CAN YOU REALLY SAY THAT? A letter from Music Director Lawrence Rapchak

I’m sure you’ve noticed our slogan “The North Shore’s Most Exciting Orchestra,” and while we all know that taglines such as this are largely subjective, I am prepared to stand by this one as accurate and true. When our friend, Jim Kendros proposed “Most Exciting Orchestra” for our tagline last year, my reaction was “YES–let’s use it!” because it conveys quite effectively the spirit in which the musicians of the NSO and I prepare and present our programs, by striving to make every work we play a lively, fresh, and captivating experience, as if we are performing the music for the  very first time. You, our wonderful audience, have our guarantee that the musicians of the NSO and I will work to deliver our very best, whether it’s the power, passion, and grandeur, or the lyrical, subtle, and delicate....every aspect of the wondrous music we perform...so that it leaps to life in as vibrant and thrilling a way as as possible.I hope, then, that you will agree that the NSO—with perhaps a tad less than our usual modesty—can legitimately claim the title as “The North Shore’s Most Exciting Orchestra.” Thank you as always for your support, and I look forward to seeing you soon.

Three exquisite, miniature masterworks of Mozart follow, culminating in Haydn’s glorious final symphony, combining classical elegance and grandeur with the folk-like charm and robust energy of the composer’s beloved homeland.

SchumannViolin ConcertoBeethovenSymphony No. 6, Op. 68 (“Pastorale”)The beauty of nature and simple, bucolic joys of a bygone era are celebrated in a trio of Classical and Romantic works. Of special interest is a rare performance of Robert Schumann’s final masterpiece, the long-lost Violin Concerto, presented by Dmitri Pogorelov, one of the work’s most ardent champions. Beethoven’s enchanting Pastorale Symphony, a chronicle of the great composer’s love of the countryside, is filled with pictorial delights that portray nature in all its glory–murmuring brook, bird calls, country dancing, raging thunderstorm and hearty shepherd’s song.
