The project
EdReNe 8th Strategic Seminar, 7th-8th May 2012, Lisbon, Portugal
Nov 2011 – febr 2012 Part of ECK2 programme: remixing educational content Tools: Metaplus, Wikiwijs delen, Query builder Participants: Educational publishers, schools, teacher-communities
(Digischool)/repository owners SLO – detailled curriculum description / vocabularies (subjects:
Geography & Mathematics) Kennisnet / Edurep / Wikiwijs Individual teachers for evaluation of the project
Why this project?
EdReNe 8th Strategic Seminar, 7th-8th May 2012, Lisbon, Portugal
From other (ECK 1) projects we learned:
Teachers need variation on their basic curriculum
The current search facilities do not provide enough useful teaching material (too much, not appropriate, not good enough)
This includes:- general search facilities (the Googles)- specific search facilities (teachers search portals like Wikiwijs)
Ambition
EdReNe 8th Strategic Seminar, 7th-8th May 2012, Lisbon, Portugal
Achieve a fundamental improvement for the teacher who wants to make a good mix of educational resources and wants to use this mix in an effective way.
2 scenario’s:
– A. Search by structure of the textbook
– B. Search by subject matter / detailed curriculum description

What did we evaluate
1. Questions for the project / programme (ECK2)
2. Questions for teachers
3. Questions for content providors, repository owners and portal builders
Questions for teachers
1. Are the 2 search scenario’s (- structure of the textbook or - subject matter / detailed curriculum description) usefull for teachers when they are looking for additional or replacement teaching material?
2. Do teachers get enough and relevant search results when searching by detailed curriculum specifications?
How did we evaluate Sessions with 21 teachers Demonstration of both scenario’s Hands-on search excercises and evaluations
Interviews (14) with content owners who offered learning objects. Interviews with portal builders (both educational publishers and
open content owners) Interviews with metadata editors
Some results…..
EdReNe 8th Strategic Seminar, 7th-8th May 2012, Lisbon, Portugal
Teachers appreciate searching for additional teaching material by (detailed) curriculum description (convenience, speed, better than Google)
Methodically working teachers prefer scenario A (search from the structure of the textbook)
Teachers expect that from Scenario A additional material found on the publishers website is judged on quality
Teachers expect that additional material is free and open (and easy to access)
Teachers wanted more info (metadata) on the learning objects to judge the individual learning objects (type of material, typical learning time, rating/peer review, …)
Queries build by publishers are not always what teachers wish or expect
Results and the future
The results are currently only available for internal use. We need more investigation
We will start other projects (primary school, vocational training, project linked data)
Results – metadata
• Takes a lot of time
• Can only be done by specialists on the subject
Results – curriculum based vocabularies
Nearly everybody finds it good to have a standard description of the curriculum
A detailed vocabulairy gives better search results
For Mathematics and geography the representation of the curriculum in the pilot was clear but there were remarks on complexcity and details
