The Marauders booked their ticket to Calgary with their 29-15 upset of top-ranked Western in last week’s Yates Cup and make their first appearance in the national semifinals since 2014, while the Dinos return to the national stage after a one-year absence after a sterling defensive performance in last week’s Hardy Cup, a 29-4 win over Saskatchewan. On paper, the teams are evenly matched: both with 6-2 regular season records, solid pass defences, and similar passing offences. With great weather forecast for mid-November in Calgary, the fast track at McMahon could get a workout as two of the top three passing teams in Canada go to work. The winner, of course, advances to next week’s Vanier Cup at TELUS-UL Stadium in Quebec City, where they will face the winner of Saturday’s Uteck Bowl between Acadia and Montreal in Wolfville, N.S. LAST DINOS-MARAUDERS MEETING – November 17, 2012 @ Ron Joyce Stadium

HAMILTON – The nation's most explosive offence put up just 200 yards and fell behind the eight-ball early with penalty woes as the No. 3 Calgary Dinos struggled all night en route to a 45-6 loss to the McMaster Marauders in the 2012 CIS Mitchell Bowl. McMaster returns to their second straight Vanier Cup to face the No. 2 Laval Rouge et Or in a rematch of last year`s CIS championship which the Marauders won in overtime 41-38 in Vancouver. Earlier Saturday, Laval dumped No. 9 Acadia 42-7 to return to the Vanier for their third consecutive appearance. The win also extends McMaster’s CIS record consecutive win streak to 21 games. Kyle Quinlan of South Woodslee, Ont., who was named the game's most valuable player, was involved in 36 of the Marauders 45 points tossing three touchdowns and rushing for another three on the ground. He finished with 412-yards passing on 25 of 35 attempts. The fifth-year senior also rushed for an additional 50 yards on 11 carries. McMaster`s defence stymied Calgary`s offence, which was the ranked No. 1 in almost every offensive category heading into the game, posting just 200 total yards and only six points. Dinos running back Steve Lumbala of Calgary finished with just 39 yards on 14 carries while Canada West MVP Eric Dzwilewski of Boise. Idaho, threw for just 114 yards making 10 completions on 21 attempts. CIS regular season sack leader Ben D'Aguilar of Hamilton racked up three of the five sacks surrendered by Calgary while Aram Eisho of Hamilton tallied a game high 10 solo tackles. Defensive back Steve Ventresca of Hamilton also posted nine tackles and two pass breakups.

Joey Cupido of Hamilton was the lone Marauder to pick off Dzwilewski returning it 49 yards late in the fourth quarter.

Rob Babic of Oakville, Ont. was the game's top receiver and favorite Quinlan target making 10 receptions for 156 yard and converting one touchdown in the win for the Marauders.

McMaster scored 37 unanswered points, starting in midway through the second quarter, to push the Marauders into their third Vanier Cup appearance.

In the end, Calgary came undone in the second quarter committing eight penalties for a loss of 66 yards helping McMaster post 17 points in that quarter on route to the win. In total, the Dinos were called for 17 penalties for a loss of 127 yards.

“We spoke about penalties all year and it came back to bite us today,” said Calgary Head Coach Blake Nill. “Our defence came out strong but got worn out and the offence just couldn't get it started today.”

Quinlan's first rushing touchdown came after two crucial penalties by Calgary as time expired in the opening frame making the score 7-3 at the time.

McMaster blew the game open late in the second quarter after securing scoring 14 points twice within 58 seconds. Quinlan punched in a one-yard run on the first score then found Brad Fochesato of Windsor, Ontario to make the score 24-4 heading into the half. The Marauders would go on to punch in 21 more points in the second half while Calgary would must just a safety with a 1:17 left to close the game's scoring at 45-6.

Head Coach: WAYNE HARRIS

For more than 40 years, Wayne Harris has been involved with the Dinos as a player, alumnus, assistant coach, and most recently defensive coordinator – and he was named the sixth head coach in Dinos Football history on February 12, 2015.

In his first season with the Dinos, Harris captured CIS coach-of-the-year honours after leading the program to an undefeated season and the No. 1

national ranking for eight consecutive weeks.

The son of Calgary Stampeders legend Wayne Harris, Sr., Harris starred as a two-sport athlete for the Dinos from 1977-81 in both football and wrestling. He was a three-time Canada West all-star at linebacker and added a conference wrestling title in 1980. He spent four seasons in the Canadian Football League with the Stampeders, B.C. Lions, and Toronto Argonauts before retiring in 1984, when he joined the Calgary Board of Education.

Over the course of his coaching career with the Dinos, Harris has been part of seven Hardy Cup championship teams and participated in four Vanier Cups, including the 1995 championship season under former head coach Peter Connellan. In 2006, Harris received the Gino Fracas Award recognizing the top volunteer coach in CIS football, and in 2014 he received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Dinos Fifth Quarter Association in recognition of nearly four decades of involvement with the program.

He was involved as an assistant coach with the Dinos in three separate stints between 1989 and 2014 and was defensive coordinator from 2011-14. Harris was head coach of the Calgary Colts from 1991-93, and he also spent 25 years as a coach in Calgary high school football at Sir Winston Churchill, Henry Wise Wood, and William Aberhart. His son, James, played as a linebacker for the Dinos in the mid-2000s.

Continued from Page 1 • The defensive effort was led by linebacker Grant McDonald, who picked up nine tackles and

a sack, while Deane Leonard added 5.5 tackles on the day • Wayne Harris: It has been a long time since we played McMaster, and they’re a very different

team. It will be a hard-fought battle – they have a very good defence, have held their opponent south of the end zone, and created field position for their offence. Their quarterback has played well, and they have balanced attack in terms of run versus pass. That’s something that we’re going to have to take care of to get a favourable outcome.”

No. 3 McMASTER MARAUDERS (8-2) Last week: defeated Western 29-15 • Third-year QB Andreas Dueck threw for 2,431 yards this season, the second-best total in the

country, with Tommy Nield his favourite target (38 catches, 498 yards, 3 TDs) • Linebacker Nate Edwards led McMaster with 45 tackles on the year, adding a pair of sacks in

the Yates Cup, while DB Noah Hallett’s four interceptions was third-best in Canada • Ptaszek rejoined the Marauders in 2019 after leading them from 2006-15, including three

Vanier Cup appearances in four years from 2011-14 and the 2011 national championship. • Stefan Ptaszek: “Calgary is pretty talented on offence, and their playmakers are crazy good.

Sinagra’s got a handful of receivers who can all make the big play. It’s a balanced attack. That big offensive line can carve holes, and they can run the ball as well as they can throw it. Their halfback play is spectacular and might be the best we’ve seen all year. Every level of the defence has solid, good kids on it. The defensive line, linebackers and secondary are all good. We’ll have to be who we are. We’ll play Marauder Football and let the chips fall where they may.”

2019 GAME-BY-GAME RESULTS 83rd Hardy Cup – November 9, 2019 Calgary 29 Saskatchewan 4

CALGARY –The University of Calgary Dinos put up a smothering defensive effort to capture the 18th Canada West championship in program history, defeating the Saskatchewan Huskies 29-4 in the 83rd Hardy Cup Saturday at McMahon Stadium.

It’s the ninth conference title in the last dozen years for the Dinos, and avenges the Huskies’ upset win on the same field in 2018.

Calgary’s defence, which has been the driving force for this team all season, was outstanding again, giving up just four points, forcing two turnovers, as well as stopping Saskatchewan on both their third down attempts.

“They bent a lot, but we didn’t let them in the end zone, and that was a real key,” said Dinos head coach Wayne Harris. “Our confidence continued to grow into the second half, we knew this game was going to come down right to the bitter end and it proved to be that way.”

Both defences came to play in the first half, as after two quarters of football the scoreboard read 4-1 for the Dinos.

The offences had their opportunities in the first half, with both offences being inside the opposing teams five-yard line, and coming away with zero points. For Calgary, a fumble by Calgary’s short-yardage quarterback Josiah Joseph on the Huskies’ one-yard line took almost sure points off the board, while Saskatchewan gambled at the end of the half, electing to go for the score from the two-yard line and seeing the pass attempt sail incomplete.

The Dinos finally put the ball in the end zone 5:20 into the third as Adam Sinagra would stood in, took a hit, and delivered his best throw of the game for a 30-yard touchdown strike to Tyson Philpot. It was also the last throw of the day for Sinagra, who was shaken up on the play and gave way to Josiah Joseph.

After the Huskies kicked their lone field foal of the game to make it a one score game, Joseph led a 10-play 75-yard drive that he finished off himself with a one-yard plunge.

A Niko DiFonte 37-yard field goal made it a three-possession game, and with the Saskatchewan offence unable to gain any traction all half, the Dinos added another Joseph touchdown for good measure in the dying seconds of the game to take the 29-4 lead.

While much of the talk was about the Saskatchewan star running back Adam Machart, who did have a solid day with 16 carries for 122 yards, the Dinos actually outrushed the Huskies 168 to 132 on the day. It was a team effort for the Dinos, as Robinson Rodrigues carried the ball 18 times for 98 yards, while Sinagra added 53 yards of his own, and Joseph had 27.

Deane Leonard and Grant McDonald were everywhere for the Dinos defence, each finishing with 5.5 tackles.

“What was the score? They got four points? Are you kidding me?” Sinagra said after the game. “For our defence to show up that big and hold us in it for the first half…offensively we didn’t do them any favours. I’m just so proud of everyone, the way we battled. Scoring on the first drive of the second half was huge for us, and it just set the momentum for the rest of the game.”

With the win, the Dinos will now turn their attention to the OUA Yates Cup champions, the McMaster Marauders, who they will host next weekend at McMahon Stadium in a national semifinal.

“We will have to go to study on McMaster, it has been a long time since we have seen them, and they were a much different team back then,” said Harris.

The U SPORTS Mitchell Bowl kicks off at 1 p.m. local next Saturday, Nov. 16.

NOTES: It’s the 154th Canada West championship in UCalgary history, the 18th in football, and the third so far in 2019-20 (men’s cross country, women’s soccer) … four is the lowest point total by a team in the Hardy Cup since 2010, when Calgary defeated Alberta 56-3 …the Dinos improve to 17-8 in Hardy Cup games, with the 18th title coming before the playoff was instituted in 1975 …

Canada West Semi-Final – November 2, 2019 Calgary 47 Manitoba 46

CALGARY – At the end of a wild contest, the University of Calgary Dinos snuck out an incredible 47-46 win over the Manitoba Bisons in a Canada West semifinal at McMahon Stadium Saturday, sending them to their 12th consecutive Hardy Cup game. The game had everything from back-to-back special teams touchdowns to a successful Hail Mary, and in the end it was an interception by Calgary’s Nick Statz at the goal line on a two-point convert try that kept the Dinos’ season alive. Down 47-40 with just six seconds left on the clock, Bisons quarterback Des Catellier scrambled right and heaved one towards the end zone where he had four receivers as well as a host of Dinos defenders waiting for the ball to arrive. The pass was batted down by one of the many outstretched hands, but it was batted right to the waiting arms of Bisons receiver Trysten Dyce who would take it in for the miraculous score with zeros on the clock. Manitoba, down 47-46, would try and use the momentum of the last second score to win the game outright, opting to got for the two-point conversion instead of kicking the extra point and heading into overtime. The Catellier throw on the conversion attempt was a little behind Dyce, and the ball would go through his hands and be picked off by Nick Statz, sealing the game for the Dinos. “No brainer,” replied Bisons head coach Brian Dobie after he was asked about the two-point decision at the end of the game. “We have played in a lot of overtimes, and any coach that would not go for two at that point is actually making a mistake.” Dobie’s team did have all the momentum, after a fourth quarter that saw them score 30 points and make a comeback after the Dinos looked like they were in clear control of the game. For as thrilling of a finish as it was, the game started off relatively slow with the score 3-1 Dinos after the first quarter. Both offences would find their stride in the second quarter, with the Dinos striking first on a nine-yard Jalen Philpot touchdown from Adam Sinagra. Manitoba would score their first major of the game just minutes later on a 4-yard run from Victor St. Pierre-Laviolette. Calgary ended the half with a 12-yard touchdown from one of Sinagra’s favourite targets, Hunter Karl, and took an 18-13 lead into half. The third quarter was the Dallas Boath quarter, as two touchdown receptions of six and 10 yards from the senior receiver would give the Dinos a 33-16 lead heading into the final frame. Cue the madness. Manitoba got the spark they were looking for in the form of a 97-yard punt return touchdown from Shae Weekes. Then, on the ensuing kickoff, Dinos returner Jalen Philpot, who was returning kicks for the first time this year, turned in a 97-yard return touchdown of his own to answer right back. Catellier, who was lights out all fourth quarter, then led back-to-back touchdown drives, throwing both, and the Bisons suddenly found themselves in a tie ball game, 40-40 with just 3:53 left. Sinagra would not be outdone though, orchestrating a long, clock-eating touchdown drive of his own. After a lengthy run from Robinson Rodrigues set the Dinos up deep in Bisons territory, Sinagra ran it in himself from nine yards out, giving the Dinos the 47-40 advantage, and setting the stage for the late game drama. Dinos head coach Wayne Harris was thrilled with the win, but knows that his team will need to improve as they head into the Hardy Cup next weekend. “We have a lot of corrections and fixes to make, but you have to tip your caps to Manitoba, they played their guts out and so did our guys.” Sinagra had a monster day, throwing for 285 yards and four touchdowns as well as running for 71 yards and a score. Robinson Rodrigues had 101 yards on 14 carries for the Dinos.

For Manitoba, Catellier had 224 passing yards in the fourth quarter alone to bring his total to 358 on the day. Dyce, the recipient of the Hail Mary, led all receivers on either side with 126 yards through the air. Grant McDonald was everywhere defensively for the Dinos, with 13 total tackles as well as a sack.
