CLUB SCENE The Tralfamadore Cafe took a giant step forward

last month by booking Stone Alliance for two nights. The trio consists of former sidemen of Elvin Jones and Miles Davis and their music ref I ected those prestigious associations. Steve Grossman, tenor saxophone, I eft no doubt that he is one of the best few to carry on the spirit of Coltrane. It was possibly his best perfo rmance ever due to the trio situation and the fact that this was the premier appearance of the group. Don Alias was simply a monster. A power house of contro lied energy and masterfu I dynamics on trap drums. Oddly enough hi s main axe is congasl Gene Perla's electric bass work was lyrical and refreshing without being overpowering, distorted or overdone . Each note has a distinct meaning and he deserves the worldwide reputation he now enjoys.

As a unit, Stone Alliance is highly energized, rhythmically complex and (by the 4th show) close knit. Their electrif1ed sound will soon reach the jazz fans of South America on their up-coming tour .

All four shows were sold out (despite the weather ) and word is that they'll be back.

Two groups that have been enjoying an accelerating I eve I of popularity are Spira Gyra & Flight. Each projects a '70s sound and is composed of excellent soloists. Try to catch them soon.

The Cotton Club on Niagara Falls Blvd. has been featuring Spider Martin, who's been packing them in six nights a week . Spider is well known all over and should be heard by everyone. The Cotton Club will continue in the jazz format and we wish them the Qreatest success. . . .

Sam Noto was up to his usual h1gh level dunng h1s four nights at the Ericson Lounge last month. He was superbly backed by Jaman-piano, Jim Kerzdorfer bass and Harry Pender -drums. The audience, mostly composed of younger jazz fans, was treated to jazz classics and a good amount of Noto originals. How-

E.R. was well received at the Tra!famadore Cc and is expected back soon . Led by bassist Lou Mcintosh, the quartet has been gathering fans f months at the Ericson. Not only is their music gre< but they never fai I to communicate with the audienc a virtue many groups lack.

The master vibist Milt Jackson opened his thr week engagement at the Stat I er Hi I ton's Downto1 Room on January 20th. He turned out a performan that wi II stay with everyone who attended for son time to come. His pianist was Carol Britto -fro Toronto. She's worked with him at Toronto's Bourb· Street and the two musicians have a great repo i r Equally proficient were bassist Frank Tateanddrun mer George Reed. The audience on that night w magnificent. They were there for one reason- to he the music. There was no talking - in fact, sto silence prevailed between tunes as the S.R.O. crm waited in anticipation. The energy level was high documented by the thundrous applause after eve solo, and, the music iteself.

ABERCROMB I E/ HOL LAND/ DeJOHNETTE -GATEWAY - ECM 1061

John Abercrombie has been featured on a good amount of records recent I y . Gateway is one of the best . All three of these musicians are among the top in their fi eld , but some of their work t ogether has been less than great - e.g . albums under DeJohnette's name. Here they carry off the trio situation with ease -constant I y work mg off their own and each oth ers ide as . May Dance is an 11 minute trip in creative improvi -

sat1on. Perhaps the best cut is Back- Woods Song- a spaced out feature for Abercrombie with Holland and DeJohnette driving, steady and controlled. Much of Abercrombies work is heavily electrified, and ifthats your preference this album shoul d definitely please you . B .W.

JOHN LEE and GERRY BROWN - BLUE NOTE -BN - LA541-G

Drummer Gerry Brown has teamed up with bassist John Lee and released a fine listening album . The music presented is along the I ines of Alphonse Mouzon, but a touch mell owe r . Eft Albert s is refreshing on el ectric guitar, with numerous individuals soloing on synthesizer - most notably Rob Franken and El eventh House's Mike M andel . Gerry Brown powers throughout, whil e funky John Lee lays the groundwork. The result is c lean and fast moving . T .M .

WILLIS JACKSON - HEADED & GUTTED - MUSE 5048 The second outing on Muse records for W i ll1 s

Jackson is an enjoyabl e set of bluesy, soulful jazz . The word gutted in the titl e serves well as a descripti on of Willi s' sound. It has guts. Superb support comes from Pat Mart ino, Mi ckey Tuck er, Bob Cran shaw & Freddi e Waits. The blues tracks with Tucker on organ and Pat 's straight ahead soloing capture my attention the most. Perhaps th e reason that so many of producer Don Schl itten's sessions are a success is that he allows the musi cian to have hi s cho1ce of accompanying musi cians as well as material . Thi s one is just good list ening B .W.

ESTHER PHILLIPS- CONFESSIN THE BLUES - ATLANTIC 1680

This one takes us back to Esther's late 60's Atlanti c period. It is not, however, a re-issue. All of the tracks here are issued for the first time. Side one was done with a 17 piece orchestra led by Onzy Matthews . For the most, the session is laid back and the tunes are short. By contrast, side two was done live at the Pied Piper with the quartetof Jack Wilson, Ike Isaacs, Chuck Rainey and Donald Bailey . The same date produced her Atlantic album Burnin(1565) . The highlight is the blues medley (Blow Top, Jelly Jelly & Long John Blues) running 10 minutes . Good vocal work from Esther, recommended especially for her new fans. B.W.

Ten new twofer re - 1ssues have come out tl month from Blue Note.

THE YOUNG RABBITS by the JAZZ CRUSADE (LA-530) is a gathering of material taken from th• Pacifi c Jazz albums . Th e penod covered is '62-and th e regular group of "St1x", Felder , Sampl e c Henderson is joined by such notables as Hubert Lav Joe Pass, AI McKibbon and others. All those inh ested in th e Crusaders musi c toda y should check tl out. Its straight jazz - all acoustic of course ' strik1ng similantles are easily noted despite' group's change in direct1on - especially in th e tro bone work of Wilton Felder. Some of the best mu is on side 3 - recorded live at the Lighthouse. M of the tunes are originals.

A very hot it em, both for musi c and sales con from CHICK COREA. CIRCLING IN (LA-472) i s co posed of previously unrel eased sessions in' 68 and' Side one is a trio situat1on with Miroslav Vitous; Roy Haynes; th e second I S with Dav1d Holland ; Barry Altschul; and the th1rd is Corea Holland; Anthony Braxton with Chi ck doublmg o'n drums 1nstrument he handl es well). The last side is VI

Corea, Holland, Braxton & Al tschul - the gn known as Circle. Th1s period was a most creal and exploratory one for Corea and all the musi c he1 in is excellent. All the musi c is acousti c and only, non - or1gmal IS heard - Monk 's Pannonica. Two ye. later Corea formed Return to Forever .

Some dynamite SONNY ROLLINS musi c is ave able on MORE FROM THE VILLAGE VANGUA (LA-475). All of th e musi c was r ecorded on the sa day in 1957 and Roll1ns IS presented in two t sett1ngs . Except for one tun e with Donald Bai ley Pete LaRoca, the saxophon1st is in the company bassist Wilbur Ware and a young Elvm Jones T music is on fire and is a must for Roll1ns fan s saxophone lovers in genera I . Th 1 s is the same sess that produced A Ntght at the V11/age Vanguard 1 81581) - a great album r eleased nearly twenty ye ago. Al l of th e music here has never been relea~

BEGINNINGS (LA-531) presents some cia~ musi c featuring WES MONTGOMERY. F1ve sessic r ecorded in '57, '58 & '59 are r epresented v different mus1 c ians 1nc lud1ng Wes' brothers, Bu and Monk. Two tunes 1nc lude Freddi e Hubbarc age 17, making his f1rst r ecord ing . Even at th1s e< date, Wes is playing octaves, although rather sp ingly. Th1 s set is simply loaded with great gu music from the best guitarist jazz has known . Hie re-commended . ·

SONNY ROLLINS - NUCLEUS - MILESTONE 9 With all th e disco musi c flooding th e mark

thes e days, the first few minutes of this album w indeed a scare. Some of the music is funky, but too much soul (real soul - l et's not forget what it and 1s too gutsy to make it as disco. And then ther some straight ahead jazz typical of Sonny's w after his last "vacation" from the scene e.g. Az< & Cosmet and the beautiful ballad My Reverie. H
