British Military Administration and Nationalism after the Second World War

Extract A: fne ending of Japanese Occupation

The Japanese occupation of Brunei ended in 1945. The defeat of the Japanese forcestook only a few weeks and then the British Military Administration (BMA) was set up togovern Brunei. The effects of the occupation took time to deal with- For example, the oilindustry presented problems and many diseases were affecting the population severely.

Extract B: The British Military Administration in Action

The BMA continued to operate for a year after the defeat of Japan. Though much wasachieved, there were problems before the BMA was ready to hand over the administrationto the civilian authorities. Bruneians found reasons to be critical of some actions underthe BMA, and at the same time nationalist influences were developing.
