----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TIPSTER #1: They do train but, they do give first preference to those who already have an AZ DPS SECURITY GUARD CARD and those with previous Law Enforcement or Military work histories are highly sought. “Does this mean that I have to have this to get a job?” No, but, it is the reality that if you already have a current guard card you can go through their internal training and be out on a security post a lot soon. Also, previous law enforcement or military experience takes everything to higher level of pre-training, qualifications and abilities to fill in at high profile security location(s). IF YOU DO NOT ALREADY HAVE A GUARD CARD DO NOT GO OUT AND GET ONE ON YOUR OWN. It really doesn’t work that way, it is expensive and you will still need to have the 8 hours of training ($40-100 cost…$40 is for bare bones training only and everything else is extra and done by you or the $100 is a full turnkey they do everything for you) by whoever hires you. SECURITAS TRAINS FOR FREE AND YOU ONLY PAY $72 FOR PROCESSING YOUR GUARD CARD THROUGH AZDPS. Before you start the process determine if you will qualify through AZDPS to receive a guard card. REMEMBER ALL FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE! Go to http://licensing.azdps.gov/Licensedisqualifiers.asp TIPSTER #2: Let’s face it; Securitas is the largest private security agency in the world and because of that their standards are higher than Uncle Bob’s Used Security Shack. The security some of the biggest companies here in the Phoenix

Page 7: Mister Thursday Night Special 5 June 2014

Metro Area and they need people who bring their “A” Game daily. So, truly, they only take the best.

BUT, SOMETIMES, THE BEST IS NOT THE MOST EXPERIENCED BUT THE MOST MOTIVATED! If you are a security guard want-to-be with little no actual security experience, walking through the door to this open house and present yourself with less than a driven “I want this job and here is why I would be a GREAT Candidate…” which means being on your best “A” Game, if you are not spruced up and looking sharp and/or are not interested in the company (you didn’t know anything about them or their history) and you have the attitude that “I don’t really want the job but, I might take this until something better comes along;” PLEASE STAY HOME because you are not who they are looking for and you would just get your feeling hurt over wasting your time. TIPSTER # 3: If you are a regular reader of the Used Job Shack then you are (by know) familiar with the new generation JOB SEEKING RULE #4. Then you already know what you need to get the full job descriptions…read it completely, several times…tear it apart…pull out all of the required skills/abilities and then, go through each of your jobs and match up what they need and what you have done… that’s only if you really want this job…Now fill out the application. For the sake of those who are NOT…here is a quick review.

RULE # FOUR (EXPERIENCE VS. SKILLS):

Page 8: Mister Thursday Night Special 5 June 2014

WITH MANY LARGE COMPANIES…it is important that you know that for the first two levels of review a real person does not see your application because the company’s computer system scans your application. The computer is a very bright 6 year old…very smart but, not a lick of logic. Getting selected for an interview is very difficult when the company screens your application with the computer and you do not have the cheat sheet (full job description). OK…YEA! We are talking (in general) about positions that require little or no experience…“So why make this so difficult?” “Why should I be worried?” The reason you should be concerned is that you are about to make a mistake that will cost you the chance to get hired eight out of ten times in this new job market. You have just made a bad technical error by assuming that you know better and that since experience is only preferred then “what difference does it make if you read the job description or if you cut-n-paste the job description from your killer

resume?” You are getting ready to make the tragic mistake of confusing experience with skills and abilities. You are correct that the positions may not require experience but they do (many times) require a lot

of skills. And if you really want to get hired, you must demonstrate to the employer that you do have the skills! (See the job below): “Previous experience preferred but not required…” "Integrity, Vigilance, and Helpfulness", represented by the three dots on our logo,

are qualities our employees are proud to demonstrate daily.

--------------------------------------------------

ANALYSIS: This job requires a lot of skill or ability to observe, report, ability to create documentation and to follow instructions. On the surface you may not see the relationship between what you did and what this job requires. Here is where you confuse experience with skill. You are bringing this to the conversation not the employer. Please show me where the job requires ___ years of experience observing, reporting or preserving order. It does not. So, (by you confusing this issue) you would be presenting yourself as unskilled and lacking in any or all of the 18+ skills and abilities that the employer needed because you confused experience with skills.

Re-read the job description and tell me if this employer is asking for experience or is looking for 18+ skills. If you are focused upon experience or that you believe that no experience is required “so I qualify automatically!” Or worse, “”that’s too much work and effort for this job…” Unless you explain to the employer that you do have the skills, how would they know? How would the computer know that as (say) a CASHIER, that you used the majority of those 18 skills on a daily basis? Did you or do you know that? Whatever you put on your application or in your resume become the only truth and information the employer will judge you by.

STILL CONFUSED…I SEE? Let’s break this down further so you really understand this as this is the most critical part of the application process and where 8 out of 10 people lose their chance to get interviewed, talk to a live person and get hired.

Page 12: Mister Thursday Night Special 5 June 2014

Let’s examine the various duties and see how they were a part of your everyday work life. Let’s start with (say) a CASHIER who has never been a security card but, he has 3-5 years of experience working in a retail store.

HERE IS THE CUT-N-PASTED JOB DESCRIPTION FROM HIS RESUME: 2009 – Present CASHIER, BIG BOX WALLYCO – Phoenix, AZ “Worked as a retail cashier operating a POS Electronic Cash Register, handled money and processed payments. Answered customer questions, did price checks and kept the register clean. Counted and balance cash door at end of shift. Sometimes opened or closed store and helped

with related paperwork.” OK! This is actually better than many of you have as a job description. But, does it show the employer that he has the NEEDED skills to be a security guard? How many of the 18+ skills did he list in her job details? If you were a computer screening for 18+ skills did you find any? So, would he qualify? Thought so! Only if the employer was his cousin and already knew that about his actual cashiering experience and could see how all of the 18+ skills were incorporated into his job because cashiering is a passive form of security.

HERE IS THE SAME RESUME

USING THE “USED JOB SHACK METHOD”:

Same person, same experience and skills but actual written from the understanding that the employer did not/does not understand the actual duties of a cashier.

Page 13: Mister Thursday Night Special 5 June 2014

2009 – Present CASHIER, BIG BOX WALLYCO – Phoenix, AZ “Working at the store’s front register, I was required to observe and report suspicious activities and incidents to my manager and if there was an incident, I was required to write a complete report, submit documentation or fill out required corporate, police or for insurance forms in the case of loss or damage. Provided for the security and safety of client property by checking for irregularities – inspected items, examined items being purchased to ensure that the price codes had not been switched or altered. Was required to preserve order and successfully deal with disruptive, angry or customers who might be impaired by drugs or alcohol and to provide for the security and safety of client (store’s) property while - providing for the security and safety of the store’s personnel. Controlled access to control merchandize that was either expensive or age restricted behind locked cabinets to prevent snatch-n-grab thieves. When not on the register, patrolled assigned site location within the store to inspect merchandise, practiced passive shop lifting prevention methodologies, checked and reported to the manager or the maintenance staff any unsafe conditions from improperly stacked merchandise, mechanical or equipment problems and/or hazards of wet floors to exposed wiring. Responded to incidents of broken, spilled merchandise or customer related emergencies (which required documentation of the event and reports to be written). Stocked, removed merchandise from assigned area (and the front-end of the store if on register) and restocked a wide range of merchandize that (many times) required the lifting and/or moving of merchandise up to 25+ pounds. Operating the store’s cash register (a POS Computer register) required excellent reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling to retrieve dropped merchandise or funds. Always operated the register required that the register be concisely checked, monitored and observed for any mechanical problems. Whenever there was a transaction with checks or credit cards it was vital that a check be made to insure that the purchaser(s) were authorized person(s) to use the credit card or verify that the card was not stolen…” ================================================================== Does it show the employer that she has the NEEDED skills to be a security guard? How many of the 18+ skills did she list in her job details? If you were a computer screening for 18+ skills did you find any? So, would she qualify? Thought so!

Seattle raises minimum wage to $15 an hour Martina Phelps says the Seattle City Council's historic vote Monday to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour could change her life. Phelps, 22, earns $9.47 per hour working for a McDonald's restaurant near downtown. She wants to move out of her mother's South Seattle home, and she wants to go back to school. She says those things could happen now that the city will have the nation's highest minimum wage. "It's hard right now," she told USA TODAY hours before the midafternoon vote. "I have been trying to save up for school, but I just can't do it. This would mean a lot." The council unanimously approved the measure before a packed house. The plan, which includes a lower training wage aimed at teenagers, will phase in the higher, local minimum over three to seven years, depending on the size of the business and benefits they provide employees. Next April 1, when the plan takes effect, every worker will get at least a $1-an-hour raise. City officials estimate that about a quarter of workers earn less than $15 an hour. Full-time work at that rate translates to about $31,000 a year. A trade group representing corporate franchises said it would sue to overturn the plan, saying it puts Seattle owners at a disadvantage to other small businesses. Washington already has the highest state minimum wage at $9.32 an hour, well above the federal minimum of $7.25. Seattle's Chamber of Commerce initially balked at the wage plan. Craig Dawson, CEO of Retail Lockbox in Seattle, was among those suggesting early on that small and minority businesses would be put at risk by the increase in personnel costs. Compromises were put forward, and a rancorous Council committee meeting last week resulted in some adjustments to the plan that appeared to pave the way for easy passage. "A year ago, $15 was just a number on fast food strikers' picket signs," Working Washington, a coalition of labor and community groups, said in a statement issued Monday. "Today it's set to become reality for 100,000 Seattle workers." Seattle venture capitalist Nick Hanauer, a key backer of the effort, says the city is a prosperous but costly place to live. "Fifteen dollars is a very conservative number that we know for certain the economy can support," he told the Los Angeles Times. “Fifteen is a good solid number for a place like this, but probably is too much for a small town in Arkansas where living costs are much, much, much lower." The ordinance was drafted by an advisory group of labor, business and non-profit professionals. In a contentious meeting last week, a City Council committee agreed to delay implementation of the ordinance to next April instead of Jan. 1. They rejected amendments

Page 16: Mister Thursday Night Special 5 June 2014

that would have sped up phase-ins and would have excluded tips from total compensation. The committee also approved a sub-minimum wage for teenagers. Businesses employing more than 500 workers would be required to pay $15 an hour by 2017, or 2018 if health care is offered. Smaller businesses would have five to seven years to phase in the increase. Part of employees' tips and benefits could be applied toward the higher minimum for as long as 11 years. The plan was approved unanimously by the City Council members at the meeting, indicating that passage into law was likely. "Seattle, and other cities, is taking direct action to close our nation's huge income gap because the federal and state governments have failed to do so," City Councilman Nick Licata said. "By significantly raising the minimum wage, Seattle's prosperity will be shared by more people and create a sustainable model for continued growth." A group called 15 Now is collecting signatures for a ballot measure that would hasten the timeline to $15 for all workers. The measure would amend the city's charter to create an immediate wage hike for large businesses, a three-year phase-in for organizations with fewer than 250 full-time employees, and the elimination of the training wage. 15 Now needs more than 30,000 signatures to make it on the ballot. Crystal Thompson, 33, told The Seattle Times she has been working at a local Domino's Pizza for five years and still makes minimum wage. She says her responsibilities have grown, and she sometimes is responsible for opening and closing the store.

=========================================================================

The HufPo article says minimum wage in 1968 was $1.60 per hour; TODAY'S equivalent would make that $10.74, adjusted for inflation…

What was your role, etc? • Tell me about a time you had to have a tough conversation with someone at work. • Tell me about a time you had to bring a co-workers performance up. • They will ask probing questions about additional actions you took, why you think

coworkers were acting in a particular way, etc. Make sure you're able to get as specific as possible about these situations and your actions in them. I passed and was immediately asked for possible dates for a final interview.

• Tell me about a time when you had a communication breakdown with a co- worker or with your team.

• Tell me about a time you had to have a tough conversation with a co- worker (exact question from the phone interview)

• What are your strengths? Give an example of a time you displayed this. • What are your weaknesses? What are you doing to work on this? • What are you doing for your personal and professional development?

Page 22: Mister Thursday Night Special 5 June 2014

• Tell me about a time when you didn't have all the answers or didn't know what to do next (this may be the most important question, because they told me they usually never get good answers to this. Luckily, mine was high scope and relevant)

• Tell me about a time when you had to plan out a project. ======================================================================= Barista - I applied online and the process took 1+ week Interview Details – Online application company wide, submit one first walking into a store to fill out a paper application is a wasted trip. Follow up in 1-3 days, ask for the store manager (not shift supervisor), or stop in and drop of a resume. More than one Starbucks manager has told me they always interview the people who care enough to follow up. Actual interview is rather standard, research Starbucks and stress customer service. Ultimately Starbucks is selling customer service in the disguise of coffee, if you are passionate about providing great service make sure your interviewer knows. Interview Question –

• Why do you want to work for Starbucks? ======================================================================= Barista - I applied online and the process took 2 weeks Interview Details – Online application - was contacted within a week by assistant store manager. Interviewed in store with manager, and had a second interview with another store manager at another location. The process is formal but not difficult. Most of the questions are feelers on how you handle working with others, working in a retail environment, and what kind of contributions you bring to the store. Interview Question –

• Name a time where someone was disappointed or dissatisfied with your work. • How did you react to this situation and what would you do to remedy it?

========================================================================== Shift Supervisor Interview - I applied online and the process took 4+ weeks Interview Details – Had an interview with the store manager of my home store. I had a second interview with a neighboring Starbucks manager. Typical questions such as "Tell me about a time when you coached an employee and the outcome." A few days after the second interview, I got a call from the first manager with an offer in which I accepted. It took my process 30 days to complete because I had requested to put in a two weeks’ notice at my previous job before I started. The process probably would've only taken 2 weeks instead of 4 if not for the circumstance. The onboarding process is done before your actual first day of work. It usually takes 3-5 hours and consists of filling out paperwork such as the I9 and W4 forms. You do get paid for working the onboarding process. You also do a coffee tasting during that time and will spend a majority of it reading company policy materials, safety concerns etc.

Page 23: Mister Thursday Night Special 5 June 2014

They will provide you your aprons at that time as well. My barista training is taking place in another store. How long you are in the training process depends on how fast you can learn. What they mistakenly forgot to tell me tell me during my offer is that during your initial "training" period you do not get any portion of the tips because you are technically not "contributing" to the stores profit! I think that was pretty shady of them to tell me after the fact, so I feel like that is something that should be addressed. Interview Question –

• Tell me about a time when you thought you were not going to complete a project or projects on time.

• What did you do to try to meet the deadline?" =========================================================== 1670 E. Camelback Rd. Phoenix, AZ 85016 (602) 279-0540

TIPSTER: “Submissions are reviewed on a rolling basis.” This means that if they haven’t had any one come in and impress them, they may (if they have to) start going through these online applications. If you REALLY want to work with animals and with people who think like you, then, do yourself a big favor and make yourself a master of this place (what they do, how they do and what makes them successful). Then fill out the online applicant, dress like you would to work there and go over at a non-peak time to introduce yourself to a manager and/or the staff. TIPSTER #2: Make a dry run over there at a busy time and watch and observe:

• Observe the customer traffic through the store to get an idea as to how busy or rushed you would be if you worked there.

• Observe if the staff is helpful. Are they smiling and working with the customers? • Get a basic feel for the layout of the store – where everything is. • Look at how organized the store is. Is there plenty of merchandise on the shelves? Is the

merchandise neat and organized? Are the displays attractive and have curb appeal? • Is the manager on the floor? Is the manager helping or watching the staff?

Go to Yelp to read the consumer reviews for the store. Take some notes about what people like and complained about. Review all your INTEL. Do you like what you saw? If so, go back dressed similar to what the sales associates were wearing (or just clean clothes) and introduce yourself and impress them with how serious you are! ==========================================================================

ONET ONLINE ALERT! STEP TWO: Take your time to do the application completely. Remember, this application represents the quality of your work. If it is sloppy, incomplete or done wrongly, then the employer will see you as that. How well you include the key words and phrases into your application will determine if you

get called or not. REMEMBER (this is a key point) THEY ARE NOT LOOKING FOR EXPERIENCE (and the computer will not see it) BUT, THEY ARE LOOKING FOR SKILLS AND ABILITIES WHILE THE COMPUTER IS ONLY SEARCHING FOR KEY WORDS. STEP THREE: Do yourself a big favor and get out there (during non-peak hours) to introduce yourself and ask them to pull your application (they can if they like you). Remember, the employer expects you to show up and introduce yourself if you are serious about the job. If you aren’t or don’t the employer will not bother with you. ===================================================

FROM THE DESK OF WOLFIE “WILL” BITEYU PhD.

WHY THE TRADITIONAL COVER LETTER AND RESUME NEED TO DIE… Even a casual reader of the Used Job Shack will know how a killer resume can do just that to your job search at the entry or re-entry level. As many of you are finding out that, the resume is unneeded and unwanted for employers at the entry level. Entry-level jobs are just that, entry level. They many times hire 16-18 year olds for these jobs so why would they need a blank resume.

Page 40: Mister Thursday Night Special 5 June 2014

Why experience is not required, many times skills are required. So, at best, you might want to find out what skills the employer needs and make a list of how you meet what the employer’s needs. This might be useful to helping you to sell yourself as the person the employer needs. Then again, every moment you spend creating this list and e-mailing/faxing it to the employer is another barrier to you getting that job. Time is critical and this employer (they wanted you to apply in person) is going to hire the first person who shows up and impresses them with that they are serious and that they really want the job. This is a fact (we have a book that proves that) and if you waste a moment, by trying to create a resume or in applying by an e-mail that the employer will not have time to read, then someone else will get your job. If you are doing your job search job correctly because you know when and where to be looking for new entry level jobs, you take several minutes to study their website before heading out to camp on the employer’s doorstep then, you do have a good chance of coming home with that new job. You know all this already. Now here is the kicker, the workforce establishment is finally listening to us and (even at the professional, corporate level) they are rethinking the worth of killer resumes and cover letters. Really! They are doing this as we speak. Here is a revolutionary article that finally agrees with us about how the traditional resume will cost you more jobs than it will ever get you. (Most of us here at the Job Shack will tell you that is true as we have been there and done that) Read this article and understand that they are talking to people who work in big corporate offices and boardrooms. Some of their suggestion, we will be looking at to see if they work at the entry level. It is time to bury the stuffy, outdated resume and cover letter that haunts job seekers and hiring managers alike. Here is what we should be doing instead. The resume is old. IT IS REALLY OLD. There is evidence that Leonardo da Vinci wrote the first resume in 1482 to the Duke of Milan. More than 500 years later, isn't it time to rethink the traditional resume?

Page 41: Mister Thursday Night Special 5 June 2014

A recent article in New York magazine calls for the death of the traditional application packet, and we might have to agree. Here is why it is time to make the cover letter and resume obsolete, and how to break from the old ways: THEY’RE FULL OF UNRELIABLE INFORMATION Crafting a 100% accurate resume is as difficult as writing a completely honest self-appraisal: You can only be so insightful when it comes to your own personal ability. All the introspection you can muster will still produce skewed observation. Everyone plays well with others and is highly motivated in a fast-paced environment, on paper. You may feel “proficient" in CSS but there’s no way of knowing if you’re up to the skill level your future employer needs, based on a resume alone. Moreover, you will likely have to leave out parts of your skills or gloss over weaknesses to make your resume both readable and strong in the right places. Similarly, the average cover letter is full of hot air. We are forced to explain why we are just dying to devote our lives to one company, and use strings of descriptors as if we are writing our own report cards. Everyone plays well with others and is highly motivated in a fast-paced environment, on paper. The Fix: Requesting examples of work, project pitches, or giving test tasks that replicate real job duties are better gauges of ability than the applicant’s own words. THEY MAKE US UNINTENTIONALLY BIASED Studies show that the pronounceability of your name--or non-Westernization, in essence--affects employers’ bias toward candidates. Nevertheless, the assumptions do not stop there: We project biases based on location, prestige of education, race, and personal life factors. If you are a black woman and state-school graduate from the Midwest, you will have a harder time finding work than a single white Ivy League male--even if your application materials are identical. Those in authority are more likely to ignore requests from women and minorities, studies show. Moreover, if you are a minority, you are given less slack in writing errors. This does not mean the reader is a racist or malicious, per se, but brings to light the “confirmation bias,” defined by a recent Nextions study on the impact of racial bias on evaluation: A mental shortcut--a bias--engaged by the brain that makes one actively seek information, interpretation and memory to only observe and absorb that which affirms established beliefs while missing data that contradicts established beliefs. The Fix: Forgoing the cover letter and resume would cut down on information on which we naturally form these biases--leveling the playing field. Anonymizing application material in early stages of judgment can help give everyone a more fair chance. THEY’RE A TIME SUCK Applicants spend days putting together a perfect application packet, and hiring agents spends weeks sifting through candidates’ materials, through all of the hyperbolic phrasing and degrees of design clarity, to fill a single position. Most of the time, its clunky work for all involved--and you still might not end up with the right person for the job. A bad hire can cost a company more than $50,000 in resources.

Page 42: Mister Thursday Night Special 5 June 2014

With all of that time and effort, streamlining the process in early, easily culled stages cannot hurt. The Fix: Many companies opt now for an online survey-based application, where skills and scenarios are presented before a resume even hits the table. In lieu of a cover letter, some ask for an “about me” section in 140 characters--the length of a tweet--to evaluate creativity and concision under constraint. If we lean less on the traditional application packet process, social networks take more of the judgment; candidate's Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter presences could give more accurate glimpses into the lives of the newest member of the company culture. In-House Training At present the major concern is turnover of trained personnel in this field. We aim to attract qualified, committed and professional people by offering them competitive salaries in-order for them to feel that they are adequately compensated for the important job that they do and also for the agency to retain trained and competent employees. We will pay our providers on time, ensure that the rates they get are very competitive and also assist them to take care of their taxes and exemptions.
