Rome AD 36. The mighty Feline Empire rules the world. A ginger cat is comfortable managing Romeʼs finest Bath and Spa, but Fortune has other plans for him. Action-packed and full of historical details, The Spartapuss Series follows the diary of a gladiator cat from Rome to the Land of the Kitons (A.K.A. Britain). Itʼs a great way of making history fun for pupils aged 7 and upwards.

SUMMARY!The room is so hot it is hard to breathe. My legs ache from pushing the pedals on this machine. My fingers throb from the many times they have been pierced by the needle. I think of home. The cool, green forests. I think of home. No money and no food. The boss shouts at me. I don’t speak much English, so I just pedal harder. How hopeful I was that night as we sailed toward the beautiful statue. On that night, I was so sure that my dream of America was about to come true!.

Set in the early 1900s, A Dream of America, follows a young Polish immigrant as she experiences a horrifying journey by sea to New York. She recalls the hours spent under scrutiny on Ellis Island, and while remembering the poverty of her old life, considers whether the loneliness and exhaustion of her new life have been worth the sacrifice.

Yesterday’s Voices is a fantastic series that gives older Hi-Lo readers manageable, yet highly sophisticated, thought-provoking historical fiction. Each story will include a spread that gives the reader the factual background to the historical theme or event explored in the story.

Jacqueline (Jackie) Kennedy Onassis 1929–1994

Born: Southampton, New York

Role: First lady, 1961–1963; wife of John F. Kennedy

Jacqueline Bouvier married John F. Kennedy in 1953 and became one of the most popular first ladies in US history. She refurbished the White House with valuable art and furniture, and invited well-known actors, artists, and intellectuals to visit. As a fluent French speaker with excellent fashion sense, Jackie was warmly welcomed when the Kennedys toured France in 1961. In 1963, Jackie was present in the car when her husband was assassinated, and she bravely stood beside Lyndon B. Johnson as he took over the presidency less than two hours later.

Did you know? In 1968, Jackie married the Greek shipping millionaire Aristotle Onassis.10

The top jobDuring the 1960 campaign for the presidency, Kennedy presented himself as the new, young face of the modern United States, in opposition to the experienced Republican candidate, Richard Nixon. Kennedy campaigned around the country, introducing his “New Frontier” programme, which aimed to tackle the problems of poverty and racial prejudice, while also exploring space and new areas of science.

Kennedy faced several obstacles to being elected president. He was young, he was a Catholic (a minority faith in the United States), and he had never served as a senior member of government. But the American people decided that the time for the New Frontier had arrived, and they elected Kennedy. He and his wife, Jacqueline (known

as Jackie), moved their young family into the White House, and they proved enormously popular.

Reducing povertyPresident Kennedy’s New Frontier speeches led to great expectations of change. The new president achieved some social welfare reforms to help poor Americans: he increased social security payments and the minimum wage (the lowest amount of money people can legally be paid for work). He also increased unemployment benefits.11 To assist people living in poverty abroad, he supported the Food for Peace Programme, which donated US food overseas. In 1961, Kennedy set up the Peace Corps, to send young Americans to developing countries where they could contribute their skills (see page 13).

Kennedy did not succeed in all areas. He was unable to get health insurance for the elderly or cuts in income tax passed through Congress.12

Civil rights: limited reformPresident Kennedy’s civil rights programme also fell short. He introduced some laws – for example, in March 1961, he established the President’s Committee on Equal Employment Opportunity. This made it illegal to discriminate (select based on race) when hiring federal workers and denied federal contracts to businesses that practised discrimination. In November 1962, Kennedy brought in a limited law to stop racial segregation in public housing.

Decisive words: Kennedy’s inaugural addressThe speech Kennedy delivered when he was sworn in as president in January 1961 became part of his legacy. The speech ended with a call for Americans to participate in their country and act as world citizens, rather than expecting their rulers to run society for them. He said:

“And so, my fellow Americans: Ask not

what your country can do for you – ask

what you can do for your country. My

fellow citizens of the world, ask not what

America will do for you, but what, together,

we can do for the freedom of man.”13

TAKING ACTIONMost schools in the South remained segregated after Brown v. Board of

Education because forcing change through legal cases was slow. From

the mid-1950s onwards, more and more civil rights protestors took direct

action to try to speed up change. Direct action is when people carry out

public acts that disrupt or break the law in order to raise awareness of an

issue. Rosa Parks refusing to give up her seat to a white woman on a public

bus in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1955 was an early example. The NAACP

planned this action, and used Rosa’s arrest to spark a boycott of city

buses. After 13 months of lost business and bad publicity, the state made

segregation illegal on its buses.

Other famous examples of taking action for civil rights in the 1950s include

the Little Rock Nine. Nine black children, including Melba Pattillo, tried to

attend a white-only school in 1957. The resulting violence and protests

from people against segregation led to the US government stepping in to

force the governor of Arkansas, Orval Faubus, to desegregate its schools.

ORVAL FAUBUS1910–1994

BORN: Combs, Arkansas

ROLE: Governor of Arkansas from 1954 to 1967. In 1957, he ordered the National Guard to stop black children going to Little Rock High School to keep law and order. US President Dwight D. Eisenhower ordered government troops in to protect the Little Rock Nine so they could attend school.

Did You Know?Faubus ended segregation in Arkansas on state public transport when first elected governor.

WHO IN HISTORY

DANGERIt is difficult to imagine now how strongly some white people felt about civil

rights campaigners in the 1950s. Many were members of groups such as

the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). The KKK was a terrorist organization whose actions

included firebombing homes and churches, and lynching. Lynching

involved a mob seizing, beating, and usually violently killing people. In

1957, for example, the KKK offered a $10,000 reward to anyone who killed

one of the Little Rock Nine.

HISTORY DETECTIVES: sourcesDiaries, interviews, autobiographies, and photos are primary sources, or records of events created at the time under study. Secondary sources are interpretations and analyses of primary sources. They are usually created by people who weren’t there at the time. Examples include books, biographies, and films. Secondary sources can provide good overviews to direct research, but a range of primary sources can add details and bring the past to life.
