    Mitsui & Co., Ltd.

*Legally speaking, there has been no continuation between the former Mitsui & Co.

and the current Mitsui & Co.

is year is the nal of Mitsui & Co.s Medium-Term Management PlanChallenge & Innovation 2014. Our theme for the year ahead is agility,as we take another step forward in our continuous development. In Japanese,as in most of the worlds languages, there is an expression that meansBe quick to seize opportunities that arise, and given the improving business

environment and outlook, it seems appropriate to keep this expression inmind with agility as our theme. For Mitsui, I believe this means we haveto maintain direct contact with the front line of our business, communicateclosely with our customers and business partners, and use our imaginationto identify and act rapidly on opportunities as they arise.

Being adaptable in response to change is nothing new for Mitsui, because sincethe founding of the former Mitsui & Co.*, more than 130 years ago, we haveconstantly adapted our business model to the needs of each era. Nonetheless,it is clear that in todays world the pace of change is accelerating, with acorresponding increase in uncertainty. is makes it even harder to predictthe future, and even more important that we move with speed and agility.

Despite the unpredictability that confronts us in the short term, it seems quiteclear that, in the medium and longer term, global economic developmentwillcontinue, bringing prosperity to more and more people. And throughout thisprocess, extensive business opportunities will arise, driven by the needfor energy, food, water and other items essential for our lifestyles, along

with basic services such as medical care and education, and infrastructuredevelopment for power supply, transportation and communications. Manyof these new business opportunities will align closely with our capabilitiesand ambition at Mitsui, enabling us to participate in the global growth story asa company founded in Japan and growing in the international arena.

In the year ahead, the entire team at Mitsui & Co. will be working as one toassess and act on challenges and opportunities as they arise. By drawing on our

comprehensive business engineering capabilities, our aim is to come togetherwith our customers and business partners to help realize a world of greaterprosperity for all.
