words. Still he could not continue. Finally, he said loudly, “my dearfriends and teachers, what I saidwas not the actual story. I made itup as I forgot the story. Pleaseforgive me.”

As he was leaving, the Headmasterapproached him, took him out of theroom and said, “Don’t worry, child, the story you said was nice”. Heappreciated the boy’s honesty. Laterthe headmaster gave a beautifulgift to the boy for faithfulness.”

Founder of Y M E F

Cherian liked his job very much andwas a dedicated teacher. At the same

time his desire was to do somethingfor his Master. He loved to sing:

“I will serve the Lord till my lastbreath” -

“anthyashwasam pomvare thanvelacheyyum njaan, thruppadaseva cheyyum njaan.”.

In those days there was a Christianfellowship named Y.M.C.A (YoungMen’s Christian Association) whichconsisted of elderly people from allthe churches.

Cherian joined their group as amember. They used to arrangegospel trips, house visits, open airmeetings, tract distribution, etc.but that was conducted only oncein a year. They were moreinterested in social work. Cherianwas the only young man amongthem.

One day, a thought came toCherian’s mind: “why don’t we starta men’s fellowship for the spiritualedification of the youth?” The onlyproblem was how to gather theyoung men together. He spent manyhours placing this matter before theLord in prayer.

There was a coconut farm near hisschool where he spent a lot of timeplacing this matter before the Lord. There were many questions in hismind. How to conduct a youngmen’s fellowship? What allactivities could include in it? Whatwould be the consequences?

After days and nights of prayer, he

decided to discuss the matter withhis close friends. Almost all of themwere his fellow teachers. Althoughmany thought it was a good idea, some of them did not agree. Finally, they decided to have a meeting witholder spiritual men to discuss aboutit.

The meeting was on 14th June 1941at 8 pm at Kuriannoor BrethrenAssembly. About 10 believersattended and spent lot of time inprayer. During the meeting,Cherian shared the need of a YoungMen’s fellowship. In his message hementioned that there were a lot ofvillages waiting to hear the gospel. In those days the gospel work wascarried out mainly by foreignmissionaries.

All those assembled there agreedwith his proposal and decided tostart a fellowship for the youth. They named it ‘Y.M.E.F.’ (YoungMen’s Evangelical Fellowship). Thiswas started to encourage the Youthand spread the Gospel throughoutIndia and all over the world.

Since then, many youth camps, gospel rallies and open air meetingshave been organized under thebanner of Y.M.E.F. M.E. Cherianwrote more than a hundred songsfor the growth and edification of theyouth. Today, Y.M.E.F has spread toall the states of India, the Gulf andmany other countries. God used‘Kochu sir’ for the establishment ofY.M.E.F all through the world.

A desire for Gospel work

As a boy, Cherian used to go toSunday school. As soon as helearned to read, he completedreading the Bible with in a fewmonths. He was very eager toknow the truths of the Bible. Aswe mentioned earlier, at the ageof nine, he accepted Jesus Christas his personal Savior. He alsoorganized a prayer group at school. He used to travel with his fatherfor gospel work and often sharedhis testimony and thoughts fromthe Bible. He started teaching theSunday school children. But hehad a desire to go for full-timeministry.

Even while teaching, he oftenthought of leaving his job andgoing for full-time ministry.

One Thursday, he decided to leaveschool and go back home. Heplanned to send his resignationletter after reaching home. Hepacked all his belongings in atrunk and walked around 30 kmto his home. As he began hisjourney, he was excited about whathe was going to do.

However, while walking, he wasdisturbed by various thoughtsconcerning his future. The mainquestions that bothered him werewhere and how to start the gospelwork.

By the time he reached home, hewas very tired, both mentally andphysically. His father was surprisedto see him early. Normally, he usedto reach home on Friday evening orSaturday.

His father asked, “Why did youcome early this week?” M.E.Creplied, “I just wanted to see youboth.” Since he was not fullyprepared to make a commitment, hewent back to school the next day. Then he took a decision not to gofor Gospel work unless God clearlycalled him.

He continued teaching for sevenmore years.

He decided not to tell anybodyexcept the Lord of his needs, even ifhe and his family had to starve forthe sake of the Gospel. This was hisprayer

In these days of trials andtemptation, he did not want tochange his mind. Instead, hesubmitted everything to the handsof Almighty God.

He began distributing tracts topeople in public places such asrailway stations, hospitals, marketsand especially at MaduraiMeenakshi temple when thefestival seasons occurred.

Establishment of work

MEC stayed in rented houses indifferent locations of Madurai withhis family. Finally they have renteda house in a street called ‘172 WestMasi Street’ for the sake of gospel. Many souls came to the Lord.

MEC knew that it is essential tohave their own land and buildingfor the establishment of assemblyworks there. He started prayingthis matter with the saints overthere.

Soon he received a registered letterand the sender was unknown. Butit was clearly mentioned in the let-ter that the amount should be usedonly for buying a land for the churchbuilding. That was a clear guidancefrom God and they could experiencethe magnificent provisions of God forHis children. Praise the Lord!

Thus a building was constructedwith two rooms attached to stay.New souls came to the Lord and theyattended the assembly meeting joy-fully.

Madurai Bible school

MEC’s greatest desire was thatevery corner of Tamil Nadu shouldbe reached with God’s Word. He alsowanted to establish new assemblies. In 1956, he started a Bible School inMadurai. The aim of the school wasto teach youth from the Word of Godand equip those who had a concernfor perishing souls.

He wanted to send them to differentparts of Tamil Nadu to share theGospel. So, he rented a house in

West Masi Street. It had two smallrooms and a small hall. MEC, hiswife, four sons and three daughtersstayed in one room and theremaining house was used as the‘Madurai Bible School’. Thestudents used the hall as theirdormitory. MEC’s wife Mariyammacooked for her family as well as theBible school students.

As the students increased day byday, it became difficult toaccommodate all of them together. So He prayed for God to provide abigger place for them. God answeredtheir prayer and enabled them tobuy a plot of land. There, theyconstructed a building and namedit ‘Bible Bhavan’‘Bible Bhavan’‘Bible Bhavan’‘Bible Bhavan’‘Bible Bhavan’. This is still theretoday in Madurai. If you go there, you can see “Bible Bhavan’ standingas a testimony to God’s faithfulness.

Starting of SuvisheshakanBala Sangam

Earlier, we had said that MECenjoyed reading the newspaper.MEC used to read the MalayalamManorama from the time he wassmall. But he was not able to read

Page 29: Missionary M E Cherian

STORY BOARDthe Malayalam news at Madurai. So he made arrangements with thepostal department to send him theMalayalam Manorama daily.

Whenever he received the paper, hewould first look at the children’ssection. He noticed that, while therewere many opportunities forchildren to develop themselves inthe secular world, there wasnothing in the spiritual world.

He remembered Mathew 19:14 inwhich Jesus said, “…Let the littlechildren come to me, do not hinderthem for the kingdom of God belongto such as these”.

As a teacher, MEC liked childrenvery much and wanted to dosomething useful for them. However, he didn’t want to committo this because he knew that hiscalling was to be an evangelist. Butat the same time, he wanted tospread the Gospel of Jesus Christamong the children and also givethem opportunities at an early ageto develop their natural talents inthe spiritual realm. So he prayedand planned to start a magazinenamed ‘PITHAL’.

In those days, one had to getapproval from the Government ifthey wanted to start a magazine.Due to the Second World War, therewas a scarcity of paper, and thegovernment did not give permissionto start the Magazine “PITHAL”.But he continued to pray that Godwould make a way.

In 1953, with the help of Br. P.K.Mathews and Br. C.V. Samuel, hestarted a Magazine named‘Suvesheshakan’ ‘Suvesheshakan’ ‘Suvesheshakan’ ‘Suvesheshakan’ ‘Suvesheshakan’ (The Evangelist). In this publication, there werealways a few pages with activitiesand articles for children.

In the first edition, he wrote abouthis desire for children. He stated: “Ifwe light a candle in one room it willgive a little light. But if we light ten,it will give enough light. In the sameway, we want to start aSuvisheshakan BalasangamSuvisheshakan BalasangamSuvisheshakan BalasangamSuvisheshakan BalasangamSuvisheshakan Balasangam(SBS)with the help of your talents”. Thatwas the beginning of theSuvisheshakan Balasangam.

Students began registering for itfrom different parts of Kerala. As thenumbers increased, the childrenbegan coming together to havefellowship with many kinds ofprograms. MEC’s brother T.E.Easow was a great help in all thesematters.

One day, a man named T.K. Yohananbrought his sick son John Kurien fortreatment at Madurai.Unfortunately, John died atMadurai. He had been an activemember in the SuviseshakanBalasangam and accepted JesusChrist through it. He had the greathope that he would be with the Lordforever. So his parents decided tosupport SuvisheshakanBalasangam. They gave 100 rupeeswhich was a big amount in thosedays.

It helped them to start a generalcamp. In 1959, the first camp ofSuvisheshakan Balasangam startedat Kallisery. It played a great rolein molding the young ones to excelin the spiritual field.

Today, it is well established in Indiaand throughout the world. There arethousands of youngsters all over theworld giving out the light of JesusChrist just because of the light theyreceived from SBS and VBS. That’swhy today you are here!

MEC had eight children – five boysand three girls. He brought them allup in the fear of the Lord.

Proverbs 22: 6 says, “Train up a child

in the way he should go and whenhe is old he will not depart from it.”This was one verse that he practiced.

He loved and cared for his childrenbut also disciplined them whennecessary. Later, one of his sonsshared an incident in his testimony.MEC had kept some money in hisshaving kit. Later on, when he wentto look for that money, it was notthere. He called his youngest son,Thomas, and kindly asked him,“Son, where is that money?” Thomasreplied, “I don’t know” When MECstarted spanking him, Thomasconfessed that he had taken themoney. One of his guests waswatching them. Later on, he askedMEC why he had beaten his child.MEC replied that if he had notpunished him at that time, Thomaswould repeat it again and make hisfather ashamed. This is why hecorrected his son immediately.

They had daily family prayer in themorning and evening. Even thoughMEC was often away from home, hiswife, Mariamma, would make surethat they continued to have prayerat home.

His desire was that all his childrenwould continue serving the Lord. From the time they were small.MEC talked to them about the Lordand made His presence real in theirlives. Today, all of them are servingthe Lord in different ways.

STORY BOARDMEC had a printing press so thatChristian magazines could beprinted without any hindrances. Itwas called SUVISESHAKAN press.Today, his eldest son James Cherianis its publisher. Many magazines indifferent languages are printedthere. His second son is involved with theassembly and the Bible School inMadurai.

MEC knew that people enjoylistening to songs and that theywould be helpful in his ministry too.God had given his children theability to sing. He wanted to use thisfor the glory of God. This desire grewin his heart, and in 1979 he starteda group called ‘Happy Melody‘Happy Melody‘Happy Melody‘Happy Melody‘Happy Melody.’.’.’.’.’ Histhird son, Titus Cherian, isresponsible for Happy Melody today.

His forth and fifth son ThomasCherian (Tomy) and Jose along withtheir family are doing His work inrespective places.

His daughters and their husbandsare also doing the Lord’s work invarious parts of India. MEC couldtruly say “As for me and my family,we will serve the Lord.”

Death of his beloved wife.

Behind the success of every man isa woman. This was true in MEC’slife. His wife Mariamma Cherianwas a praying woman who sup-ported him as a godly wife.

There are many incidents in whichshe exercised her faith in God. Oneof their sons had small pox when hewas about 1 ½ years old. In thosedays it was a dangerous and oftenfatal disease.

The Health inspector heard aboutit and came to take the baby to thehospital. MEC was not at home andhis wife didn’t have enough moneywith her. She also knew that if thebaby was taken to the hospital, hemight not come back safely. So shekept her baby on her lap and prayedto the Lord. The All-powerful Godhealed him, and today he is doingthe Lord’s ministry.

As MEC was away from home mostof the time doing the Lord’s work, his wife had the great responsibil-ity to look after their eight children, taking care of their health, studies, and spiritual matters.

There were days when she didn’thave enough money to buy provi-sions for the family. Without mur-muring, she would kneel down andask for help from above. She was thebest helpmeet and partner for MEC.

In every circumstance she wouldsay “Don’t worry; be courageous;God will provide for us.” It com-forted MEC a lot.

She also was a good sister andfriend to those who came to her forhelp. She served the Lord and Hischildren whole heartedly. She was agreat mother to their children.

There is a story said about fourbrothers talking about which En-glish translation of the bible theyliked best.

The first one said that he liked the“authorized translation.”

The second one said that he likedthe “Simplified translation.”

The third one who also wanted tosay something said he liked the“American Standard Translation.”

Very calmly, with a sweet voice, thefourth one said, “I love my“Mother’s translation.”

The other three wondered, “What! You love the mother’s translation? What does that mean?”

He replied, “My mother is practic-ing God’s word in her day-to-daylife. This is what I like the most andthat’s the real translation.”

The other three understood what hemeant. This literally happened inthe life of Mariamma Cherian.

After living for 42 years together, she was called back to her eternalhome.

His contributionBecause MEC devoted his life toGod, the Lord used him in manyways. He was also a man of prayer. He enjoyed spending time with theLord and His Word, in personalBible study and Evangelism.

One of the verses that thrilled hissoul was 1 Cor. 15:58 in which Paulsays, “Therefore, my beloved breth-ren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of theLord, forasmuch as ye know thatyour labor in the Lord is not invain.”

This was his greatest desire: thathe work more and more for the Lordand not spend his time in vain.

He was a gifted public speaker andGod sent him to various parts of theworld with the Gospel and Bibletruths. His contributions to theworld were many. Some of them arementioned here.

As a poetHe was a poet. From his childhoodhe used to write poems. Once whilewatching his lazy younger brothershe recited:

“kappakku chikkedo, pullu

pariyedo ellaarum inganeninnitaathe”

This is how it began. His creativemind, vocabulary and godlinesshelped him to write more poems. These were later published as threevolumes named "V"V"V"V"Vaanoli" "Paadatheaanoli" "Paadatheaanoli" "Paadatheaanoli" "Paadatheaanoli" "PaadathePraavu" Praavu" Praavu" Praavu" Praavu" and "Makane V"Makane V"Makane V"Makane V"Makane Varu"aru"aru"aru"aru".Through his poetry, both the spiri-tual and secular world had access tomany spiritual truths.

Songs out of life ExperienceSongs play an important role ineverybody’s life. They give peace, comfort, and happiness. MECstarted writing songs at the age of20.He wrote more than 300 songs bothin Malayalam and Tamil which havegiven comfort, courage and strengthto different people in diverse circum-stances like marriage, sorrow, troublesome days, sickness, and evenat the time of death bed.

He was able to see the hand of Godin all situations and was able to com-municate this through song. Almostall his songs are famous and are stillsung today.

Contribution to the prose worldHe presented 11 literatures to thespiritual world. His writing wassimple in order that everyone couldread and understand it. His articleswere focused, showed his knowledgeof the truth, and his vision. He oftenused his own life experiences in hisarticles as well. It usually speaks tothe mind.

His first article was “Church andchurches” It was not about the de-nominational churches like Breth-ren, Pentecost, Marthoma Catholic

or CSI. Today, we see lots of churchesaround us with different names. Butthis Church means “called out ones”or group of saved ones.

As an evangalistHe was an evangelist and an elderof the local assembly. As an evange-list he travelled to many places. Hevisited almost all states of India anda few places outside India too.

He had many interesting experi-ences. Once, while on a missionarytour to Dallas from New York, one ofhis suitcases with his passport, re-turn ticket, Bible and all other trav-elling documents were exchangedwith a similar bag. There were only15 minutes left for his flight to leaveNew York. When he explained hisproblem to the police officers, theytold him that somebody on a flightto Athens may have taken his bag. There were more than 300 travelers

in that flight. The officers took himthere and told him to find his bag. There were only ten minutes for hisflight to leave.

Without any hesitation he held upthe bag he had and announced “Dearfriends, please help me, this bag isnot mine. One of you have taken mybag. Please give it back to me as Ihave a flight to Dallas in five min-utes. Please help me”. The police of-ficer told him “Sir, all these peopleare Greek. They probably do notknow English. They will not followwhat you say.”

Do you know what he did? He criedout to God, “God, please help me. Idon’t know Greek. Don’t forget me.Please help me”.

Suddenly one old lady came near tohim with his bag and apologized. Hewas filled with joy so he said, “Praisethe Lord; Halleluiah” a couple oftimes with a loud voice. Suddenlyfour travelers surrounded him andsaid, “Halleluiah” and asked him“crishyan? crishyan?” (“Christian?Christian?”) MEC replied “Yes,Christian.” They kissed him andshook his hand. Everybody ap-plauded. MEC also said “Halleluiah”in a loud voice and rushed to catchhis flight.

The end and beginning ofa little man“My days are numbered” was theusual phrase of MEC in the year1993. Just as the candle burnsbrighter before it burns out, MECwanted his life to give more lightthose days, before it ended. Thiswas his desire.

He also did not want to be bedrid-den but be active doing the Lord’swork till the last minute of his life.

On August 18 he came back fromhis trip to the USA. More than 100fellow believers and family mem-bers were waiting to receive him atthe airport. He came back and thenwent to see his eldest daughter inlaw – Susi (James cherian’s wife)who was admitted due to the forthstage of cancer. At her death bed heprayed to God that “God please takemy life and give a life to my daugh-ter.” God healed her and she couldlive for more than 10 years.

Those days whoever met him wouldremark that he was growingyounger. In fact, he was more ener-getic and excited to do the Lord’swork.

At this time he wrote a song saying

Enikkundoru puthan paattu paadaanEnikkundoru mithram koottukoodaanEnikkundoru nalla naadu pokaanEnikkundoru nalla veedupaarkkaan

He was eagerly waiting for his eter-nal home. September 20-26 was oneof the happiest weeks in MEC’s life. The Tamilnadu Gospel workers’conference was going on.
