Page 8: Mnemonic Techniques

CHUNKINGGenerally used when remembering numbers

Based on the idea that short-term memory is limited in the number of things that can be contained

A person can remember 7 (plus or minus 2) "items" in short-term memory

Example: 64831996 - breaks the group into a smaller number of "chunks"

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT It may not be a mnemonic, but repeating is

still a great memory aid

Break up the information into small bits that you can learn, one step at a time
