ABSTRACT

The focus of this research is on the design and implementation of access control system using fingerprint detection software. The basis of this implementation used is the waterfall model. The application is implemented using Visual basic programming language.

INTRODUCTION

Simply defined, the term "access control" describes any technique used to control passage into or out of any area. Access control systems are most commonly used to control entry into exterior doors of buildings.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF ACCESS CONTROL SYSTEM

The primary objective of access control is to preserve and protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information, systems, and resources. Confidentiality refers to the assurance that only authorized individuals are able to access data and systems without the authorized personnel access been compromised. Integrity refers to protecting the data from unauthorized modification. It's important that only the right people have access to the data, but it's also important that the data is the right data, and not data that have been modified either accidentally or on purposefully.

Fingerprint access control is one of the latest types of technology available. This technology once seemed exotic and far-fetched. Today, however, fingerprint access control is working and accessible to companies. Computerized scanners use biometrics to provide access to locations. With this type of system there is no need for keys or cards for entry. Nobody else except the intended person is able to gain access. Biometrics is the scientific way to uniquely recognize a person based on intrinsic physical properties. In most cases this is the fingerprint.
