AXEL INJURED

Axel Sjöberg underwent successful surgery on his left ham-string on Tuesday, March 14 after picking up an injury in the dying moments of the 1-0 loss at New York Red Bulls. Sjöberg will be re-evaluated in six to eight weeks at which time a further update will be provided. Last season, Sjöberg earned Rapids’ Defender of the Year and was one of three nominees for MLS Defender of the Year. Sjöberg helped guide the league’s best defense to an unbeat-en regular season at home, as well as a trip to the Western Conference Championship. In all, the Rapids’ 2015 MLS SuperDraft first round pick has started all 47 matches he has appeared in for the Rapids, while adding two goals and one assist.

HOWARDS EARNS CALL-UP

“If he continues to remain healthy and makes progress he’s obviously going to get strong consideration for the call-ups in March.” Those were the words last week of US men’s head coach, Bruce Arena, when referring to Rapids goalkeeper Tim How-ard and his chances of being named in the squad for upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Honduras and Panama. Howard had not seen action since suffering an adductor injury during the USA’s loss to Mexico in Columbus on November 11, forcing him to miss the Rapids’ Western Conference Champi-onship games against eventual MLS Cup winners Seattle Sounders FC. It took 90 minutes and seven saves for Howard to announce his return to action, and his heroics in the 1-0 loss at New York Red Bulls were clearly enough to convince Arena that the Sec-retary of Defense was worthy of a call-up. On the factors that will determine which of Howard, Brad Guzan and Nick Rimando would start against Honduras, Arena said: "The health of all three goalkeepers (is a factor), but in Rimando, Guzan and Howard we have three experienced goal-keepers, and I'd feel very comfortable playing any of them. "Once we get into camp on Sunday, and we see how our play-ers get out of the weekend matches and how they look in training, will determine who starts in the goal." Howard has made 111 appearances for the USA's senior side, having made his debut in a 1-0 victory over Ecuador on March 10, 2002. He is one of only 17 players in the history of the men's national team to have reached 100 caps or more. "Getting called-up to the national team is a great honor," said Rapids' head coach, Pablo Mastroeni. "Tim getting called-up is a reflection of the commitment that he still has, and more im-portantly the effort that he put in during the offseason to get back to full health and be available for this part of the season.” The USA are currently bottom of the standings in the final round of 2018 World Cup qualification, having lost their first two games, to Mexico and Costa Rica. They have eight games in which to avoid missing out on the World Cup finals for the first time since 1986.

DA FONTE SIGNED

Earlier this week, the Colorado Rapids Soccer Club announced the signing of defender Mike da Fonte to a two-year contract. Da Fonte arrives in Colorado after spending the 2016 cam-paign with USL side Sacramento Republic FC. “Mike impressed in our preseason meeting with Sacramento last year and we continued to track his progress. He provides competition and increased depth to our already strong defen-sive core,” said Rapids Sporting Director Pádraig Smith. “He is a player who we think has the necessary tools to be successful at the next level.” Last season, da Fonte scored four goals in 19 appearances for Sacramento Republic FC. In 2015, da Fonte served as captain of the newly formed New York Red Bulls II, leading the team in minutes played (2,003) and games started (23). “We are pleased to have Mike join our club for the next two seasons,” said Rapids Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni. “He is a very athletic central defender with experience in Europe and with two prominent USL sides. We look forward to welcoming Mike to the Rapids.” Prior to his USL arrival, da Fonte spent two years playing in the Terceira Divisão Portuguesa, making 23 appearances with S.C. Espinho (2012-13). A year later, da Fonte joined Pedras Salgadas and saw action in 23 contests for the club.

HAMILTON SIGNS

Colorado Rapids Soccer Club announced the signing of 2017 MLS SuperDraft selection Sam Hamilton to an MLS con-tract for 2017, with options for 2018, 2019, and 2020. “Sam performed at a very high level over the course of presea-son and we are confident that he will be a solid addition to our roster,” said Sporting Director Pádraig Smith. “He gives us strong depth at central midfield, and we look forward to watching him continue to develop as a player and to him mak-ing a positive and impactful contribution to our club in the coming years.” Selected in the first round (15th overall), Hamilton officially joins the Rapids after helping the University of Denver reach the 2016 College Cup following the program’s second consec-utive unbeaten regular season. In his four collegiate seasons, Hamilton appeared in a total of 83 matches, which ranks him first in DU’s Division I history.

MATCH REPORT - NEW YORK RED BULLS vs. COLORADO RAPIDS (3/11/17)

The Colorado Rapids Soccer Club dropped their first contest of the season 1-0 at the hands of the New York Red Bulls. Eric Miller’s 45th minute own goal spoiled Tim Howard’s return in a frigid Saturday afternoon at Red Bull Arena. The home side had a number of first-half chances but Howard came up with big saves time and time again. Just two minutes into the game, Bradley Wright-Phillips found himself all alone in front of goal forcing an acrobatic kick save from Howard. Twenty minutes later, Howard would deny Wright-Phillips once more by making another point-blank stop. At the other end, Red Bulls keeper Luis Robles, who made MLS history by appearing in his 142nd consecutive contest, was barely tested in the first 45 minutes. Caleb Calvert, making just his second professional start, sent a left-footed strike into the stands. A few minutes later, Robles came off his line and intercepted the ball from Marlon Hairston. In the dying moments of the first half, the Red Bulls would finally break through. Sal Zizzo got in behind the Rapids’ back line and sent a dangerous ball across the face of goal. While trying to get in front of a Red Bulls attacker, Miller’s attempt at clearing the ball would go past Howard and into the back of the net. Pablo Mastroeni changed things up a bit in the second half by bringing in Dillon Serna for Caleb Calvert and Shkëlzen Gashi for Dillon Powers. The Rapids pressed and enjoyed more possession in the attacking end. Dominique Badji, looking to score his second tally in as many games, had the best opportunity for the Rapids at the 72-minute mark. Badji sprinted past the defense but was unable to beat Robles at the far post. QUOTE SHEET - NEW YORK RED BULLS vs. COLORADO RAPIDS (3/11/17)

Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni – Colorado Rapids Own goals, nobody likes them, but they happen. Besides that, did things go according to plan tonight? Yeah, we knew what we were going to face coming into the Red Bull Arena here. I think it was a hard-fought game. I think coming away from home (Indiscernible), and I think we've done a little bit better. How do you improve your composure and technical ability in that final third? I think every game's different. I think these guys play a really high fast-paced type of ball, and obviously they're not going to allow games to settle down. They're really getting after it. I think, again, two or three breaks on goal, and we've just got to make our chances better. Tim has been out almost four months. When did you kind of decide, okay, this is the day he'll play. I think it was mostly about how he felt and making sure that he was completely recovered from the injury, and not having to think about whether or not he could kick the ball because he wasn't there yet. I think that was the moment. Midfielder Dillon Powers – Colorado Rapids On the game... They came out and played the way they wanted to play. They pressed us really well and they made some good decisions and forced us into some bad ones and we weren’t prepared. On the team’s play... I think as much as we talked about it before about the press, I think it did get to us and it was just a matter of understanding, hav-ing to be calm in those situations and being a lot more cleaner and be more accountable with our touches and passes. On missing players today... Yeah, it was a strange game, sticky pitch, a lot of pressure, a lot of our players tried to keep the ball, and get territory on the press and they didn’t really let themselves. They played clean, beautiful soccer. We were in to create some chances through that but you know, hopefully we could impose our style a little bit next week. Defender Jared Watts – Colorado Rapids On his game today... I think it comes down to who is in the game, so I think you look at collectively first, we knew what we were getting into, a tough team in the Eastern Conference, we knew they had a high press, we knew they were going to come out for their home opener, they wanted to entertain the fans but we had moments where we had chances we tried to go at them, we knew that with some of the attacking players we had we would get some chances. On the own goal... The ball had a weird hop on him and you know, looking at the field, it was a weird surface. It looked nice, it looked good, but we played slow, I don’t want to blame on the field or anything like that but I think its a factor. The weather, the wind, you know, eve-rything, it was just a strange game for Colorado. Not a lot of good soccer out there. On facing Minnesota next week: We got another home game. We know what we got to do. We are going to get another win at home, protect that, and two wins in the first three games is okay. We know what we have to do next week, we got to regroup. We know we got a new team coming in, an Western Conference team, and yeah, nothing but three points.

Loons Look to Rebound Against RapidsFollowing a tumultuous pair of opening matches, Minnesota United is seeking redemption as it travels west to take on the Colorado Rapids. The Rapids have played a pair of close matches to open their 2017 campaign, beating New England 1-0 at home and losing 1-0 to the Red Bulls last Saturday. Colorado was the stingiest team in MLS last year, and seem to be continuing that defensive strategy, led by goalkeeper and U.S. international Tim Howard. Minnesota has shown promise going forward in the past two weeks, and will have its work cut out for it on match day. The Loons will be looking to shore up their defensive woes this week against a Rapids squad that likes to play on the counter.

Minnesota Comes up Short in Snowy Home OpenerA crowd of 35,043 fans braved the weather for the first MLS match at TCF Bank Stadium, as Minnesota United fell 6-1 to Atlanta United. The visitors wasted no time getting in front, scoring in the third minute. Atlanta put in three in the first 27 minutes before Minnesota could answer. After being taken out in the box, Kevin Molino was able to convert a penalty kick to cut the deficit to two. However, a strong second half from Atlanta would produce three more goals, led by a hat trick from Josef Martinez. Things went from bad to worse for Minnesota, as goalkeeper John Alvbage was injured in the waning moments of the match after a collision with Atlanta’s Hector Villalba. This forced Bobby Shuttleworth to step in goal for the final minutes.

Minnesota United FC plays in North America’s top professional soccer league, Major League Soccer (MLS). The league features 22 teams from across the United States and Canada.

After a successful bid to host the World Cup in 1994, the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) founded MLS to bring a top level soccer league back to the country for the first time since 1984, when the original NASL folded. The league was set to begin play in 1996 with ten teams: Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew SC, D.C. United, Dallas Burn (FC Dallas), Kansas City Wiz (Sporting Kansas City), Los Angeles Galaxy, New England Revolution, NY/NJ MetroStars (New York Red Bulls), San Jose Clash (Earthquakes) and Tampa Bay Mutiny.

The league’s first match was played on April 6, 1996 as the San Jose Clash played D.C. United if front of 31,000 fans at Spartan Stadium. The league drew large crowds in its opening season, pulling star power from around North America and building on the excitement of the 1994 FIFA World Cup.

As MLS has continued to grow, clubs have begun moving out of shared American football venues and into soccer-specific stadium, led by the Columbus Crew who moved into the soccer-specific MAPFRE Stadium in 1999. Currently, 14 teams play in soccer-specific venues.

The league is split into the Eastern and Western Conferences. Each team plays 34 matches during the season. Teams play all conference opponents twice, once at home and once on the road, and each team in the other conference once, with an even balance of home and away matches. The remainder of the schedule is filled with matches against conference opponents. The top six teams in each conference at the end of the year qualifying for the MLS Cup Playoffs.

The postseason begins with the third through sixth seeds in each conference playing in a knockout round. The winners advance to the conference semifinals to play the first and second seeds in the conference. In this round, the format switches to a two-match aggregate series, with the team scoring the most goals over the series moving on. The same format is used for the conference finals. The winner of the conference final moves on to face the other conference champion in the MLS Cup Final. The final is a single match, hosted by the team with the best record in the regular season, with the winner being declared MLS Cup Champion.
