overnment photographs are often designed to document a moment:politicians meeting with their constituents; a governor signing a bill;the dedication of a new bridge; a landscape being changed. Yet, itis amazing how the patina of time suddenly makes these rather or-

dinary photographs more interesting. The constituent proves a key figurein a corruption scandal; the minor aide at the governor’s side later becomesa powerful United States Senator; at its end the Missouri River bridge be-comes controversial; the clear cut Bootheel landscape is drained and plantedin cotton. More routinely, photographs of cars, houses, or clothing becomequaint, and evocative of a way of life now lost.

State government, at its photographic best, however, encourages artful andarresting images. Thisis very much the casewith the photographsof Gerald Massie, whoserved as Missouri’sofficial state photogra-pher between 1945and 1972. His Octo-ber induction intoMissouri’s Photojour-nalism Hall of Fame isa testament to his tal-ent and to his drive tocreate unique imagesof his state. The

Missouri State Archives is proud to serve as the principal repository of hisphotographs. (See article, p. 4)

The photograph and print collection of the Missouri State Archives containsmore than 400,000 visual images, and enjoys impressive growth each year asmore photographs are found and transferred into our holdings. To show offsome of the highlights from the collection we opened a building-wide ex-hibit entitled, “Missouri Memories: A History in Photographs” on December 7 (see cover story), and over the next few years we will be mak-ing many thousand photographs available on our Web site. But even thesecan only hint at the richness and depth of our collection. We cordially in-vite you to come and see for yourself.

Sincere Regards,

formation Center. The three floors of the StateInformation Center, which houses the Archives, will display sixty-three unique historic imagesgrouped thematically as “Rural Missouri,” “Lakeof the Ozarks,” “Missourians on the Move,” andincludes a few striking selections from the Louiseand Omar Putman Collection from the 1940s.The building is open Monday through Friday8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

No single exhibit, of course, could represent thedepth or breadth of the Archives’ images, whichcurrently number more than 400,000. This visualrecord comes primarily from state government of-fices and departmental agencies, but has been en-riched by donations from individual Missourianswith family, organiza-tion and communitycollections.

The medium ofphotography is an im-portant method ofdocumenting our in-dustry, culture, recre-ation and the naturallandscape, and astime passes the con-temporary photo-graph becomes a per-manent record. Byproviding a window to the past, this exhibit illus-trates history, with the expected result of eithersurprising you with something you did not know, reminding you of something you did or charmingyou with the unexpected.

We hope you are able to visit the InformationCenter to view Missouri Memories during comingmonths. Exhibit brochures will be available fromthe reception desk located at the entrance to the

State Photographer Gerald R.Massie Inducted into Photo -journalism Hall of Fame

erald R. Massie, Missouri’s official statephotographer for almost 30 years, was in-ducted into the Missouri Photojournal-

ism Hall of Fame in Washington, Missouri, onOctober 19, 2006. Massie was one of six newinductees recognized for their contributions toMissouri journalism and their visual point ofview. Inductees were nominated on the basis of

their achieve-ment, technicalinnovation andintegrity. Theirwork will bedisplayed at themuseum at No.8 SecondStreet, in his-toric down-town Washing-ton, Missouri.

The Photojour-nalism Hall ofFame originat-ed with thedesire of BillMiller, Sr., edi-

tor and publisher of the Washington Missourian,to make certain that photojournalists in Missouriwere acknowledged for their talent. In Septem-ber of 2003, Miller reached out to professionalassociations including the Missouri Press Associa-tion and the University of Missouri School ofJournalism to make his dream a reality. He hadno problem getting newspaper professionals ex-cited about this idea, and in October of 2005,the first eight inductions were made into theHall of Fame.

According to Professor David Rees, of the MUSchool of Journalism, what makes the inducteesstand out from other photographers is their abili-

ty to understand the world and communicatewhat they see to others. Massie began communi-cating his particular point of view at the age often with his first camera, a $1.98 Brownie. Bornin Clinton, Missouri, in 1911, Massie’s journeytook him to the Clinton Eye newspaper in highschool, the Kansas City Star as a journeymanlinotype operator, and then to Europe in WorldWar II as an aerial photographer. He finally set-tled in Jefferson City with his wife, Henrietta, and began working for the state in 1945 at thenewly formed Resources and Development Com-mission. As chief photographer for this division,Massie had the opportunity to develop hisunique perspective, using different lenses, film, flashes and cameras.

Massie died in 1989, leaving a large body ofwork that documents Missouri’s beautiful land-scapes, industry, and agricultural practices, as wellas several historical events. Representing him atthe induction ceremony was his daughter Kath-leen Pierce, her husband and Massie’s two grand-children Kristin and Justin Pierce. Massie’s wid-ow, Henrietta, and their son Dan both reside inJefferson City. In her remarks to the crowd,Kathleenthanked her fa-ther for givingher and Dan theopportunity totravel Missourion many occa-sions, and to becast as subjectsin many of hisphotographs. She said that herfather always in-sisted on twothings: that hissubjects wearred, and thatthere be lots ofbeautiful cloudsin the photograph. If there were no clouds on aparticular day, Massie was not above adding themhimself in the darkroom.

Presented in Partnership with the MissouriDepartment of Corrections

This one-person play written and performed byPaxton J. Williams makes use of extensive researchto tell the story of one of the truly inspiring menof the twentieth century. Born into slavery near Diamond, Missouri, George Washington Carverendured a difficult and dangerous childhood butlater acquired an excellent education that compli-mented his innate under-standing of botanical sci-ence. Invited to joinBooker T. Washington’sInstitute, Carver becameknown as the “Wizard ofTuskegee” and virtuallyrevolutionized the south-ern agrarian economy byfreeing it from continueddependence on cotton.Carver’s more than 300uses for the peanut, andhundreds more for soy-beans, were simply part ofhis desire to “fill the poorman’s empty dinner pail.” He largely refused topatent or profit from his many inventions andproducts.

Missouri Courthouses: Building Memories on the Square January 18, 2007, 7:00 p.m.

Dennis Weiser will discuss his new book, a picto-rial review of Missouri’s 114 county courthouses.Over three hundred images richly illustrate por-traits of existing exteriors, architectural featuresand unique interior elements of design, as well aspictures of courthouses long ago removed fromthe landscape.

From the earliest log structures to the 19 court-houses con-structed inMissouri underthe PublicWorks Adminis-tration(1934–1941), tothe currenttrend of build-ing annexes thatsave the court-house proper for

administrative or judicial functions, our court-houses are true public service buildings. Eachmust meet very real public demands for accessibil-ity and increased response, while managing tomeet citizens’ more romantic notions of “what acourthouse should look like.”

Special Appreciation for E-Volunteers on the Missouri DeathCertificate Database ProjectPublic interest and patron demand for the Death Certificate Online Database remains very strong eightmonths after its initial release with 3.5 million hits reached thus far. The database now connects to scannedcertificates from 1910 through 1929, with imaging of 1930 certificates well underway. For those yet to bescanned, the Archives reference staff received over 9,000 pieces of mail asking for nearly 35,000 copied cer-tificates between April and October of this year.

The Friends of the Missouri State Archives also provides an expedited service for those who wish to haveunscanned death certificates located and copied quickly—generally in one to two weeks (http://www.friend-sofmsa.org/support/menu.htm). For a fee of $5 per name, those desiring unscanned copies of death certifi-cates may ask for as many requests as they please.

Thus far, the Friends have received over 2,600 expedited copy requests. All fees generated from theFriends’ service will be dedicated exclusively to the Death Certificate project. Regular Archives referenceservices continue to be available for $1 per request with the following parameters: a limit of five names perrequest form and an estimated eight to ten week response time for receipt of copies due to continued highdemand.

For more information, visit: http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates.

The certificates are prepared for scanning by 38 local in-house volunteers. These invaluable volunteershave already worked over 4,300 hours. We are grateful for their service.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank each of the nearly 600 E-Volunteers across the nationwho worked to bring the database effort to completion; without them, the project would not resemble itspresent form. The volunteers listed below have contributed a combined 27,400 hours of indexing and dataentry to build this valuable genealogical and social history resource.
