Structure

• Thesaurus structure• Top term is “Music”• All terms have at least one BT, except top term• May have more than one BT (Polyhierarchy)

• The relationship between a term and multiple BTs is “and” not “or” (e.g., you cannot have a term whose BTs are “Cat” and “Dog”)

• Avoid terms that simply combine two BTs (e.g. Sacred songs) when possible• No language, demographic, religion, nationality terms, unless inherently part of the genre

name (e.g., Chinese operas vs Children’s songs)

The Future of LCSH for Music• MLA-CMC Vocabularies Subcommittee spearheading the effort to develop algorithms

for generating LCMPT/LCGFT/LCDGT terms from LCSH

• LCSH likely to remain in score and sound recording records for some time to come• LCGFT/LCMPT algorithms may never be perfect• Discovery systems need time to catch up
