St Dunstan’s Open DaySt Dunstan’s Catholic Primary School and Nursery is a wonderful place for children aged 3 to 11.

St Dunstan’s is one of three parish schools in Kings Heath; St Dunstan’s, St Albans’s and Bishop Challoner Catholic College.

As St Dunstan’s School is on the same campus as Bishop Challoner Catholic College and St Dunstan’s Church children regularly take part in shared activities, masses and church celebrations.

St Dunstan’s School is a primary feeder school to Bishop Challoner Catholic College. Children benefit from a programme which provides specialist teaching in subject areas such as PE, Science and Maths.

Academic

All children thrive when they feel happy, safe and secure which is highly valued by all staff and Governors at St Dunstan’s School. Children have achieved brilliant results in the recent SATs examinations – 100% level 4 and above Maths 100% level 4 and above in Science96% level 4 and above in English.

Residential Visits

Children in Year 5 and Year 6 have the opportunity to take part in residential visits to education centres like Stansfeld and Bockleton Study Centre enabling them to experience many outdoor activities such as pond dipping, orienteering, visits to Christchurch in Oxford where Harry Potter was filmed, hill walking etc.

For the last two years a group of children have been taken skiing. Earlier this year a group Year 5 and Year 6 children went to France for a week skiing trip – next year it will be Switzerland!

Page 11: MKH Sep 2011

PE and Sports

The school proudly holds the Activemark 2008 award for exceptional delivery of the National School Sport Strategy. Children also have regular opportunities to be taught by PE specialists and use the exceptional sports facilities of Bishop Challoner Catholic College.

Extra Curricular Clubs

St Dunstan’s has many different clubs and activities running throughout the year some including football, netball, cheerleading, multi skills, Gaelic football, dance and drama and radio club.

In June the school held a ‘ Clubs’ week where many community clubs came into school to carry out taster workshops with the children to introduce them to the many clubs and organisations within our community that they many be interested in joining. These included a street dance club, brownies, a karate club and Moseley Rugby Club as well as many others.

Music

Children are given the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument – guitar, brass, accordion and woodwind. In the summer term the parents are invited to a recital to give the children the opportunity to celebrate their achievements. The school also has a flourishing school choir who join in with many celebrations.

End of Year Production

The end of year production this year was Cinderella Rockerfella

Before and After School Club

The Orchard Club @ St Dunstan’s is on site and cares for children from 4 years of age. The club is open during the summer holidays when the children enjoy a varied programme of activities and outings.

Parent Teacher Association

The school has a thriving PTA who organise many family events such as race nights, quiz nights and discos. The most recent event was the Summer Fun in July which included go-karts, a merry-go-round, bouncy castle, stalls and barbecue. This event raised over £1000.

The benefits of frequent advertisingThe economic slow-down, large scale redundancies and the knock on effect of belt tight-ening across the board is putting the squeeze on many small – and large – businesses.

And this is why now more than ever businesses need to make sure they are in the best position to survive the storm by keeping and growing their customer base.

And the best way to do this is to keep telling people about yourself. Keep telling them about your services and products. Because when they are ready to spend their money you want to be the first people they think of.

Low cost local advertising is worth its weight in gold. And that is why at Swan Publishing we have frozen our rates for the last two years and introduced the new eighth of a page size to make advertising accessible to everyone.

But just putting an advert in the media is not enough. It needs to be as regular as clockwork to really work for you. And here’s why:

1. Very few people have a need for any specific product or service on any given day. So frequent advertising reaches this ‘thin market’ when they are ready to buy, not just when you are ready to sell.

2. Frequent advertising reaches your customers regardless of reading habits. Frequency builds awareness. Awareness builds familiarity and familiarity builds trust. Just like dieting, advertising gets the best results over time. Each ad builds on prior brand recognition.

3. Frequency offers you the best rates. You can get significant discounts for booking your advertising over a longer period of time.

4. Today’s ad may influence – but tomorrows will close the deal. Like pushing a ball up a hill, it is better to push slowly than to push quickly and run out of energy half way up.

5. Frequent advertising helps you beat your competition. If you are not advertising as much as your competition does, who is more likely to reach the consumer who is ready to spend?

6. Advertising is one of your smallest business expenses. Yet not using it often enough can kill your business. If you give up on an advertising campaign before it has had the chance to work, all that investment is wasted.

7. People forget! What are the statistics about how fast people forget? It used to be that something like 80 percent forgot a message in 24 hours. But, I forget.

If you are interested in how low cost frequent advertising is in this magazine just have a look at our website which shows all advertising rates and discounts. www.swanpublishing.org or call Amy Watson on 0121 689 0432.

Raising money for the Edwards TrustJudy Dyke from Tyndallwoods solicitors in Harborne is a passionate Brummie. She is also a patron of Edward’s Trust supporting children and families during serious illness and bereavement.

It is three years since Judy had a heart attack and this year is also the 21st anniversary of the charity.

Judy decided that it was her year to join in the ‘Bupa Great Birmingham Run’ and has asked Friends of Edward’s Trust and colleagues at Tyndallwoods Solicitors and Barclays to join her in Team 21 to raise awareness of and sponsorship for Edward’s Trust.

The team has so far raised £3,900 sponsorship towards the target £10,000. To read the Team 21 blog visit www.tyndallwoods.co.uk

If you would like to sponsor the team you can donate online by going to www.justgiving.com/edwardstrustteam21

How to Play

Fill in the grid so that every row, every column, and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1 through 9, with no repetition!

That’s all there is to it.

You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic - there’s no maths involved and no adding up.

It’s fun. It’s challenging. It’s addictive!

Highbury Children’s Centre is moving on up!!Highbury Children’s Centre has spent the summer moving up from Windsor House at the bottom of the High Street to the heart of Kings Heath in the new All Saints Centre.

Since its launch in February 2009 it has become the place in Moseley and Kings Heath for families with young children to find out what’s on locally, or to get help with all those things that can make the difference between enjoying being a parent or struggling through. Ofsted recognised the good work that has been going on when, earlier in the year, it gave Highbury Children’s Centre a resounding ‘Good’ for every area of its work.

The Centre brings together a range of services for children under five and their families. Whether it’s finding a local stay-and-play group, nursery or child-minder, trying out a new activity, or getting help finding a job, Highbury Children’s Centre has helped hundreds of families. Others have got the support they needed when they were feeling low or needing help with their finances.Services include:

• advice during pregnancy and when your baby is born

• home visiting

• baby massage and baby sensory courses

• parenting support

• information about your child’s health needs

• training courses to improve your life skills or help you back to work

• help finding specialist groups and services.

Highbury Children’s Centre works closely with other partners, such as Poplar Road Health Centre, Kings Heath Library, Flying Start, and Queensbridge School. If there is something they can’t help you with, they’ll do their very best to make sure they help you find someone who can.

Highbury Children’s Centre manager, Dilys Garrod, said: ‘Moving to All Saints Centre means that it will be easier for people to find us, and we’re also delighted to be in the same building as key partners such as All Saints Youth Project and Parks 4 Play.’

So if you live in the Moseley and Kings Heath area and have a child under 5, drop in and see the Highbury Children’s Centre team at All Saints or give them a call to register with them. You’ll receive a free bag full of goodies as a thank you!
