Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (also known as motor neuron disease or Lou-Gehrig’s disease) is a progressive disorder that involves degeneration of the motor system at all levels. About 5 to 10% of all ALS cases are inherited The incidence of sporadic forms of ALS is between 1.5 and 2 per 100.000 population per year with males more usually affected than females (ratio approx. 1.6 to 1). The course of the disorder is inexorably progressive with 50% of the patients dying within 3 years of onset

About 5 to 10% of all ALS cases are inherited
