MIZORAM STATE POLLUTION CONTROL BOARD
REPORT ON OBSERVATION OF THE WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2018
The World Environment Day, 2018 with the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ was
observed in Mizoram by the Mizoram Pollution Control Board, Mizoram ENVIS Hub
and National Green Corps (NGC) in collaboration with Centre for Environment
Education (CEE),
To commemorate the WED, the Mizoram Pollution Control Board had chalked
out various events to be carried at the pre – WED and on the D-Day. The pre-WED
activities included ‘On the Spot Painting Competition’, ‘Competition on Crafting from
Plastic wastes’ for Eco Club members and a documentary on Plastic wastes which
were carried out during May 2018. A grand function was also organized on 5th June
2018 which comprises of various items like prize distribution of the competitions,
launching of the Toolkits and kick-off the programmes named “Plastic wastes for road
construction in Mizoram’ and a video show of plastic wastes and its ill effects etc.
The different activities made in observance of the WED, 2018 are discussed in
details as follows.
1. CRAFTING COMPETITION:
With an aim to create awareness on plastic pollution and impart the importance
of practicing the four R’s of waste management: Reduce, Reuse and Recycling and
Recovery among the students, a Crafting Competition was held for Eco-Clubs within
the State under the sponsorship of the Centre for Environment Protection, Ahmedabad.
Students were invited to make stuff from used plastic materials at their own places and
submit the same to the office of Mizoram Pollution Control Board during the month of
May, 2018. 62 items were received from students and judged by staff of the Mizoram
Pollution Control Board through secret ballot. The top three positions carry a cash prize
of Rs 3,000/-, Rs 2,000/- and Rs 1,000/- with certificates. Participation certificates were
also made for all the participating students. Result of the competition was declared
and the prize winners were awarded at the function held on the day of the WED. The
participation certificates were also awarded to the Teacher- In-charge of the
participating School.

The crafts were also displayed at the venue of the function held on the WED,
2018 and the cash prizes were sponsored by the Centre for Environment Protection

2.PAINTING COMPETITION:
As a part of observation of the World Environment Day 2018, ‘On the Spot
Painting Competition’ on ‘Plastic Pollution’ was also organized for Eco-clubs within
Aizawl City on 26th May, 2018 (Saturday) at Govt. Aizawl College, Sikulpuikawn,
Aizawl. The competition was held for two categories: Category I & Category II
depending upon the standards of the students. Primary School and Middle School
Level are grouped in Category I while Category II comprises of High School and Higher
Secondary School Level. In the Competition, students were given papers of the same
quality and size, but were allowed to use any painting materials of their choice. The top
three (3) position under Category I carry a cash prize of Rs. 3000/-, 2,000/-, 1,000/-
and certificates while for Category II, the prizes included certificates and sum of Rs.
5,000/-, Rs. 3,000/- & Rs. 1,000/- . The Mizoram Pollution Control Board financed the
cash prizes. Under category I, 27 students turned up while 61 students participated
under category II. Two (2) professionals from Aizawl Art Gallery & School of Fine Arts
were hired to scrutinize and judge the competition. The programme was publicized
through Local Television channels and in leading local Newspapers.
Winners were declared and awarded at the ceremony of the WED, 2018 where
the Judges, as invited, remarked on how the examination was done during the
competition. The paintings were also displayed at the venue of the function held on the
WED, 2018.

3. VIDEO CLIP
Another activity made as a part of observation of World Environment Day, 2018
was making of a short video clip entitled ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’. The Mizoram ENVIS
Hub in the office of the Mizoram Pollution Control Board had documented the present
scenario of plastic pollution in the state in the form of a video. The clip along with
similar clips collected was shown to the invitees of the function made in observance of
the WED on 5th June 2018.

FUNCTION ON THE DAY OF THE
WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY, 2018
On 5th June, 2018 along with the rest of the World, a grand function was
organized to commemorate the World Environment Day, 2018 at Golden Hall, Govt.
Hrangbana College, Aizawl. Govt. officials, prominent citizens, representative from the
CEP, local Environmental NGOs and Eco-Clubs attended the function.
The function was chaired by Pi PC. Lalmuanpuii, Asst. Environmental Engineer,
MPCB. Pu C. Lalduhawma, Member Secretary, Mizoram Pollution Control Board

addressed the gathering and expressed his concern over increasing plastic pollution
observed in the State. He mentioned that plastic materials have now become
indispensable to our daily lives thereby making complete ban as almost impossible.
Pollution arising from littering of plastic waste however could be checked by minimizing
its usage and careful disposal. He also urged the Eco-Clubs to make a common place
for storing plastic wastes in their respective schools and hand over collected plastic
wastes to the office of Mizoram Pollution Control Board.
The Member Secretary kicked off the programme for implementation of Plastic
Road Construction in Mizoram. He also launched Toolkit on Plastic and Plastic
Pollution developed by Centre for Environment Education, India for schools across the
Country.

Dr. Alfred Malsawmsanga, Scientific Assistant, Mizoram Pollution Control Board
gave a power point presentation on how plastic wastes could be utilized for Road
Construction and advantages of constructing such roads .
Results of ‘Crafting Competition’ and ‘On the Spot Painting Competition’ were
announced and the winners were awarded with cash prizes and certificates during the
function. All the participants of both the competitions were also handed over
participation certificates.
The function concluded with vote of thanks by Pu K. Vanlalfamkima, Programme
Officer, Mizoram ENVIS Hub.
Results of Crafting and Painting competitions and Programme sheet and
attendance sheet of participants are attached as Annexure I, Annexure II and
Annexure III respectively.
To further create awareness on the theme of this year’s World Environment
Day, no one-time use Plastic items like plastic waster bottle or banner were used at the
function. The gatherings were also informed of the intentions behind such activities.
