At Mitsubishi Motors we’ve transformed the way we think – our goal is to become aworld leader in the reduction of CO2 emissions on a global scale and already we’vecome a long way. We were the very first mainstream manufacturer to bring an electricvehicle to the UK market and are truly serious about hybrids (the ground-breakingOutlander PHEV is the very first production vehicle specifically designed as bothan internal combustion engine vehicle and a hybrid). All of our vehicles sold herein the UK are at least 85% recyclable and many of our components are made fromrecycled parts or utilise plant based resins instead of plastics; we are also makingsmaller and lighter vehicles and employing advanced aerodynamics, fuel efficienttyres and stop-start technologies to name but a few.

But at Mitsubishi Motors it’s not just our cars that are greener. In our offices we’resaving waste, power, packaging and becoming paper-free. And our manufacturingprocess is cleaner too; we’ve planted hundreds of thousands of trees and eliminatedenvironmentally hazardous substances; and our factories are switching to water-basedpaint and working towards zero landfill waste. Our philosophy is one of continualevolution and improvement.

Bright spark. Bright future.

We call this Intelligent Motion.

A perfect fit for lifeIndividual, innovative, versatile, capable, the ASX is the smart andefficient compact crossover with a conscience and it will fit your lifelike a glove. Like so many Mitsubishi models before it, quietly andwithout fanfare it has become the vehicle of choice amongst realpeople who have real families to ferry around in the real world. It nowcomes with a choice of three lightweight, low-environmental impactengines (one petrol and two diesel), a choice of two- or all-wheel

drive, top-of-the-class safety features, truly impressive low-emissionstechnology, edgy styling, a nimble drive and plenty of room to swalloweven the lankiest of families whole. It’s quiet on the road with well-weighted steering and a forgiving nature which soaks up the lumpsand bumps with ease, and it packs a real punch when you ask it. It’sthe car which will accommodate your needs and reflect your values, and it will bring a little extra pleasure into your life along the way.

Low-environmental impact engines

Mitsubishi never stop working to make their engines as cleanas possible, which is why the ASX’s 1.6 litre petrol engineemits just 137 g/km of CO2 – a class-leading figure. It featuresMitsubishi’s clever MIVEC variable valve timing technology, resulting in better starting, reduced emissions at lower enginespeeds and greater output power at higher ones. The 1.8 litre

diesel option is mated to a six-speed manual transmissionand delivers a strong spread of power with plenty of pulllow down. The maximum torque of 221 lb.ft. is achieved at just 1750 rpm making for really relaxed progress andbecause the compression ratio is exceptionally low it allowsthe engine to operate quietly at all speeds.

Page 4: Mitsubishi ASX

Intelligent motion on the roadASX stands for Active Sports X-over, which is an excellentindication of just how much fun this vehicle is to drive. But the ASX has a very serious side, too: it’s one of the vehicleswhich best illustrates Mitsubishi’s Intelligent Motion philosophyon the road. In addition to the low-environmental impactengines – themselves designed to optimize economy andemissions by using low viscosity oil and incorporating aclosed flow particulate filter on the diesel engines – the ASX features many other technological innovations with anenvironmental mission. These include advanced alternator

control which increases battery charging when brakingand reduces it during idling, accelerating or cruising, easingthe load on the engine for improved fuel consumption; lowrolling resistance tyres, which combine with the ASX’sexcellent aerodynamics to reduce drag; and electric, ratherthan hydraulic power steering. For even greater efficiency a gear shift indicator, positioned directly in your line of sightbetween the speedometer and the rev counter, recommendsthe best shift timing. Put together, all this makes the ASX avery clever car indeed.

Just the right styleSophisticatedly monochromatic, employing a contrasting useof textures and materials for real visual impact; ergonomicallydesigned and generous with equipment, the ASX exhibitsconsiderable style. Even entry-level models come with electricwindows, manual air conditioning, a Bluetooth® hands-free ’phoneconnection, seven airbags and stability and traction control, whilstthose further up the range include climate control air conditioning, leather upholstery, cruise control, rain and dusk sensors, satellitenavigation, privacy glass and a panoramic glass roof.

Just the right substanceThe ASX’s sharp styling and short overhangs mean that it shoehornsa generous wheelbase into a compact footprint, giving you the verybest of both worlds – loads of elbow, leg and head-room inside a vehicle which is just the right size for tackling our overcrowdedurban roads. Its tall profile allows even the gangliest teenagersplenty of room in the back and makes the average hatchback seem uncomfortably snug by comparison. Indeed, it’s extremelyeasy to get comfortable in the ASX: the steering wheel, leather

wrapped on most models, adjusts for both rake and reach;the lighting is well planned, there are plenty of convenientpockets and cupholders and the overall finish combines qualityfabrics with pleasingly soft plastics. The seats, heated in thefront on all bar the entry level model, are both comfortable andsupportive and the size and positioning of the headrests arespecifically designed to provide more support and reducewhiplash in the event of a collision.

10 11

The high point

Taller than average dimensions combined with asloping bonnet provide the slightly elevated viewof the road characteristic of an SUV; the raisedhip point also makes entry and exit easier andlong journeys more comfortable.

Getting a grip on ASX 4The clue is in the number: Mitsubishi ASX 4 models featurea selectable, on-demand all-wheel drive system and it gives you the best of all possible worlds. It provides extra grip when youneed it yet still returns excellent fuel economy. This is because, whichever four-wheel drive setting is selected, it is only engagedwhen actually required; ‘4WD’ mode provides better grip onslippery road surfaces or greater stability when powering out ofjunctions or towing on the highway, whilst ‘LOCK’ mode enablesyou to tackle difficult terrain or challenging weather conditions, like the snowy winters which seem to be becoming the norm.

ASX 4 comes with either the 1.8 litre direct injection diesel engineand manual transmission, or a 2.2 litre, 147 bhp power plant. Also direct injection diesel, this engine delivers more than enoughpunch to hustle along when the mood takes you, yet its frugaland clean-running nature returns a highly respectable average ofover 48 mpg; and this in an automatic. Granted it is a particularlyclever 6-speed INVECS-II auto. It learns to emulate your drivingstyle and adjust the timing of its gearshifts accordingly, and itoffers the option of manual control via the shift lever or steeringcolumn-mounted shift paddles if the mood takes you.

12 13

Whichever ASX 4 you opt for you get to enjoy animpressive view, thanks to a spectacular panoramicglass roof. This makes the ASX 4’s already generousinterior space feel even more expansive. At nightsoft-glow interior illumination is provided by tworows of LED lights, and if the summer sun gets toobright or the winter sky too grey, a powered shadecan be brought forward at the touch of a button.

Of course, as top of the ASX range, this isn’t theonly luxury fitted as standard. You get leather

upholstery, heated front seats with a 4-way poweradjustment for the driver, and an integratedmultimedia system with a touch-screen displaywhich relays views from the tailgate-mountedcamera when reverse gear is selected. Thissystem provides efficient satellite navigationwith 2-D or 3-D map viewing modes and built-intrip computer, a Bluetooth® hands free ’phoneconnection and music from the radio, CD orUSB-connected device.

Just the right use of spaceDecades of experience in designing multi-purpose, seven-seater vehicles, and as one of the very first manufacturers to introduce increased height intocompact cars, Mitsubishi are experts in maximising the use of space: theASX is the epitome of this expertise. It has a capacious, 416 litre boot withwide opening tailgate and low floor for easy access, as well as a large 26 litreunderfloor tray, a 60:40 split rear bench seat and an easy-fold to flat facilityso that you have the versatility to match your ever-changing needs.

Living with the ASX

The ASX is practical yet fun, fast yet frugal. It’seasy to drive with willing engines, a well-sortedchassis and clever brakes; easy to park withparking sensors or a rear view camera*, andeasy to live with, thanks in part to Mitsubishi’sETACS system which controls all those small butsignificant details which highlight the differencebetween a good car and a great one. Littlethings like headlights which stay on for a pre-programmable duration to light your way home;

a highly intelligent wash/wipe system whichseems to think for itself; and side mirrors whichcan automatically retract when you lock thedoors, ending those anonymously brokenmirrors forever. The ASX goes about itsbusiness quietly, thanks to clever noise andvibration isolation, and it’s a Mitsubishi so youcan expect it to continue doing so day, afterday, after day. Indeed, the ASX will alwaysbring a smile to your face and keep it there.

Active Stability Control (ASC)

The Active Stability Control system uses onboardsensors to analyse the vehicle’s motion and identifylateral wheel slippage. By governing engine outputand applying braking power to the appropriate wheels,ASC helps to maintain stability and control.

Lateral rear-wheel slippage

Braking force is applied to the outerfront wheel to prevent spin-out.

Lateral front-wheel slippage

Braking force is applied to the innerrear wheel to prevent front-end drift.

Five stars for safetyBenefitting from the lessons learned in many of Mitsubishi’s largervehicles, the ASX enjoys a highly rigid body structure which resultsin improved driving dynamics, greater comfort and, of course, increased safety. It uses Mitsubishi’s proprietary RISE (ReinforcedImpact Safety Evolution) system to integrate and interconnectthe structural elements which provide a dramatic advance inmultidirectional impact safety performance, dispersing energyloads during front, side and rear crashes and controlling distortion. These elements include a reinforced girdle body construction, the increased use of high-tensile steel (which also aids in thereduction of weight) and numerous crush box and energy

absorbing structures; even the brake pedal features a push-prevention system designed to reduce injuries to the driver’s legs.Active safety features include stability and traction controls andextremely clever brakes, indeed, cleverfeatures are a hallmark of this car – evenensuring that the braking action alwaystakes precedence should you inadvertentlypress the brake and accelerator pedalssimultaneously. The result? A coveted top,five-star rating in the independent EuroNCAP safety tests.

16 17

Safety in the bag

All models feature seven airbags, including dual front, side anddriver’s knee airbags to provide increased safety in the front, whilst curtain airbags provide protection in the event of a sidecollision. These work in conjunction with specially designed seatsand headrests which allow the occupants’ bodies to sink into theseats more quickly, thus providing extra support to the head andback and so aiding in the reduction of whiplash.

Traction Control Function

When wheel spin is detected, engine outputis governed and braking force is applied tothe spinning wheels to prevent drivingtorque loss ensuring smooth starts andlinear acceleration.

So much more than ABS

The ASX is a clever car. Take the brakes, for example: ABS of course, completewith EBD which automatically adjusts the brake effort to individual wheels toaccommodate the location of weight. Then there is Brake Assist, providing powerassistance to boost braking in an emergency situation, an Emergency Stop signalSystem, which automatically flashes the hazard warning lights at double speed towarn vehicles around you in such a situation, and Hill Start Assist, which maintainsthe braking force on a hill for about two seconds until the accelerator is applied.
