Part 1: The HeaderA graphical guide for setting up a proper MLA-
formatted, automated page numbering system on the Microsoft Word app for iPad
Step 1 Open up the
Word app and click
"New", then "Blank
Document"

Step 2 Double tap the upper
portion of the page to open the Header
view

Step 3 Tap the
"Insert" tab on the ribbon, then tap the
icon

Step 4 Toggle the
"Numbering" slider by
tapping or sliding it to
the right; the slider should turn green

Step 5 Set "Position"
to "Top of Page" and
"Alignment" to "Right"

Step 6 Tap anywhere
outside the "Page
Numbers" pane to close it, then tap the
"1" that was inserted in the
header

Step 7 Tap just
slightly left of the "1" until
the box darkens and a blinking blue
cursor appears
Note:This step can be tricky!
Step 8 Simply type in
your last name

Note: the following process can be completed before or after composing the actual piece. This example
shows the process being completed after the piece was composed for demonstrative reasons
Step 1 Tap near the blinking blue cursor, and tap "Select
All"

ReminderPer MLA formatting, dates
should be [Day] [Month] [Year], where
the [Month] is not abbreviated.
ReminderPer MLA formatting, the order
for a proper header is: [Your name]
[Your teacher’s name] [The class name]
[The date], and it should all be aligned to
the right.
ReminderPer MLA formatting, your title should
be centered and all significant words should be capitalized, but it
should otherwise be completely unformatted.
ReminderPer MLA formatting, the beginning sentence of
every paragraph should be indented; to do this, tap the spacebar 5 times, or hit the
tab (—>|) button.
