MNEMONIC DESIGN PROJECT
Graduation Project Presentation

I l faut commencer à perdre la mémoire,

Alzheimer’s disease involves a gradual deterioration of brain cells and leads to increased functional impairement over a brief span of years - on an average 8. The most obvious symptom of Alzheimer’s disease is dementia, which is an impairment of the brain’s intellectual functions, including failing memory and concentration, impaired orientation skills and language troubles. We normally refer to these symptoms as the four A - which stands for amnesia, agnosia, aphasia and apraxia.People living with dementia often exhibit a range of disabilities — there’s no one set of specific symptoms. Each case is diverse, that is to say that the disease does not effect patients with the same rhythm and in the same way. However, a schematic line of its evolution can be generally established.
As the disease progresses, patients and their families experience how dementia comes between them and makes interactions increasingly difficult. Day after day, patients become completely reliant on their [natural] caregivers in their daily activities. They seem lost in another time dimension to which we do not have acces. We estimate that we spent over two months in the Orbe department of the Charles Foix hospital in Ivry-sur-Seine. This center hosts around fifty people in an advanced stage of the disease, with an average age of 75. Patients spend the last years of their lives inside a structure which they will probably not remember. It is likely that they are able to remember it more after having pleasant experiences there thanks to better-designed solutions.
