UK SEASON 13

UK Season 13 is here and Mitoo is looking forward to seeing who will be the champions of their league. With every season comes the opportunity for players to display their talents and possibly take home a trophy. Over the years Mitoo has seen countless champions and has seen the development of many youth teams as they have aged.

But, what about those teams that go under the radar and barely find enough players to create a squad each year? What happens to them from season to season?

Old Actonians U14 just managed to get their players for the new season. What is their problem? Forging too many good players that have been taken by professional team.

Forging new talents is great, but after years of amazing results, professional

teams should start thinking about supporting these amazing teams rather than just taking their players.

Kindlington Old Boys have been around for 14 years and every year it becomes a greater struggle for them to stay alive, as it seems more and more players are switching to rival clubs. With a bleak future management is also jumping ship leaving just the 11 players to build their team.

Parents, players, and managers are all disgruntled with the direction the club has been taking. It’s hard to remain motivated when so much seems to be slipping through the cracks. For their love of the sport, though, the players are determined to make it through another season.

that can lead a team to victory. As Mark Twain puts in, “it’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog.”

Mitoo’s 13th season will undoubtedly be one to remember, as clubs will battle it out to be their league champions. Mitoo is looking forward to following teams and seeing how this season plays out.

The story of the underdog, though, will be something to watch. There is no question the size of the fight in the 11 players making up Kindlington Old Boys. This could be their year to make history.

He’s a small lad from Dublin making big noise in the world of football.

At a young age his parents could tell his love for football. Maybe it was because he crashed through a window playing football at his grandmother’s house or the fact that even in his buggy he always had a football with him as a comfort.

If he’s not training with his team or at skills schools he’s probably on his street training. To practice his ball control Ciaran spends hours kicking into a sidewall where he lives.

He loves teaching himself new skills and can often be spotted at a nearby park coming up with his own drills. Whether it’s a freestyle move, new type of skill move, or a tricky way to pass/shoot Ciaran is a fast learner and picks it up quite easily. This works to his advantage as it makes him completely versatile and able to play literally anywhere on the pitch.

His skill with the ball has given him opportunities that most kids only dream of. Sure he likes the fame and attention, who doesn’t? But more than anything he loves meeting real footballers where he gets the opportunity to play and learn from them. Like when he got to meet Andrew Henderson, the current World Freestyle Champion.

Football isn’t his only passion though. He is a loving and caring brother to two remarkable sisters and donates a lot of his time to charities.

On weekends when he has time, he freestyles for charities and has been helping a baby girl from Boston receive treatment for her aggressive brain cancer. (to learn more visit www.kare4kasey.com).

With all his charity work it seems impossible that he would have time to be a normal kid. But, Ciaran manages that too.

It’s amazing what Ciaran has done in just 8 years. His determination and focus is something to be admired by people of all ages. Remember the name because Ciaran Duffy is already in the makings of becoming a legendary footballer.

Just 8 years old he’s mastered tricks that even some professionals can’t do and to top that off he gets bored after 2,376 juggles with a size 5 ball.

Earning your laces isn’t just about the individual player though; it’s a team identity.


FOLLOW LEHIGH WOMEN SOCCER TEAM

This year eight teams will be fighting for the right to call themselves Patriot League Champions—a title that the Lehigh University Women’s Football team is no stranger to.

After a drought of 20 years Lehigh finally raised the trophy in 2010 but had a disappointing season the following year, not even making the championship tournament as the loss of many talented and experienced players took its toll.

With the 2012 season just around the corner it is up to a group of 23 girls to decide just how badly they want to win and raise that trophy again.

During the summer their dedication is tested, as they have to train on their own following a rigorous workout program with high standards set for every drill and exercise. Each day of the summer has a different assigned work out.

One day the girls may find they are running suicides on a pitch while the next day may consist of an interval run, followed by a lifting session in a gym. Interval runs vary as some consist of 15 seconds of sprinting followed by 45 seconds active recovery or 90 seconds of hard running followed by 3 minutes of active recovery. Additionally, they are also expected to find quality summer teams to play with.

All of the players have the same goal coming into pre-season – earn your laces – a tradition that the Lehigh Women’s team has followed for many seasons. For motivation all the girls wear yellow laces on their boots to symbolize their hard work and dedication to the program throughout the summer.

Upon arrival back at school they must pass a series of grueling fitness and skill tests. It’s simple really – come to pre-season in shape, earn your laces. Show up out of shape – sign yourself up for brutal 6 am fitness and skill sessions and lose any hope of seeing playing time for the first couple of games.

Earning your laces isn’t just about the individual player though; it’s a team identity. Every time the Lehigh team steps onto the pitch a downward glance at their boots reminds them who they represent and why they trained so hard.

Twenty-three hopefuls are looking to earn those coveted yellow laces this pre-season at Lehigh University – I know I will. I am confident that if all my teammates can earn their laces before the start of the season we will raise the Patriot League Championship trophy once again.

With every year comes a new promise of a successful season and in the end a championship.

On a patch of grass outside their home in Kolomak, eastern Ukraine, teenagers Artem, Pasha and Tanya are kicking around a football in the sunshine, laughing and joking as they take turns to stand in goal.

It’s a familiar scene the world over during the school summer holidays but this one would have been unthinkable not so long ago.

For years the three lived on the streets in Kharkiv, scavenging and stealing to survive, even in freezing winters. Like many of the 160,000 children estimated to live rough inUkraine, they had decided that this existence was better than life with their families.

For Artem Nevedrov, 15, football came to the rescue. He was offered a chance to take part in the 2010 Street Child World Cup in Durban and his team-mate Pasha asked hisfoster mother if Artem could live with them. Tanya, another member of the Depaul charity’s team for the tournament, was welcomed into the family, as was her brother.

‘I owe the Street Child World Cup my dreams of a family,’ says Artem, who left home because his parents barely fed and clothed him. His face lights up when he recalls the trip to South Africa, his first time outside Ukraine. A favourite memory isof kicking a ball around with his friend, Wanda, from the South African team.

Street Child World Cup brings together teams of street children from around the world to take part in the competition and a unique conference before the FIFA WorldCup. The charity harnesses the power of football to transform the lives of some of the most marginalised and vulnerable people in the world.

For Artem, who is still a keen football player, the SCWC opened his eyes to the fact that young people everywhere faced similar hardships

and discrimination. ‘I was shocked because conditions for the children on the streets of South Africa were so much harder than for us. I learned to be grateful for every positive thing.’

Just as importantly, the tournament offered an escape from the feelings of hunger and being unloved that came from living on the streets, as well as the sheer joy of playing football for a teenager whose childhood had been scarred by abuse and neglect. For Artem, there was also the sense of self-worth from representing his country.

On a small patch of wall in a corner of the bedroom he now shares with his foster brothers, Artem has displayed the South African flag and badge from the tournament.He is clearly proud of his souvenirs but he scarcely needs them to jog his memories.

As the World Cup qualifiers begin (Ukraine will play England on 11 September), so too does the road to Rio 2014, when SCWC will hold its next tournament, featuring teams of street children drawn from NGOs in 16 countries. Even more than for thestars of the world’s soccer pitches, for children like Artem, Tanya and Pasha – in Brazil, never will so much have been at stake.

Drive: The more traditional Predator element, uses firmer rubber to create a deadly strike zone

Sweet Spot: SL Rubber on the instep toe area for a ‘high risk/high reward’ combination of spin and power when striking.

Pass: Memory foam pass-pad on the instep for a consistent passing surface.

Dribble: Rubber ‘Ribs’ on the outstep for precise ‘second skin’ feel when dribbling.
